Three strikes you’re out ! The picture shows what a $25 Keylime pie should look like. What I got was something that looks like it came from the grocery store. This is a small town. I genuinely want to discover businesses that I have not tried, especially those small businesses run by a family or an entrepreneur. The pie lady used to have her business downtown. When I asked, She explained that she moved 5 miles out of town so she could better afford to have a restaurant and her pie business. I went to her place of business and selected a frozen Keylime pie. For me it seemed very expensive, $24. Because I bought it on Wednesday I got a 10% discount. I paid with a credit card that was processed through her phone with some attachment. I only pressed one button which declined leaving a tip, because I don’t tip people for handing me something across the counter. Maybe you do I don’t know 10 minutes later. I get a phone call from her. She had my number because I called her to ask her what kind of pies she had ready to go. This is where it gets weird. She said I seemed like I was in a hurry. Suddenly, I think oh no, I left my credit card. Then she tells me that I hit the wrong button and that she slightly overcharged me for the pie. She told me that I would have to come back by our shop and bring my credit card so that I could be refunded. She definitely acted like it was my fault. I certainly didn’t see a button for extra charge or press the button twice. I was headed out of town with the pie. I told her I would be back later to get the refund. She told me she closed at seven. I started thinking about it and I called her back. I said how much did I get charged extra? It was then she informed me that I was double charged and then I could come and get a refund or pick up another pie. I told her I would be back for the refund. Hours later, I returned with my credit card. She got out her phone and the attachment and showed me that she had gone ahead and made the adjustment and fully refunded my money. So there was no need for me to go out of my way to show up physically with my credit card. She could’ve just called me and I would’ve taken her word or checked my statement. Strike three was when her employee, relative or maybe the cook asked me how the pie was. I told her it was fine. There was an awkward silence from her and then she pushed back “just fine she asked?“ I said yes, it was fine. I think it’s really pushy to ask for a compliment. But I’ll tell you right now. It was nothing about the pie that would lead me to believe that it was handmade. It wasn’t bad. It tasted like Keylime pie, but it was just the graham cracker crust with a mousse like consistency that tasted like Keylime pie. Keylime pie is my favorite and if I pay $25 for a custom handmade pie, it should have some twists of the Keylime peel, maybe a fluted crust. Or some other garnishment. It was nothing special. If she made it with key limes, the peel could be used to garnish. A dab of whipped cream in the middle maybe? Marie Callender‘s Keylime straight from Walmart is a better pie and it’s available for about half or less. I didn’t appreciate being pressed for a fake compliment. I didn’t appreciate having to drive all the way back. And I didn’t appreciate dealing with a merchant that does not have their payment system competent/ together. That’s three strikes you’re out. I hate riding bad reviews of people. But this was ridiculous. I could have overlooked the value of the pie. She could’ve been straight with me about the double charge without trying to blame me for it. Why they didn’t have a regular credit card processor I don’t know. Now I have to check with my credit card company to look for any errors. I hope they get their stuff together. I will not...
Read morePlease read everything, and I hope the owners see this because I love this place after visiting it, and I want it to be a must go-to place for anyone passing through this town.
First off you need to stop by and get their cornbread a slice of pie, and their Arnold Palmer mix, these 3 items are the best I've ever had. I never thought corn bread could taste so good, and to be 100% honest these 3 things are the only thing that needs to be in the menu to say it's worth stopping by.
The lady that served us was the sweetest lady and loved being served by her, and honestly I just didn't have the heart to say what I have to say next to her in person as I couldnt bear seeing her after telling her the problems I had with the rest of the meal.
Please understand im writing this review because I want them to improve these dishes or dishes like them because they're so close to being great,
I ordered the pan fried chicken with a double side of Mac and cheese and a side of rice, and a friend of mine got the fried catfish nuggets with fries.
The pan fried chicken was cooked really well, the texture was awesome, crispy skin and the chicken wasn't dry, but cooked well. Not the juiciest but that's fine as the skin being crispy will generally keep you from getting it the juiciest possible.
The main problem with the chicken is it was extremely bland. Almost like it had no salt in the cooking process, but honestly I feel that a spicy rub, or even better and chilli oil to bath over it would compliment the crispy skin so much this chicken would be to die for.
The fried catfish being the next thing I want to comment on falls under a very similar pretense, great texture and breading, but since catfish is a gamier taste without a spice or much seasoning it holds that in the final product too much.
Both of these dishes were what I would say are edible but lacking a lot for me considering how amazing the cornbread and pie was.
Now the biggest problems, the mac and cheese and rice. Honestly the texture in both again were great BUT, I think there's something wrong with the water they use in their cooking process as both the rice and Mac and cheese tasted heavily of what I would say is calcium. I imagine they're just using tap water for these, and maybe they just need to use a purified water for these to really fix it, but I could be wrong. Also besides this the serving size of the sides are extremely small, and honestly I would argue even with the corrections to the taste, the price of the full dish with the sides isn't fully worth the price here.
Over all of this was a little sip tea rest stop where you got some corn bread and pie as a snack I'd give this 5 stars with no second thought. But with the meals for lunch being served being such a mixed feeling on the experience I can only give this 4 stars right now, because I think people need to eat the corn bread and pie.
Best of luck guys it's a great little place and the things that are good are...
Read moreI had a hard time finding this restaurant. It's hidden in an alley and the best way to find it is to locate the Wells Fargo bank and park in their lot. (Thank you circle K) I wanted to try their pies!!! I ordered for take out a slice of each: pecan, peach, millionaire, and a slice of buttermilk. Along with 4 slices of their cornbread. 2 of the jalapeno and 2 regular. Altogether it came to $49.15 I say this because there are a lot of reviews online saying their food is overpriced. I have to disagree. The pies are AMAZING!!! And Worth every penny. Flaky crust and just so so good. And the cornbread? Just as good but I have to say that jalapeno cornbread I could eat that everyday for the rest of my life. So I'm assuming the rest of the menu is just as good. I just happen to have a sweet tooth. Ha ha ha ha I mention the price to say this if you are on a budget and have a family or a single Mom with kids it's probably best to get one of their whole pies for $22.00 instead of individual slices. And there all so good it's really just a matter of preference. This restaurant reminded me so much of my grandmother. My grandparents owned a farm in AR. and she did all her own canning, quilting, sewing and cooking EVERYTHING was home made. So again the people who claim the food here is overpriced? Keep in mind everything is LITERALLY home made. And I can see my grandmother rolling out those dumplings and or pie crust. People this takes a lot of time, love and hard work. But my oh my is it ever worth it. Nothing compares to home made. And like the saying goes you get what you pay for. I suggest you don't leave NM without at least having a slice of their pie and holy macaroni and cheese That jalapeno cornbread!!!! It is the best EVER. No lie. OMG. Yum!!!!! ...
