We've eaten at Smith's many times this past year after moving to the area. They have an extensive lunch and dinner menu featuring a variety of comfort foods. The breakfast menu is a little less robust, but features the typical eggs, omelets (3 egg), pancakes, waffles, meats, biscuits, gravy, and hash browns. They also offer a Sunday buffet, but I haven't tried it.
On this Thursday morning, we were in before 10 AM and couldn't order our usual chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, white gravy, green beans, and a dinner roll - which is almost always delicious (more on this later). Instead, she had pancakes with two scrambled eggs on the side and I had a western omelette (with sausage instead of ham), hash browns, and a biscuit with gravy instead of toast. A frosty bottomless glass of sweet tea helped lubricate the pipes.
My meal was, as usual, absolutely delicious. Her pancakes were a little overcooked, but still were very flavorful. The tea is almost always excellent. This brings me back to the previous "almost always" comment and the reason I gave four and not five stars.
We have, at times, experienced inconsistencies in the quality, quantity, and preparation of our chicken fried chicken meals. There have also been times when the sweet tea tasted a little off - I'm guessing because the prep and/or storage container(s) went too long without a scrub. We have also experienced the rare instance where our server underperformed. These events are unusual though. And as this restaurant has regularly 100 or more people to serve and the occasional bus load stopping for a meal during its transit along highway 13, the food volume and staffing support required to meet demand can be no small task.
Speaking of servers, on this day Kim took excellent care of us. Thank you! Johna, who is almost always there, greeted us like family. We appreciate the kindness. Many of the staff have a long history working here and they make their customers feel like...
Read moreHad to change my rating from 3 to 1. After having a bad experience the first time we decide we would try the restaurant one more time. My daughter had hair in her drink both times we came and it wasn't even her haircolor. Her food was also cold. I can't really remember what I got but the food was allright the first visit service just took awhile.
Well the second time we came I ordered a salad with chicken. I had one bite and it was awful. The cheese tasted like it went bad. I asked my partner if it was just me. He agreed that it tasted like maybe there was blue cheese in it. So we asked the waitress if it had blue cheese in it. She said that it did not. The tea was also very bitter and tasted old. My parter ended up sharing his meal with me. Anyway upon leaving we let the person and the counter know that the cheese didn't taste right. She couldn't even go check it to make sure it wasn't expired. She still charged us for the rest of the food sans the salad. I certainly would have handled the situation different if I had been the one in charge there . Neither of us are the type to complain much about food or service. I try to be the type that praises the employees for a job well done and will let management know because I know management usually has to deal with mainly complaints but this was awful and the service...
Read moreI'm new to the area and this is my first and probably last time to Smiths. First the pros Cute unique place, 2. Decent menu to pick from 3. Good fries ( my husband had fries. I sneaked a couple because I'm diabetic and should not eat them) 4. Great side salad if that matters to you Cons Young dark haired waitress was not happy with her job. She did OK but she came across as irritated you were there and that she had to wait on you. That alone for me is a buzzkill. Nothing worse than a cranky waitress while you are are trying to enjoy your very expensive night out. Pretty expensive but who isn't these days Be prepared for the steamed veg to be a tiny bowl of frozen drippy veg. Not fresh. The whitefish was seasoned good but pretty sure it was frozen and thrown on griddle. It was a pretty small piece and watery & rubbery, which is OK if I'm cooking for myself at home but eating put probably a little thicker and something tender and flaky is nice. The end of the story is I think if you get a decent waitress and pick something that is more of a specialty of theirs you will have an...
