A hearty shout-out to the Crown and Thistle, a delightful British pub nestled in the heart of Couer d'Alene! My recent visit to this charming establishment left me with an unforgettable experience that I simply must share.
First and foremost, let's talk about the food – oh my, the food! If you're a fan of delectable British fare, you're in for a treat. Their chips, the epitome of crispiness, had me longing for more with each savory bite. And let's not forget the Welsh rarebit – a scrumptious delight that left my taste buds dancing with joy. The blend of melted cheese, ale, and spices atop toasted bread was nothing short of perfection.
And what goes better with British delicacies than a fine selection of beers? The Crown and Thistle boasts an impressive array of local brews and classic British ales, making it a beer enthusiast's dream come true. I found myself happily sipping away, immersing myself in the pub's convivial atmosphere, surrounded by friendly locals and fellow patrons.
Now, while my experience at the Crown and Thistle was nothing short of delightful, I can't help but recall a less than stellar encounter at another place. Enter Pete from the Boardwalk Bar, whose lackluster drinks and stale jokes were the antithesis of what I experienced at the Crown and Thistle. It's a world of difference between skilled bartenders who take pride in their craft and those who seem to be just going through the motions.
In conclusion, if you're looking for an authentic British pub experience in Couer d'Alene, the Crown and Thistle is your go-to spot. From the scrumptious chips and Welsh rarebit to the top-notch selection of beers, this place has it all. So, raise your glasses and head on over to the Crown and Thistle for a jolly good time. And as for you, Pete – perhaps a visit to this fine establishment could inspire a transformation in your bartending skills. Cheers!

Read moreThe prices were outrageous. The atmosphere was decent, but the guy working at the bar was a proper moody old git - I reckon he's the owner. We've been here twice and both times we've had the displeasure of dealing with the dude, and he's had a stick up his backside both times. The first time we went (2022) we got Brats, which were decent, and good portions. My mates complained it didn't taste great, but we got on with it anyway. It's a holiday, you know? You just get on with your meal and then go to the pub.
We gave them a second try a year later (2023), this time I got the chips and curry sauce, and my pals tried the brats again. Slightly better this time on the brats, but do not get the chips and curry sauce - it will not at all live up to your expectations! I moved here from the UK, and I'd consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to the way we do chips and curry sauce. It's very simple; It's chips (like steak fries), with a soup-like curry to go with it. Usually the sauce comes on the side, but in rare cases I have seen it come on top. That's how it is everywhere you'd order it in the UK, or anywhere in Europe (google "chips and curry sauce" and you'll see what I mean). What we got here was not even close. It was french fries (which I'd let slide if they actually tasted good, but they were basicially oven-fries microwaved), covered in a mayo-curry mix - essentially just mayo mixed with curry powder, and it barely covered the fries.
I would honestly rather eat some dirty sandals than eat there again.
Edit: Owner's response says it all lol. Gave me a chuckle. Clearly got under her skin, because the truth hurts. "I'm not sure what to say." was probably the most honest thing you said in that whole rant of waffle. 3/5 for effort. Thanks for...
Read moreI had a wonderful lunch. On my Monday, I try to go to a new place each time. I've been wanting to try this space for a very long time, especially considering we are neighbors.
When I saw their scotch egg listed as #glutenfree .... I may have texted my partner and said now.... right now...
When you have the needs I do in the culinary space, you will travel far and wide to experience the texture, flavor and experience that anyone else can have easily.
You see, providing that with alteration to the norm takes desire, skill and eventual mastery as to what works and what doesn't.
I'm no master at my craft, but I understand the destination. I'll get there... hopefully as an Oogway in his infinite Kung Fu Panda Wisdom.
Personally, the vibe upon entering was aligned. You feel a sense of peace.
The private booths?! Ummm yes please, date night here I come!
Also a place I could bring my kids and they would enjoy and I would feel relaxed.
Not an easy combo.
Ok. Food.
I ordered BOTH scotch eggs. Both were great, however, the vegetarian one was packed with herbaceous flavor from their chimichurri. Truly, get it.
Bangers and Mash.... that gravy?! Hell yes. So rich and light at the same time. I had a different expectation for the potatoes, but these countered and won. Check Mate my friend.
I could not try the fish and chips, j was offered cod or haddock, he chose cod (I am one to choose haddock) but he said was some of the best since he's been across the pond. Also, just visually it was beautiful. I tried the tartar, so good.
Here's the deal. Go, try, feel. It's a special place. Our bartender was great, I had a pinot that was wonderful, I prefer I lighter red with lunch.
I. Will. Be. Back.
Thank you,...
