When I was visiting my boyfriend -we are an interracial couple- and his family this past New Year weekend, he and his kids took me to this restaurant because it's one of their favorite places to eat -it was snowing. We came in and no one seated us, so we seated ourselves. Despite the twisted stares and whispers, I agreed to stay and try the place out. We waited several minutes for someone to come over but that never happened. While we were waiting, I caught the attention of TWO waitresses (at different times), and smiled at them as if to gesture that we were ready to order, but they only glared at me/us and passed on by. Another family came in shortly after and one of the same waitresses promptly greeted and seated them and immediately began taking their orders. My boyfriend waved hello at some regulars in the restaurant whom he'd known since he was a child -regulars who he had just seen the previous time he was there- but they too glared and refused to acknowledge him/us. I asked my boyfriend, "Can we please go somewhere else? We are clearly not welcomed here." When he realized what was happening -WE were being refused service because I am ethnic- we gathered the kids and left. All he could do was apologize, even though it's not his fault that hatred/evil still exists today as it did eons ago. Neither my boyfriend nor any of his family will ever visit the Rocking...
Read moreMy friend and I came in today for the breakfast buffet. Pretty basic stuff on the buffet, including some out-of-place items such as pork fried rice and kielbasa. No waffles (had flavorless pancakes and french toast.) No home fries (had undercooked hashbrowns). Scrambled eggs were over cooked. Bacon had a weird after taste (like left overs reheated). Sausage patties were good. Had cheesy scrambled eggs with green bell peppers which was ok, but the hero of that is the cheese and not the eggs. A sweet cinnamon bread dish which was good, but the texture was too dense. And what the hell are those things you called biscuits?! You could knock a mf out with one bc of how dense that dough is. Biscuits should have some fluff with a crusty but soft buttery outside. And the sausage gravy was extremely flavorless and sad. It was easy to tell there wasn't a sweet old granny pouring her love into Sunday breakfast in that kitchen. A bunch of teenage boys run the kitchen? It sure tasted like it. Its a little hole in the wall restaurant. There's a precedent that hole in the wall restaurants are a small town's best kept secret with the best food. Definitely disappointed. Wait staff was nice tho. I didn't like that the server stood at my table while i filled out the check and tip box. Gotta step up that flavor game. Id been looking forward to trying this place after a friend...
Read moreNot the prettiest Roadside Diner I've been to but I'm sure glad I stopped in. the rain was coming down and needed a moment the belly was grumbling so The Rocking Chair restaurant seem to be right up my alley. not too far off the expressway and easy to get to, so you walk in you seat yourself and the lady gets right to business drinks on the table odds and ends. when you look at the menu remember you're not at IHOP or Denny's real simple not too complicated so order up they've got all the regular stuff eggs and bacon sausage and Ham the way you want it pancakes and that stuff I got the skillet. the potatoes were great and the b&gs well let's just say I've had worse and that's not to say they're bad I'm just particular when it comes to my gravy. lots of other stuff on that menu when it comes to dinner time they have Buffet on certain days and it's not a cramped place it's actually pretty large. lots of seating making sure the locals and travelers are comfortable and taken care of. there's an awesome sweet tea they have I'd suggest that for a cool drink not too sweet in my opinion and when the check comes it didn't hurt too bad again I'm traveling we're calling it a vacation and it was definitely an experience so if you're traveling and you come across this sweet little place take time rocking the oversized rocking chair head inside...
