Ok, so in my mind, this is a short story of "the comeback." I was one of Little Italy's Midtown customers that was upset and annoyed when Slice took over, claimed they were using the same recipes, but their pizza just didn't measure up.
Tonight, I thought about giving them another (third) chance. But I was solo tonight, so I couldn't order the usual X-large pizza. Started scrolling through the online delivery menu.
And then I saw it. An Italian beef sandwich. I'll admit it; I was skeptical. Slice was a pizza joint not a Chicago sandwich shop, and was a joint that had let me down twice before. But I decided to risk it. I guess I'm a believer in third chances. My expectations were tempered.
Oh, man, was I shocked. Wonderfully shocked. This sandwich was absolutely first-rate. Well-seasoned and moist thin slices of roast beef, and a VERY generous portion, mild giardinaire for veg, and provolone (Chicagoans, yes I always get cheese on my Italian beef...shaddup 😉). The bread wasn't the traditional roll, but it was just the right texture...soft enough to eat easily, yet firm enough to stand up to dipping in the au jus. Because of delivery, the au jus is served on the side, but I'm sure you could order it "wet" in-store if you want. The au jus itself was rich and savory without being too salty, just the way I like it. Most importantly, the sandwich was properly constructed, with the provolone on the bottom to help structural integrity and ease for dunking. This, this was an outstanding sandwich in every respect.
The hand-breaded zucchini I also ordered was excellent and retained most of its crispiness. But I'd recommend that Slice punch just one or two small holes in the plastic lid on the container. This will allow steam to escape while not losing that much warmth.
But that sandwich. Oh, man.
When my wife gets home from her overseas business trip, we will definitely be giving your pizza another chance. If I can talk myself out of ordering that sandwich...
Read moreWow! Huge positive difference with new ownership. I d given up on little Italy completely due to wrong orders, old food, and bad customer service. All thar seems to have been drastically improved since becoming Slice. Ordered take out. VERY WELL PACKAGED!!! I love take out packed in environment and consumer friendly containers. There's a very nice balance with their to go containers of not being all terrible Styrofoam but not being leaky cheap low quality paper or un microwaveable aluminum. Everything was very fresh. Very generous portion size for baked ziti. Although it was a little bland but baked ziti isnt a very adventurous choice and I wanted something very simple today. Order was ready promptly. I do hope they will consider reserved spaces for take out as they become popular. I can't wait to order again and try the spaghetti sandwich!!!!!
Oh...almost forgot. The garlic knots are tiny and adorable. Served with tasty dipping sauce. The problem is they are so small and cute and one of the least expensive menu items, that one could easily eat a disturbing amount of these in a short period. I wanna shove a bunch of them in my cheeks like a heckin chipmunk. I m a grown adult that should not even be thinking such things. So consider yourself warned about the additiveness of the...
Read moreThis was my 3rd time ordering from here since it became Slice (formerly Little Italy). The first couple of times I ordered from Slice, I had negative experiences, but since I'd been ordering from Little Italy without issue for so many years I figured I'd give them a chance to get on their feet. But tonight was the last time. I ordered the Grandma Pie (my go-to) and it was just plain disgusting. A HUGE disappointment and a bit of a shock. The crust tastes like a bland fast food pizza like Little Caesar's or CiCi's -- not authentic Italian-American New York style pizza dough (and as a former New Yorker, I can spot the difference a mile away). The "fresh mozzarella" that comes on this pizza is clearly not fresh. The garlic was all piled onto one single slice, and the basil on piled on another slice (not evenly distributed), and on top of it all, the pizza arrived cold. Sorry, Slice. But you're just not living up to what Little Italy used to be. Oh, and I forgot to mention -- they've also raised prices while lowering quality. This will be my last order from what was formerly my favorite local...
