The Burger Bar is a rare discovery on the outskirts of Burlington. Some might say it's a dive, but I'm inclined to say it's a local treasure serving up a decent burger and fries where you can't find much else. It was a quiet weekday visit that prompted me bellying up to the Bar for a sampling of what a nearby resident described as the best burgers in Chittenden County. (Claims like that are often disappointing, but this one was not.) I gave the Kahuna Burger a try -- curious about a slab of pineapple on a slab of meat. At $12.99, the Kahuna is one of the priciest single burgers, but a bargain by any measure. It was juicy, messy, savory, and satisfying. The garlic-parm fries on the side were a nice complement of crispy and zesty. I truly enjoyed the entire plate and washed it down with a Mason jar Arnold Palmer. On the other side of the table, a perfectly prepared cheeseburger with a side of jalapenos and pickles was equally delish, and just as well cooked -- with a hint of pink and hot juicy goodness. With a decent bar, house-made shakes, and a shallow dive feel (maybe it gets deeper after dark), the Burger Bar is a solid reason to get out of Burlington proper and indulge.

I ate at Burger Bar way back when it opened. I was in college not too far from the restaurant, and the food was always incredible. Definitely one of the best burgers I’ve had in Vermont, and it always kept me coming back for more. I just went into Burger Bar tonight after moving back to the area to have it again after 3 years, and I’m pretty disappointed. We ordered the special, barbecue ranch tater tots, and the cheese wasn’t even melted. Our server brought out our appetizers WITH our dinner so we didn’t even have time in between. I got the bacon cheddar burger, and it wasn’t very remarkable. It was an average burger, and not as juicy and flavorful as it once was. The garlic parm fries I ordered were unexpected as they weren’t seasoned, it was just fries with a slight drizzle of garlic butter and some shredded parm cheese. Overall none of the food was BAD, per se, but it did disappoint. It seems as a lot has changed after 2 or 3 years and it hasn’t changed for the positive. If I ever need a decent burger and I’m in the area I might come back, but I no longer consider this one of the best places for a burger in Vermont.

I’ve been to the Burger Bar a few times and have always been impressed. This was my first time ordering the Mc’B burger. I should have gotten the double. The single doesn’t fill the bun enough and while the pickles and sauce were well seasoned, this burger was missing the salty and umami flavor that is distinct at Mc’ D’s. The bun was well toasted and buttery while the cheese melted to a classic American nuclear yellow glue that binded the burger. The burger was a great temp, pickle was well salted and briney, not to mention the shredded lettuce softened the texture of the bite while also adding crispness. The fries reminded me of the fries from Al’s French Fries or Beansie’s. I sprayed vinegar on them with a dash of salt to recreate my childhood. I also ordered jalapeño poppers. The jalapeño and cream cheese bit through easily and while I don’t usually like ranch, it helped mitigate the spice of the jalapeño. I’m excited to come here again and see how the double compares but for now I rate the burger: 8.2/10

Do not go here — Tonight we ordered $124 worth of burgers and alcohol from Burger Bar. We ordered 2 Margarita’sand 1 Moscow Mule. Our pick up time was 6:30, we pulled in and waited in line for a staff member to bring it out to us. We received our order at 6:50, and we’re home by 7. On arriving home all of our food was cold, and the burgers not cooked correctly. My Moscow Mule was pink, almost like a Cosmo, and on our order slip it was labeled “Cosmo - Not Cosmo - Moscow Mule”. I opened the jar to taste it because all other Moscow Mules I’ve had before have been a cloudy white/clear liquid. I tasted this Moscow Mule just to find it wasn’t a Moscow Mule at all, it was sour mix so strong it burned going down. I was pretty upset because I had paid $20 just for my drink that I wasn’t able to consume. I called 25 times before I was able to get through to a manager, the time was now 7:30. I had not touched my food because it was cold and undercooked, and my drink wasn’t drinkable. I finally am able to speak with a manager and I calmly explain to him my situation just to be rudely cut off and talked down to. He insisted he made my drink 20 minutes ago, told me exactly how he made it, and that he makes Moscow Mules daily. I then explained to him we’ve been home for 30+ minutes and that we picked up our food over an hour ago so it would’ve been impossible that he made my drink just 20 minutes ago. He then asked me what I would like him to do after arguing with me that I was wrong and he knew he made it correctly and it was what I asked for. I asked him for my $20 back and he said no, he said he would make me a new drink, but at this point I’m completely disappointed in the customer service and food/drink service. I then ask him why I can’t be reimbursed when they’ve been so busy throughout this time and he gave me no reason, and just continued to say he couldn’t do it. This “manager” treated me disrespectfully, was extremely rude, and crass. I then decided to drive back to the restaurant to return the full 32oz drink to be greeted at the door by the same gentleman who continued to argue with me, I calmly told him I wasn’t there to argue, I wanted him to just take the drink back and know how disappointed I was in the experience. I have been here one other time for dinner in December 2019, and had a great experience and a great Moscow Mule, but this take out experience has ruined this greatly for me. I will not be returning, I have no desire to suggest it to people, and will actually be encouraging people to shy away from this business. It’s sad that “the customer is always right” doesn’t apply at some places, and the people working there don’t respect others. We are all human, it was a mistake that could’ve been easily fixed and not dragged out, unfortunate business move for...

