Thunder Road grill & bar — Restaurant in Des Moines

It took us a bit to find this place as the tracks were closed. We had to drive around to get here. Small dive bar (just like we like to find) it was pretty bright for a friday night. The TV was playing Godzilla and the beer was a tad flat but cold. Still drinkable. The food was AWESOME!!! There was a limited menu, but the chicken sandwich was one of the best I have ever had. Not too much breading and cooked perfect! The waitress was very friendly and service was good. There wasn't a lot of people here, but I chalk that up to being hard to get to from the fairgrounds. I’ll tell you what. I’ve never walked into somewhere that is called a bar and felt so comfortable it didn’t matter if I drank alcohol or not. The new owners are freaking awesome. Dewey, the cook? You can definitely tell he enjoys what he doesn’t and he’s got experience. Man knows how to COOK. The buffalo chicken sandwich is good, the fries are good, and every type of taco he makes is delicious. Don’t get me started on how good he cooks steak. The service is great, food and drinks come quick. Although it’s to often be considered a biker bar, anyone can get along with each other there which is much cooler than certain bars in the area. Nice place and great people, appears to be changing things up to improve the overall experience and atmosphere. What they are doing doesn't appear to be just for show, looks like they are putting the work and money into the place to make it better.

Food exceeded my expectations for a typical bar, there food had flavor and most appears to be made onsite, not the normal frozen items that many bars try to pass off as meals.

Can't wait to see all the changes in the next few months, but what they are already doing has made me a returning customer.
