I've dined here several times, but it's been a bit of a disappointment each time. The food selection is excellent. There are many different items to please a variety of preferences. I have had sushi every time I've been there, but those I've dined with have enjoyed other items as well and it was always good. The sushi is good, a little bland, and not as flavorful and fresh as Syringa, but better than some places I've visited. I do feel it's overpriced for what it is. Also, there is a line to place your order, you pick up your order at the counter, and then you bus your own table....yet there is still a spot on the receipt for a tip and I believe there were tip jars out as well. At first I tipped the usual 20%, but I quit because I feel if I have to do everything but prepare my meal, a gratuity should really not be expected. The dining area is often not very clean when I have been in there. The customer service is my biggest complaint with this place, though. The counter people have always been very friendly, but the sushi bar I have had issues with every time. Of the several times, I've been here, I believe there was only once that my order was correct. Other times, it was not what I'd ordered, or items were forgotten in my order. Once, they simply forgot to make my order, so I spent a needless extra half hour or more waiting. When I've approached the sushi counter, I was given the impression I was inconveniencing the sushi staff. After my experience today, I will not be back with my baby, as it is just not a baby friendly place to eat. The high chairs were very dirty, disgusting, in fact. It does not look as though they clean them. I couldn't find a table that was actually clean, and I had to pull my baby out of his high chair twice to go up to the counter and pick up my food. I ended up making a total of 3 trips up to the counter and the last one was because they had split the order up between two plates. I know that this is often the way sushi is presented, but not always. Also, when I went up to the counter, baby in tow and mentioned it looks like I'd need to make two trips, the guy just assured me that was ok and went back to visiting with his co-workers. It was pretty dead in there and in other places I've had servers offer to assist in much less challenging situations. I realize that's the style of their business, but it doesn't fit my style now that I'm dining with a child. Also, yet AGAIN my order was incorrect and it was very difficult to get anyone's attention, as the sushi folks were busying themselves visiting amongst each other just out of earshot in the kitchen area. I'll say it again, the food is tasty and there's a great variety, but too many cons for me to go back again, as I always leave slightly more irritated than...
Read moreMy wife and I were craving some takeaway fish and chips, so we decided to try Fisherman's Market and Grill--and it didn't disappoint.
The fish was fresh and cooked to order, and the fries were hot, with a lightly crisp exterior and warm, fluffy center. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her halibut, while I opted for the cod, which was equally fresh. The meal was satisfying, though not flawless--more on that shortly.
Judging by the long queue and extended wait time, the place is clearly popular. When I arrived, three customers were ahead of me at the counter. Altogether, I spent about 50 minutes from entry to exit. By the time I left, the line had tripled, and I'd guess those at the back would be waiting close to 90 minutes. Fair warning: if you want freshly prepared food, you'll need to be patient.
The space is half fish market--offering fresh seafood to take home--and half casual eatery, with plenty of self-serve seating. The decor is no-frills but clean and functional.
There are two ordering stations. The main counter focuses on fish and chips, with halibut, cod, salmon, and catfish available baked or fried. Sides include calamari, shrimp, clams, chowder, and salads.
The second station serves poke--something I enjoy and plan to try next time.
My wife gave her meal a solid 4 out of 5. I leaned more toward 3 1/2, largely because of my British upbringing. We both felt the fries could have used more crispness; I'll probably request that adjustment on my next visit.
My main critique was with the batter and fish presentation. In a proper British chippy, you get a whole fillet encased in a light, crisp, airy batter--delicately crunchy outside, tender within. Here, the coating was much more in line with American styles: coarse, dry, crunchy, and breadcrumb-heavy. It was well executed and flavorful, but didn't quite scratch that nostalgic itch for traditional British fried fish--much like our ongoing quest for a decent breakfast sausage.
Also, the fish was served not as a full fillet, but more like an oversized fish stick. It was definitely fresh, not processed, but lacked the texture and mouthfeel of a classic cut.
Bottom line: tasty, fresh food that's worth the wait. Will I go back? Absolutely--for the poke, and for fresh fish to cook at home. And with so few quality fish-and-chip options in Coeur d'Alene--and this one just around the corner--I'll likely order it again, though probably not on a...
Read moreWe came for the fish and chips, but stayed for all of it!
When we moved here, three years ago, from California SF-Bay Area to get away from the crazies. We knew that restaurant quality might be a problem. However, Fisherman’s Market & Grill has turned out to be amazing! We have been eating here since we moved probably one to two times a week.
I’m here right now. The place has a market vibe and is very very casual, but the food blows the other supposedly fancy sea food restaurants in the area away. Better fish, better quality, more variety, and decent prices.
We would miss the Fish Market terribly, if we ever had to move.
Try these dishes if you really like seafood:
Fish and chips; the the fresh ling cod, (on the white board specials most of the time) is outstanding if you love really good fish & chips. They also offer other fishes as well.
The poke bar is terrific, I order ahi and white fish on greens, with tempura carrots, cucumbers, sea weed salad, and sesame crisps. Ginger Citus sauce, and some sweet chili sauce on the side. Sometimes I put peas or avocado on top. Don’t forget the tempura carrots, really.
The Fishwich sandwiches are very good, fish tacos mmmm. I had a crab cake burger that came with chowder or soup. Yum
They have a very extensive menu, and you can buy fish from their market section if you want, including oysters, various fishes, sushi fishes, clams, scallops, crab, etc. Smoked fish too.
Crab Cakes! They are very good and I usually get a cup of soup with them.
Crab Louis salad: This is a dish that is seldom served at most restaurants, it is a classic and they do it well here.
Maine Lobster Roll; Ok you gotta try this at least once, 5 oz. Of lobster with a fairly light chive mayo and celery sauce on super soft fresh roll. A little pricey but you gotta try it at least once. Makes my mouth water...
