I had jerk chicken for the first time last month in N.J. Since, I have been back home in Rochester I have been trying to replicate the experience. I went to People's Choice today. The owner is so sweet and welcoming. That is so lacking in customer service of today. You're usually met with a gnarl and disdain. I'll definitely be back just for the customer service.
I purchased a jerk chicken dinner with 2 sides. Very affordable @ $16. The chicken was delicious and very flavorful. I wish the jerk had more kick, but she said she makes it "little people friendly". Smart business move if you ask me. She offers different levels of sauces to add more heat if you desire. I tried one on the side. Very delicious. She offered brown sauce on my rice. Which people never ask. The rice and peas were meh, but the brown sauce was good. The mac and cheese was tasty. The collard greens are a little on the sweet side for me. However I'm sensitive to sweetness as I favor the savory side of things. I went around lunch time and I don't think I waited more than a 10 minutes, if that and my food was piping hot! It was still warm when I got to work which is 10 minutes away. I was so pleased with my overall experience. I would definitely suggest this restaurant to anyone looking to satisfy their hankering for Caribbean food.
I don't have any pictures because I was too...
Read moreIm sorry but the banana pudding at this place was cream and wafers no banana and no pudding it was dry and just horrible it was enough to choke u. Ive had better oxtail and the rice was horrible also almost tasteless or like that out of a box Dry and stale. Mac nd cheese noodles were over cooked and kinda soggy yams had no brown sugar or cinnamon in them at all tasted like they came out of a can. We also ordered greens and they were a little to sweet. Im pissed because i was really looking forward to that banana pudding and i got a cantainer of buttercream and wafers. This was my first time at this place and it will be my last. First impression is everything and everything about this place as far as food is concerned just didnt impress at all. And judging by her other bad reviews i can see they had a similar situation. I wish i can post photos. My sister paid 55$ for 2 meals worth of food and we got 10 dollar flavor and food quality. I wisb i can post photos this food...

The People’s Kitchen serves up a rare vibe alongside jerk chicken, candied yams, and peach cobbler. The food bangs. The lady running the joint is everyone’s aunty and made me feel like I was coming home for a hot meal after several months at sea.
If that wasn’t enough, they got a key to the CITY hanging right there on the wall—a distinguished honor, one that speaks directly to the quality of this establishment—nay, this must-visit INSTITUTION of Rochester.
Many of the lifetime townies I encountered during my short Roc tenure hadn’t even heard of this gem. A crying shame. But they know now, I made sure to let everyone I encountered in on this well-kept secret.
Let it be secret no more! May The People’s Kitchen bask in the sunshine of recognition, climbing in the collective unconscious until it is the knee-jerk dining spot of choice for any respectable Rochester gourmand, aspiring or otherwise.
Long Live The People’s Kitchen.
Yummy...
