I stopped by for lunch as I was traveling for work after seeing a sign for the place on a previous work trip. Open since 1952, I figured they've been doing something right. I sat at the indoor/outdoor counter ( a huge part of the charm here, in my opinion). I was greeted immediately and ordered their classic Turkey sandwich, a "large marge" (turkey sandwich with bacon and cheese), a small bowl of chili, and a frosted mug of Richardson Root Beer. My chili came out first along with the Root beer, the sandwiches came out very shortly afterwards. The chili hit the spot, as its Fall and growing cold in the North East. I think it couldve had a slighly better balance with more beef in it, but it was still plenty tasty. The root beer smacks of homemade...sweet and flavorful. I had to fight off several late-season yellowjackets that wanted to share. The Turkey sandwiches were next. I loved the rolls they used...soft with a little dap of course salt on the top. The shredded turkey was very moist.....with a turkey broth flavor throughout. The large marge with the bacon and cheese was tastier than the original, with the contrast between the turkey and bacon/cheese being notable. Something about the flavor of whatever broth its cooked in...I wasnt a huge fan of. But the sandwiches were still delicious. I loved the offering of condiments they sit in front of you once served...diced onions, pickle slices, and banana peppers. I used all generously, and they were welcome additions. It seemed very local when I visited...I LOVED the atmosphere and outdoor counter seating. By the look of it, I would guess that their ice cream/dessert offerings are delicious. I would also love to see how their burgers are (next time?). Servers were very attentive and friendly. Ambiance 10 out of 10. Food was a 7 out of 10. Cash only here....will be back to try a burger...
Read moreI wanted this to be the ultimate drive-in experience as this is an older place that's obviously served many but found myself disappointed. We ordered a Large Marge (which I was crazy excited about for the name), a Chubby Checker a kids chili dog and an extra side if fries. For the price I was definitely expecting a good size pile of French fries and it was anything but. The main service area was pretty full so we had to go back to the picnic area to eat and there is no direct lighting, the only light s had was from an outbuilding behind us so we could only see the food enough to eat it and that definitely didn't help the taste. A small light in that picnic area at night would go a long way! As for my Large Marge my first bite was good but the rest was not at all the bottom bun was almost completely soaked through with juices and that never makes for a good sandwich. We ate our food immediately upon getting to the picnic area so this wasn't a case where my food sat for even minutes before I ate it or I would be willing to try to look past the soggy bun. The only reason I gave 3 stars is that we got a malt milkshake and after mixing it up a little it was very good. It was getting late, we were all tired and needed to get home. I would be happy to try the White Turkey again, hopefully have a better experience and update my review...
Read moreThis used to be one of my favorite places to eat and is a cornerstone of culture around Ashtabula County; however, now we only really come here for the atmopshere. The quality of the food has slipped considerably compared to what it used to be even 20 years ago and the taste can only be described as "Cafateria Food" at this point. Very sad and dissapointing to see a local icon relying on its fame and popularity instead of continuing to serve decent food. The food here is priced at a premium because of the massive droves of out-of-towners; but, at those prices, I would expect some half decent beef patties on the burgers. They taste worse than frozen, and the texture can only be described as "rubbery". There was a time long ago where the patties were sourced locally and hand made with love (I knew the butcher who used to make them for the Tuttles) Out of respect for our beloved establishment and the fond memories there, I've given 2 stars; but, those are only for the service and location, and no amount of that can make up for poor food quality. If White Turkey wants to attract return customers from the local area, they should consider increasing the quality of their staple foods back to what it once was, for now its simply an expensive and inconvenient trip down memory lane once a year. I'm sorry, someone...
