I don't know how it could have possibly gotten any worse, but it has. I'm so bummed on the new menu and changes, yet again. Sorry for the bad review but I'm really upset about what is going on here.
The service was good, the waiter was great. That's where it ends.
The food is a joke. Had to ask for a side plate for the ridiculous chips so that I could even get to the salsa. Same with the guac.
WTF is with that rice? It's horrible, unseasoned garbage. Literally the worst rice I've ever had.
The beans are okay, at least seasoned, but hardly what I want from Mexican food. Maybe Central or South American inspiration?
The rellenos were okay, but small portion, just cheese egg rolls with green Chile, no lettuce or tomato. The green Chile tastes like jarred 505 or something. The rellenos came in a giant bowl for "presentation", but makes it difficult to eat the food. Just put it all on a freaking plate. Rice, beans, main, and some lettuce and tomato ffs. No need for separate bowls for the sides. Do you hate your dishwasher, or what? What is the point?
Overall, the menu is super lacking. Most of the good staples are missing, to be replaced by...nothing. The last owners cut the menu in half, now it's cut down even further?. Where is the rest of the menu? It's hard to be a repeat customer when you have no variety. Why have a whole restaurant to be a food truck? How many people look at the menu and just walk out?
I don't know who needs to hear this, but we don't need some BS pretentious hipster food here. Maybe your Candelas crowd wants that (read my freedom street social review. Lol!), but I just want food that doesn't have to try so hard. Guac is good because it's fresh and simple.
It would be one thing if the food was dressed up AND good, but...
So disappointing. We need GOOD food options up here so bad, this is just not it. That's why you're dead on a Saturday night. Figure it out.
Again, sorry for this review. It's just insanely frustrating.
Previous review: Extremely expensive for what it is. The portions are mostly large, but the food is mediocre at best. I don't mind paying good money for good food and service, but this is not it. It's gotten progressively worse over the years. There is plenty of good Mexican food in Colorado at a fraction of the cost. I understand mountain tax, but dang this is just beyond price gouging. Chips and guac was like $13 or something. That's just crazy, mountains or not.
The green chile was decent. For the love of God don't order the steak.
I would advise you to just avoid all of the food in Coal creek canyon. All two restaurants.
This place needs a...
Read moreThis review saddens me to write since I have been a local in the canyon for more than 7 years. The Wondervu Cafe has hosted some wonderful memories for me over the years and used to be my bus stop. Though today, my best friend (who also used to be a local in the canyon community) and I sat at the table... Absolutely. Speechless. The service was very poor and slow. The menus that were handed to us were opened and we were shocked that some of our favorite entrees- the price was skyrocketing. The price had gone up about $2-$3.50 on everything. We also didnât know which lady our waitress was. We had a different one coming to us every 20 minutes. The staff is very short. We were told that the Chef was out today and that the Owner of the place was cooking everything herself. How on Godâs Divine Earth is this place still open? I lived for the House Margarita, $10.75- by the way (which youâll need with how much your about to spend) on the food you ordered 45 minutes ago. Then of course, the hefty check youâre gonna be getting at the end. My friend wanted extra cheese on her green chili bowl and they legit charged her $3.00 more!!! JUST FOR THE SHREDDED CHEESE! If that doesnât scream that this place is probably drowning in debt somewhere, then I donât know what does! At this point, we just want to leave because we were already stressing out how much we werenât planning on spending here. The worst thing about trying to leave the place quick enough was that the waitress to took one checkbook at a time and took her literally 20 minutes just to check my friend out. She legit left my checkbook on the table and then came back to get it after returning the other one. Then, my friend and I knew it was going to be another long time. So we made our way inside and had to go look for my card so we could leave. What a real Kitchen Nightmare. If the canyon has any hope left to save what used to be a gem- petition the Food Network to get Gordon Ramsey to come check...
Read moreWondervu Cafe isnât just a destination. Itâs a dining experience. This rustic mountain Mexican restaurant has been serving locals and visitors alike for decades. For visitors, the drive to Wondervu Cafe is worth the trip alone. Itâs location in the foothills above Golden provides patrons with a spectacular view of the continental divide and there is patio seating available (weather permitting) that offers those lucky enough to find themselves dining outside a front row seat to the amazing vistas. Locals know the cafe as a place to meet with friends and neighbors to catch up on the local goings-on and while enjoying their personal favorites off of the menu. The food is always delicious. The traditional choices of burritos, enchiladas and tacos can all be had as well as a few original items such as the Tijuana Tostada and the Pablitos. Other offerings such as the lobster fajitas and the camarones indulge the seafood lovers palate. There are several American options available such as cheeseburgers and grilled steak with baked potato and veggies. A fun menu exists for the kids and vegetarians will find many tasteful options as well. They offer full bar service which includes many great tequilas and the House Margarita with rocks and salt is among one of the better house margs I have had the pleasure of trying. Desserts are great if you still have the room. Try the homemade cream puff or flan. The restaurant can get busy on the weekends but if there is a slight wait it is worth it. Youâll never wait long and a drink from the bar helps pass the time. The restaurant is always clean, the staff is always friendly and the food is consistently great. This place ranks high on my list...
