Two weeks on the road from Houston to Couer d'Alene, two restaurants a day, and this little place gives us one of the greatest meals of the whole trip? Yes. Every dish, every bite, the service, the vibe, the menu - just a great, great meal in a fantastic restaurant. A good foodie knows that sometimes the best places are found in the most unlikely locations. So, no surprise that this amazing little lunch/brunch place is on a side street in a little old building. To wit: the best corned beef hash we've ever had - as if it was produced in a fine barbecue joint. An impossibly perfect curry shrimp soup. The best pancake we've ever eaten. Lemon curd served with a berry jam that turned the just made fresh bread into something worth writing about. And on and on. We'd been in CDA for three days and had almost given up on finding anything great to eat - we were starting to think that this just isn't a food town. Now we know better - you just have to dig a little deeper, past the tourist spots on Sherman Avenue, past the heavily advertised corporate spots like Anthony's or those in the CDA Resort. Take a side street, take a chance - it might be the best meal you've ever had around here.

Just 3 stars? Let me explain. First, the coffee is $3.50. For ok drip coffee. Not really good stuff, but ok. Which was lukewarm, not hot. Had to wait about 5 minutes until our server came back to get some hot coffee. Ok, stuff happens. But they use of those little creamer pods. I want real creamer. That brings me to the butter. The French toast was great but they use those cheap packets. I want whipped butter, not margarine packets. For those things alone it's one demerit. And then my food wasn't hot. And the breakfast potatoes are ok. Again not great, but ok. Am I being nitpicky? Probably. My wife just didn't care for her country Benedict. I get it, sometimes you just don't get the right thing. But add it all up & our experience was less than ok. Was it just a freak experience? Maybe. But next time we go for breakfast it won't be here. I really like the duck confit, though. Not many CDA restaurants serve duck confit. I've had it before & enjoyed it. For that reason alone I bumped it up to 3 stars from the 2 I was going to leave

The lemon curd was the best part of our meal - devine with our toasts. The staff was the best part of the restaurant overall - attentive, gave great recommendations. The food however, we were a bit disappointed in. We had the steak and eggs and the corn beef hash. The steak and eggs was ok; we thought the potatoes would be like crispy fried country potatoes, but they came out more like roasted potatoes, and the steak was on the thinner side and cooked more than we requested. The corn beef hash was too salty for me; the waitress' recommendation to eat it with vinegar was what helped me eat some of it as it lessen the saltiness of it. As with anything, it could be our personal preferences. I would go back to try their sweeter breakfast items, or even just for the lemon curd itself and staff.

My wife and I have been to the garnet cafe loved it the coffee was amazing the food was amazing and the service was amazing, however this time I was so embarrassed I literally wanted to cry, i was working in the area and was getting ready to go to the next job but I was waiting for a phone call from my boss, who was supposed to call me and let me know where the next job was. My wife and I wanted a good meal we hadn't had anything but sandwiches working long hours and trying to get the last job done, we got done with the job early in the morning and decided to go to the garnet but they didn't open for another hour so we sat in the pickup waiting for it to open ended up falling asleep we were exhausted and starving but we knew any second we were expecting a call but since we fell asleep we were pushing it timewise so we sat down at a table and got some coffee, if you've never had the coffee at the garnet you havent had coffee, we wanted to order so badly but sleeping in a little worried us because we didn't want to order then have to leave and he should be calling any second , so we waited to see if we could make it happen after talking to the boss , the waitress would come over and ask us and we tried to explain that we were waiting on a phone call she seemed to be irritated I was paying attention to the other tables I would never hold up a table if someone wanted to eat so after a few I asked if we could drink our coffee at one of the tables out front of the restaurant and I got a rude ill get you a to go cup and I said ok I said we are going to order some food were just ......and then she snarled and said you can't eat outside I said why not and she embarrassed me in front of a whole bunch of people I was embarrassed bad I didn't understand why I was being treated like that she had said earlier that she was paying for our coffee and that if we needed to go we could I thought that was a sweet gesture and I said oh well thank you but now I knew exactly what was going on she didn't think we had any money so I handed my debit card to her and said I just need to pay for the coffee she said nope you can leave it's already been paid for and that's when I found out it doesn't matter how hard you work or how nice you are to people once they decide what you are there is no changing there mind , I will never go back to the garnet I can't believe she treated me like that it hurt my feelings it embarrassed me and I didn't deserve not a single bit of what she did I'm just so shocked as to how she treated me I've been there a few times while I. The area I just can fathom ever stepping into that again I don't treat people like that and I certainly can't except being treated like that it was horrible to say the least Dennis and...

If I was only rating the food, I’d give this place the highest rating. The food is amazing. BUT, the wait is very, very long and for us was made worse because the person doing the seating kept taking regulars in front of everyone. It happened three times that I know positively, before another lady and I said something. We were both groups of four, so when they took two different groups of three in front of us, I thought maybe the tables for four were bigger. Nope. They were the exact same size. I even watched her mark one of the groups off the page we were on and move them to the prior page and then mark them off when she called their name. I had just checked the list and knew we were the next group of four, when she called a group of four who had just walked in. The other lady who was the group of four just after us and I both jumped up and said, ā€œWait a minute, we were next!ā€ By this time, we had been waiting over 45 minutes (they had told us 30) and we had a two year old in our group and it was getting very close to nap time. It was also my birthday brunch, so I was really hoping for a nice, relaxing brunch but by this time we were all past that. After we talked to the owner (who seemed genuinely shocked that this was happening), both groups were seated almost immediately. The owner apologized profusely, promised me they would have a meeting about this issue, assured me this was NOT how they operated, comp’d our drinks, the service we had was amazing (we tipped accordingly) and the food was amazing. So the moral of this story is - when you eat here (and you’re missing out if you don’t), keep a close check on who’s being seated, unless you enjoy sitting around in restaurants while others are seated in front of you. Hopefully, the owner did take care of this and it will never be an...

After reading the reviews I went into this eatery really wanting to like it. So once inside I noticed it looks like a small house converted to a cafe. The cafe is small and expect to be sitting really close to other customers. We sat in the far corner and had to move the table just to get into our chairs. Once we did that the table was not the same and was very wobbly. I looked under and saw that someone had propped a napkin under one of the legs and that the table base had loose screws under it. With that every move we made with our hands or arms moved the table around like we were floating on water. So onto the food, I ordered a burrito and when it finally came it was cold. Ok no problem I decided to continue and give it a go. I cut it in half and noticed that 80% of the burrito was potato. The burrito was un seasoned and totally bland. Well we Decided to order the rosemary sourdough as a side. Just so you know it is only one slice of bread and costs 2$. The coffee was about 3$ just by itself. So after spending 40 dollars for a breakfast for two we left. About the only worthwhile part was the server who was very nice and accommodating. Sorry guys your first impression was a fail. We will...
