Unfortunately, have I to give Helen's Sausage House a low score. This rating is not because of the food, but the service. My husband and I arrived at the restaurant around 11:30 a.m. and ordered the sausage and egg sandwich. We were told that we would have to wait for them to cook more sausages. That wasn't an issue for us because we've always enjoyed Helen's sausages and didn't mind waiting. However, as we were waiting others customers came in the restaurant and placed their orders as well. So everyone had to wait for the sausages. That was not the problem. The problem developed when the sausages were ready. Everyone was served before my husband and I. Finally, the gentleman that was behind us when we first placed our order told my husband that our sandwiches had been given to the couple that came in after us. That is when we saw the cashier wait on everyone non African American before us. Not only were we last, but we didn't get the sausage and egg sandwich that we had already paid for. We were too upset and humiliated to return to the restaurant. Unfortunately, this trip was not a good one to Helen's...
Read moreI actually looked this up after an episode of JL Jupiters food review, a few days of wondering if it was still around. My son follows JL and pull up the episode and I said I know that place it's in Smyrna Delaware and JL told us where he was. As the episode progressed my son said I know that place too, pop pop took us there and the sandwiches were in foil. I said yep on the way to New York. It was satisfying to see that he remembered something from childhood. Certain things stick in your mind and Helen's Sausage House was one of them. Sloppy but very delicious great quality sausage. I have traveled many places and highlighted food for years. Could have been a vlogger if it was a thing in the 90's...While I was a food rater for various restaurants. GPS on lookout for Helen's because you can easily miss it. Worth the stop! JL Jupiter and Mark Wiens are great on the food vlogging scene, they even hooked up last year and gave us a great few programs in Philadelphia. Comfort food...
Read moreSaw an article about this place in "Only In Your State: DE" so our next trip to the beach we took the long way just so we could check this place out. Wasn't quite sure what to think when we first pulled up to the concrete, non-descript building that houses Helen's Sausage House but the line coming out the door spoke volumes. I patiently waited in line for 2 sausage sandwiches and after 1 bite I can honestly say that I would wait in that line in the pouring rain, they are beyond delicious. You get 2 sausages on a soft bun and you can add peppers, onions & cheese as well. You can tell how fresh these babies are, with each bite the sausage bursts with juicy goodness. We are so obsessed with these sausages that we now go 30 minutes out of our way to stop here first before heading to Dewey Beach on our monthly visits and I have another reason to move to DE to add to my ever growing list. Helen's sells other items as well but the sausage is...
