Ocean Deli — Restaurant in Chincoteague

No star review.. I’ve ordered from this place soooo many times and for delivery. I usually always tip in cash because I know it gets to the driver doing the delivery. I ordered $40 worth of food for delivery and selected “custom tip” and put “$0” cause I tip in CASH. I got an email stating “sorry, your order has been cancelled “ so I called and was saying I was charged (after, mind you on the sorry your order has been cancelled email I got stated I was not charged) YES I was almost $40. So y’all cancelled my order because I did not tip. Literally what I was told. But y’all were gonna keep my money though huh. I have always loved the food from this place and I worked at the base and ordered from there countless times. Never one bad thing to say… this drives me insane and I’m actually baffled because it’s so disappointing to know that you would have kept my money had I not called to see what the issue was. Knowing it was that, I also want to bring up the controversial topic about tipping… I AM NOT OBLIGATED TO TIP. Idc idc idc… no one is going to force me to tip when I’m giving you...

I get that local folks around the Chincoteague area can be ambivalent about tourists. You want their money, but they screw up traffic and some of them can be jerks. But really, if you expect someone from out of town to patronize your establishment, you need to be civil at least, maybe even welcoming and thankful for the revenue.

I visited Ocean Deli twice during my family's stay in the area, and both times I was met with stares bordering on hostility that pretty clearly said "What do you think YOU'RE doing in here?"

Unless you're local or otherwise known to the people who work here, I can't recommend that you visit Ocean Deli.

UPDATE 8/18/2022: I stand by my comments about Ocean Deli. The unprofessional reply from the owner is unfortunately consistent with my assessment. Management here needs to work on customer service training and employee accountability.

One of the few places that will deliver to Chincoteague island. The menu is huge and I was impressed with the Popeye salad with fresh spinach, walnuts, egg, and shredded carrots. I was also enamored with the Crabby fries which was a huge portion that could be easily shared. Overall the food on the menu has variety and seems fresh or clean-tasting (which is important for me to want to re-order). The food quality is much higher than many of the casual island places. If I had to make a suggestion it would be to add some flavor to the fried shrimp breading but also appreciate it not being salty. Really like the soft cornbread that comes with it. The Italian sub was huge and loaded with meat and veggies. To make it even better I would enhance the bread of the sub. Couldn’t go wrong with the pizza from here and some of the pizza offerings look really good. All of the food I ordered from here was kid approved and so we ordered again and will order again...