We called on New Years Eve at 6:30 to place a to-go order and were told to do it online. No problem! However I asked if they had the pretzel 🥨 and beer cheese sauce, I wanted to make sure they had that cheese because that’s why we were ordering from there. She assured me that they did. So we placed the order online for the pretzel and extra beer cheese sauce and a pound of garlic Parmesan boneless wings. We drove there, arriving at 7:15 (the time they said it would be ready). When we got out of the car a kitchen staff person told us that they were closed, had run out of beef. We said we had already placed and paid for an order online and he said “yeah sorry your card will be reimbursed but we are closed”. We looked confused and he said “you can go ask inside but they’ll tell you the same thing” so we did just that. We were met just as we walked in saying they were closing. We again explained we had already placed an order and she said they were out of meat. I replied “the order was just boneless wings and a pretzel with beer cheese sauce” and she said “oh ok we have that right here”. Phew! 😅 I was ecstatic that we didn’t leave the house for nothing. But seriously, you ran out of meat on New Years Eve at 7pm? Once we got home I was salivating from the smell and the promise of beer cheese and pretzel heaven! I took my first bite and thought “Hmmm, this isn’t the same as what I’ve had before...” so I cleansed my pallet and tried another bite of just the beer cheese sauce. How disappointing to find it was just a plain cheese sauce (the kind you get at the movies for nachos) with absolutely no beer flavor, and the crusty top from sitting there getting thick on the edges all mixed into the cups of plain cheese. The pretzel was OK, but dried and overcooked, with hardly any salt. I wasn’t expecting much from the boneless wings after the pretzel/cheese disappointment, however they were in my top 5 of boneless wings ever! They were exactly how I would have made them, no gross fat or tendon/cartilage pieces and breaded and fried to perfection!

The chicken saved the meal (mostly) and because of that I gave 3 stars...

Food was underwhelming at best. They sell orders of 6 wings, but you can't get two sauce flavors on less than a dozen wings, so we ordered two dozen with two different sauces. All two dozen came out on one plate with one tiny container of dressing, and were presented as a mix of the two flavors, but were actually only one sauce. We pointed this out to the waitress - she brought them back to the kitchen, then brought them back out on two plates and they were ridiculously oversauced, so obviously the same wings were just tossed in different sauces once brought back to the kitchen. The waitress asked if we needed more dressing when dropping off the original order, we said yes - she brought us two small containers, one of which was taken away when she took the wings back, but we were charged a dollar for both containers of extra dressing when the bill came. We ordered the pretzels which appeared to have come frozen and reheated from a box and were served with standard nacho cheese sauce, not the beer cheese sauce described on the menu. The staff was attentive but physically shaky in a manner that was off-putting. The music and general ambiance were both terrible and all in all it was an awful experience and we won't be back. They could improve in a number of ways, but dropping the obviously frozen appetizers and providing enough sauce and dressing for the dishes served (and not charging for extra - no sit down restaurant does that) would be a great...
