If I could give 0 stars, I would. 83 Diner is the definition of a toxic, poorly run, and unsafe workplace.
My mother was wrongfully and disrespectfully fired after consistently showing up, working hard, and maintaining integrity. There was no valid explanation—just a cold, abrupt termination. Meanwhile, the floor manager fosters a hostile environment, openly saying she “won’t hire anyone prettier than her.” That’s the level of professionalism at this place. She talks down to staff and makes the work environment miserable.
The diner itself is disgusting. Flies are everywhere—around tables, drinks, and even in food prep areas. It’s completely unsanitary and honestly stomach-turning.
To make matters worse, the head manager caused an electrical fire by carelessly leaving the electrical box open. This led to serious damage and forced the diner to close for two days. That kind of negligence is dangerous and unacceptable.
Even more disturbing: the building manager is known to drink alcohol with employees during or around work hours. This crosses serious boundaries, promotes unprofessional behavior, and raises questions about how this place is being run behind closed doors.
The only redeeming part of 83 Diner is a handful of decent employees who genuinely try their best—but even they are treated poorly by management.
If you care about cleanliness, safety, and basic human decency, avoid this place at all costs.
While I appreciate the effort to respond, your statement doesn’t reflect the full truth—it reads more like damage control than real accountability.
You claim that employment decisions are made carefully, yet my mother was fired without warning, explanation, or even a conversation. After showing up every day and doing her job with integrity, she deserved better than being dismissed so coldly and without cause.
You also talk about maintaining a “respectful, positive workplace,” but the reality couldn’t be further from that. One of your current employees threatens to quit nearly every other day when things don’t go her way. She’s known for stirring up drama and constantly badmouthing coworkers and even customers. That kind of behavior creates a toxic environment, and management does nothing to stop it.
On top of that, your floor manager—who has openly said she won’t hire anyone “prettier than her”—was previously fired from another management position for overstepping boundaries and treating her staff terribly. Multiple sources within and outside of the diner have confirmed this. Yet she’s still allowed to manage and contribute to the ongoing dysfunction.
As for cleanliness, claiming you follow “strict standards” doesn’t erase the reality: there are flies all over the diner, and it’s a constant issue—not a random seasonal one. If things were truly clean, customers and staff alike wouldn’t be complaining or noticing it in the first place.
Regarding the electrical fire, brushing it off as an “unforeseen wiring issue” ignores the fact that employees had voiced concerns about that box well before the incident. It wasn’t a random mishap—it was negligence that could have endangered lives.
Lastly, pointing out that some family members still dine or work there doesn’t prove satisfaction—it proves necessity. Not everyone has the privilege to walk away from a job, even if the conditions are unfair or toxic.
If 83 Diner truly values trust, respect, and professionalism, then it should start by listening to the people who’ve been mistreated—not by writing polished statements to try and save face. The truth doesn’t get erased just because...
Read more83 Diner is in my rotation of regularly visited reliable local restaurants. I take friends and family there for lunch or supper, but never had breakfast there unless it was early some morning while I wasn't altogether alert yet, but I doubt it. Once in a while, I've received an order there that I would have tried to prepare differently for myself at home, but with a few exceptions, in restaurants I tend to order things that aren't in my own cooking repertoire. Example: tonight, my side salad wasn't drained as much as I would at home, but my orders of country fried steak and corn pudding were both tasty and piping hot, not even dishes I've attempted myself. 83 Diner isn't a white tablecloth, jacket-and-tie place, Don't go there looking for highbrow foufou grub. Nonetheless, they have a multi page menu (pictures in other reviews show the same menu we saw this evening) offering enough choices to please just about any ordinary human plus a lot of extraordinary humans. Interestingly, pork dishes are marked in Arabic for Muslim customers who don't eat pork. I recently asked the server what those markings meant, and that was the explanation. I don't recall whether the menu has a lot of selections for customers with glutenphobia, carniphobia, or other dietary restrictions. Thankfully, I don't have them. Upon entering 83 Diner, everyone's name changes to Honey or Hon. The place draws a lot of truckers, who seem to appreciate both the food and the parking arrangements (see photo and other reviews). Retired people go there. Working parents go there with their kids. Potty mouth is spoken little, if any. Areas open to the public are clean. The location is readily accessible from I-83 and directly across from two big convenience stores. The place has a lot...
Read moreI have always heard people talking about this diner. I asked at the job at one time if we could go for our business meeting for lunch but other places were chosen. One of my co-workers celebrated her birthday lunch with orders to go. I had gotten a half rack of ribs which was okay but the corn pudding was a little dry and stiff along with the fries. It was kind of hard for me to choose something off the menu from the start. I wanted to see what the diner atmosphere was like on the inside so I went to pay a visit on 4/14/25. This was my first time visiting and I was ordering takeout. I sat down on the bench to look over the menu to see if anything would catch my attention. A free cup of coffee comes with breakfast before 11:00am. According to the big round clock on the wall I would be placing my order ahead of time. So I ordered this for breakfast which comes with a cup of coffee. Lily was taking my order and I asked her if cream and sugar came with the coffee. She was like you would have to pay for your coffee. I was like why? She stated it was 11:01am. I looked at the clock which showed 10:55am behind her. I was like you can't give me a complimentary cup of coffee when your clock is wrong and that is what I'm going by? She wouldn't budge and stated that no one would allow her to give it to me without paying for a cup. She also didn't receive a tip. The point of the matter is that was a cup of coffee going to help with their budget due to a sheriff officer arriving serving papers at their counter? I won't be returning...
