Mister Baldy’s (We’re not going back!) My wife and I have vacationed on Chincoteague every September for quite a few years, and we have never tried Mister Baldy’s. We decided to give it a try this time and I can say without hesitation that our first time will most definitely be the last time!w The deal breaker for me was the soft shell crab sandwich. Talk about boring and plain… The sandwich was a single, sad looking soft crab sandwiched between two halves of a bun. NO lettuce, onion, tomato, pickle, tarter sauce. NOTHING but one crab between two pieces of bread. I should mention that the cook managed to use a fairly large toothpick to hold the whole thing together, but believe me, no toothpick was required. A three year old’s hands are big enough to hold this piece of work together! The sandwich came with potato chips. NO fries, no hush puppies, just plain chips. The cost for this? $14.00! Do yourself a favor and go someplace else if you want a good soft crab sandwich. There’s another restaurant on the island that offers a much better sandwich at a price that is worth paying for what you get. TWO soft shell crabs, lettuce, tomato, pickle, tarter sauce, Old Bay Chips and Hush Puppies. My wife had a garden salad with her meal. The salad consisted of lettuce, cherry tomatoes and onion slices. No croutons, no cheese, no cucumbers. No imagination or creativity here, unless you consider the inedible piece of lettuce core that was served with the salad. Looks like a lack of quality control in the kitchen or just a lack of concern for what is served to the customer. Mister Baldy’s. For us, it’s one and done!

I came in looking for a quick meal with my kid. I asked to have the kids spaghetti and meatballs ordered while I continued to look through the menu for my dinner. I specifically mentioned how hungry and tired my toddler was. After about 7-8 minutes, I was finally ready to place my order and did. We ran to the car quickly and on our way back inside, the server stopped to ask me which side I wanted for the kids meal (which I had asked to be made almost 10 minutes ago at this point). Both of our meals came out at the same time. My kid ate a little of the spaghetti but was too tired to eat at that point. I ordered the crab cake sandwich, which was mediocre at best. It's literally a bun and the cake. Nothing else. I asked for a piece of lettuce, and they brought it out right away. My biggest gripe is them not putting my kids' food in when I asked. Hungry toddlers are not fun. I would not return for dinner, but I would give breakfast a try. Can't really mess eggs and bacon up.

I loved this place! A go -to joint for inexpensive, tasty food when I'm visiting Chincoteague. Best fried clam strips and French fries. Not chewy or overcooked, they were tender and breading was tasty, fried to perfection. The French fries were surprisingly delicious as well and both notably cooked in very fresh oil. Also loved the breakfast, eggs and french toast, omelet. The hash browns weren't my favorite, get French fries. I ate here several times this trip. The atmosphere was so relaxed and cozy, loved the hand written messages slipped under the table covers and took the time to add some of our own. Our server, Kristy, was absolutely wonderful, so friendly and on point, I hope to see her again on my next trip! Oh! And coffee was good and strong 😊

Pros: Tables are cute (little messages from previous guests), Not busy so you won’t have to wait for seating, Waitress was kind

Cons: Overpriced, Bland food, Small portions

The Review: Our family had a beautiful vacation in Chincoteague Virginia (so much so we plan on moving to Accomack county in a few years).

On our trip, the first night we came, being our first time here..we sorely mistook the need to make reservations at restaurants. Every restaurant we called was booked to the max and we were travel weary and hungry, desperate for some good food to satisfy us.

Unfortunately, we became one of Mr. Baldys many victims…I mean customers.

When you first pull up to Mr. Baldys, you’re met with a quaint, unimpressive establishment, one that much like our many adventures, you would assume would be a nice hometown style eatery.

Well like the old saying goes, when you assume you-make-an-ass-outta-you-n-me.

We were seated fairly quickly because well, there was barely any patrons. Whether they were the waitresses own families or even the owners own family, or maybe trapped tourists like ourselves who had mistakenly stumbled through the doors tired and hungry like ourselves. We were all in the same sinking boat together and it would surely sink our expectations.

The interior is a drab and sad attempt at “millennial grey” but instead of the bright grey that’s usually found in modern homes, it was a soul sucking grey that’s somehow made the room get darker and darker the deeper we entered the building.

Once sat, we were given menus and we were greeted by a wonderful waitress who was prompt, kind and honestly a bright beacon in the sad, grey, depressing atmosphere around us.

Once our food came, my husband and I both watched as decent sized portions were laid in front of our families. The look of shock between my husband and I as our plates were given to us was almost immediate.

You see, we had ordered the soft shell crab, and now anyone who has ever ordered soft shell crab would know that, there’s not much to them. Well here at Mr. Baldys, they make sure to give you the ration era treatment.

I began to knit fingerless gloves for my husband and I, as we sat across from our family, he began to look around for the cardboard box we would call our home, we would have honestly been better going to the local churches for a hot meal than this establishment where we spent our money.

2 soft shell crabs on a bed of wilted and discolored lettuce sat before us. Nearly starving, we had no choice but to consume our rationed amount, instead of the crabs seasoning making up for the fact of the small portions, we were once again dismayed to find that much like the drab interior paint, so too was the crab.

Now we are white…but we aren’t THIS white. No old bay. No pepper. No salt. No lemon pepper. Just…flour n oil.

Flour. You read that right. It was as if me and my husband had tossed flour and oil together and shaped it into the visage of a crab. When one consumes sea life, you expect a hint of salt. I don’t know how Mr. Baldys does it, but they completely erased all traces of seasonings.

At nearly $30 for 2 small soft shell crabs, I expected to be blown away. $200 was our total for the evening and we left with emptier bellies than we began and palettes that were begging for some flavor.

Thankfully a gas station was selling birria tacos and while it wasn’t up to standards that I care for when I order birria, it completely blew the socks off of Mr. Baldys.

Tourists please, make reservations before you arrive otherwise you will end up like this...

We would barely give 1 star. The only positive thing out of our visit was the western omelet. It was very good. Ordered the sausage gravy..... NO SAUSAGE just gravy. Now... We were given a booth right next to all the coffee and drinks and door to kitchen. There were 3 waitresses and 1 waiter. The 3 women were constantly arguing and we could feel the tension in the restaurant. The older lady was clearly having an attitude or bad day... But they should have taken their problems to the back and resolved them... Or she should have been sent home. When rolling silverware , she licked her fingers to seal the paper and continued with the next set. It was an extremely hostile environment and didn't enjoy seeing her stomp around and complaining every step of the way and kicking the kitchen door repeatedly. We couldn't wait to get out of there.... We wanted a nice peaceful morning and a nice breakfast before driving home and picking up our kids. Will definitely be the only time we ever go there. I'm sorry if this was just a bad morning and if it's usually not this way, but it was definitely enough for us not to want to go back. Disappointing to say the least; especially for the...
