Champney's is a charming and interesting restaurant that falls somewhat shy of living up to the historic significance of the attached inn and area.
Walking into Champney's is a delightful experience. The rustic, but quite well maintained, inn and restaurant truly provide an uncommon, refined atmosphere to enjoy a meal. That said, the old building was a bit chilly on a frigid night, and navigating through the building to the restaurant is somewhat confusing.
While the rest of the experience was acceptable, the environment itself was the highlight. The dinner is on the pricier side, which was expected given the space, and the audience they seem to target, but at that price point, I want more from the experience. While the portions were adequate and the dishes cooked well, they lacked any notable seasoning or presentation, with multiple members of my party retorting that the dishes they ordered tried to rely on a couple of potent ingredients over a quality balance of seasoning, sauces, and ingredients. Still very edible, but a limited satisfaction while eating.
I would also hope for more attentive service at this price point. Our server did seem new; they were somewhat stiff, and very clearly reading from notes (which I have no problem with), but there were some rather long waits between our server's visits to our table, leaving us waiting to continue our meal experience on a couple of occasions, while the restaurant was far from busy. While the server was pleasant, this dragged out the meal in a less than satisfactory manner.
Overall, Champney's is an moderate dining experience with a wonderful atmosphere, where you can get a decent meal and pleasant (albeit it sparse) service, but you may leave feeling as though you paid more than...
Read moreReal nice comfort food and down to earth people. Had very enjoyable meal and a pleasant time for ingesting it.
One thing I noticed was they served up hamburgers, usually I personally prefer to eat where they aren't offered unless that's the main menu. I found with them on the menu, rest of their offerings most of the time suffer with taste or presentation. But here at Champney's, the Chouder, Salid, and Fish and Chips were to die for, what really awesome food was served and by a cuitey too, very pleasant server she was. And was wonderfuly rewarded graciously for her time and effort.
At first I thought the place was originally a house for a family. Come to find out that it was always an Inn with a Tavern downstairs. Good size bar that local couples sat around, with 3 seating areas placed around it each with multiple sized tables and padded benches.
What really was an awesome surprise was that in the entrance vestibule was a nice fire in a nice fireplace. Then afterwards in the Tavern part I found a second fireplace with a beautiful fire burning. The comfort and feel of the ambient space heated in this way is unsurpassed and very elegant and enjoyable.
Mr. P. Says, smile. I will be going back, except for dinner not lunchtime. Seams more choices are offered for the latter part of the day. 🤔🍔☹, ...
Read moreI had the extreme displeasure of witnessing (assuming the manager) Kyle, long red har verbally assault a the hostes. She was maybe 16. This poor girl made a mistake with seating and this manager spoke to her in the most demeaning way. We watched this girl as she suffered a verbally abusive attack by her manager. This employee had to just stand there and take a minutes long angry lecture. This woman has no business managing employees let alone kids. She is angry and mean spirited who insults and belittles her employees instead of teaching and motivating. Imagine my excitement when we moved to the bar and she repeated the exact same behavior on another employee. This is all being done in front of guests for all to hear and witness. This is not the first time I have seen this manager behave this way, as we have been here before. Someone needs to take notice of this woman's terrible management of her employees. If I were the parent of the girl she verbally assaulted I would be speaking to her hire ups and would not allow her to be in that women's employ, let alone work for a business who allowed this behavior. Wake up and take notice, before someone's...
