This places punches above. Clean, softly lit, attentive service, some of the best diner coffee I have ever had - I was impressed. But that can't overcome there being almost nothing I could order, which as a vegetarian was almost the case.
On their menu pancakes, french toast, and a veggie omelette are the only items that do not include a choice of sausage, bacon, or steak. That's fine and unsurprising - what took me by surprise were the lengths I had to go to get a substitution. I wanted a dish that came with a selection of items - pancakes, eggs, hash browns - and my choice of two bacon or sausage. My server - in as polite and understanding a way as possible - told me no substitutions are allowed. I asked to speak to a manager and she called on my behalf: no substitutions. She said I could speak with her in the hotel lobby if I liked. I spoke with her and another woman she was with, and they were eventually willing to make an exception, for which I was very grateful.
But there are many who would not go to the lengths that I went, and for that they would be left with very few options outside this restaurant, especially if they want to support a locally owned business. I understand that substitutions for a restaurant can present difficulties, but the solution to that is an 'or' on the menu item for something that isn't meat - I can't imagine the flour and baking soda of a piece of fry bread cost more than two pieces of bacon.
When my food came it was delicious and well served - I was impressed to the end. This could easily be a five star review, as on the merits of the food and service that's what deserved. But for my experience as a vegetarian, and the trouble other vegetarians will have to expect if dining here, it pains me to...
Read moreWe went here for lunch after spending the morning in Canyon de Chelly on a jeep tour. The Junction Restaurant was recommended to us by a couple of locals as the best place for eating out. We arrived at 12:15 and were surprised to see how quickly we could get a seat because the parking lot looked full.
I was trying to decide between a bowl of posole or the green chile cheeseburger. My decision was made easier when the waitress said that the posole is no longer available. The green chile cheeseburger is a 1/3 pound beef patty with cheese and a roasted green chile that has been roasted, split, and cleaned paced on top of the cheese. On the side, they provide lettuce, onion, and tomato for you to add if you like them. I got seasoned fries with my burger, which were ok. They are steak-cut fries, seasoned then deep fried. The flavor was not bad, but they still needed salt and ketchup.
For dessert we got a Navajo Fry Bread to split. This was tasty and was served with a little cup of brown sugar, but they had somehow ran out of honey. That would have been helpful to know when we ordered it. I probably would not have chosen this item if I knew that they were out of honey.
Based on what I have seen in Chinle I think that this is probably the best place to eat. There are lots of other options on the menu and they had plenty of staff, so the service was quick and we got out food in a very reasonable...
Read moreFood: -Better than Denny's, Thunderbird, & Holiday Inn—but, outside the reservation, they wouldn't be able to compete. -In addition you're not ALLOWED to request for add-on's or a side. -Because, as a customer, you don't matter.
Service: -The waiters are snotty, rude, unhelpful, & they will ignore you. -If you ask for anything, they'll role their eyes. I suggest NEVER leaving a tip
Atmosphere: -The head waiter kept yelling at the staff—to the point of thinking we were going to be yelled at next, if we asked for extra napkins (completely unprofessional). -Another waiter was obnoxiously "singing" with the music, making crude jokes, and changed the music from country to rap (a complete 180—from folksy to urban, pick something & stick with it). -Overall, the atmosphere was completely uneasy.
Summary: -I used to like the Junction Resturant, but after Covid, the staff have decided they are more important than the customers. -Customers ignore the atmosphere and tolerate the waitstaff, because we know nothing will be changed. -What do customer complaints matter when they're only four restaurants in Chinle.
-As a long time customer, who saw how the Junction used to be (which was good), I will never...
