I heard about Sweet Potato Sensations reading an article about recommended restaurants in Detroit. It sounded good so I put it on my "want to check out" list.
There were many great things & some that could use improvement in my opinion: -The greeting message when you call is outstanding; she sounds so cheerful, friendly, & really uplifting :) -The customer service; both women working the day I went were very friendly. The one answering the phones was very friendly too but I called once on my way there to try to place my take out order ahead of time and was on hold for 10 minutes and gave up. I also called when I got home because I was missing an item and was on hold 11 minutes so hung up and called back later when I finally did get to talk without being asked to hold. She was sincerely sorry about the missing item & made a note of it so I could come back the next day to get it. To their credit - they were super busy & I think they were doing their best but I think the restaurant needs to come up with some better systems to handle the high demand moments. Also, if there's a missing item on a take out order something to compensate me for my trouble is recommended. I live 15 minutes away which I why I didn't come back the same day to get my item. I waited until I was out again the next day, but it was still out of my way to return for it. -The food was hot and fresh even though they were so busy. I appreciate the option to receive my receipt via text because they also texted me when my order was about to be ready. That being said, another example of the need for a better system is that I received the text that my food was coming up from the kitchen & would be bagged & ready shortly. 10 minutes later, still waiting so I approached the counter & let the employee know. She went & checked & sure enough the food was ready & she bagged it up but had I not said anything, who knows how much longer I would have waited. Again, there was a line almost out the door so both employees were taking orders - but some system to alert them at the front counter when an order is ready is needed. -The Mac & cheese was amazing: gooey & cheesy goodness with great flavor. -The candied yams also amazing flavor. -the greens were bitter & lacked flavor. Even though I could see pieces of meat cooked in for flavor, there just wasn't any. Didn't even taste salt or garlic or anything - just bitter greens. -the chicken wings were nice & crispy but I think also kinda plain in taste. -the salmon croquettes had a nice taste & crispiness but could have used a sauce or something to add moistness. I notice in the pictures they put something on the sandwich to meet that need but I had the dinner which didn't have any kinda sauce. -the sweet potato waffle was a nice flavor. -the corn bread muffin was pretty good too. -The most distinct flavorful item that I would come back for more of, was the peach cobbler! I imagine the other 2 flavors of cobbler are probably equally divine and I would definitely come back to try those and some of their pies because those looked really good too! -The in store menu had more items then noted online including the side dishes. It would be good to update the hours on the website as they are different then the ones noted on Google and in the store.
Overall, I see why they are on the list of Detroit restaurants to try because it is a unique experience; they've done more than I've mentioned using sweet potatoes and you can tell they are making everything excellently. Plus, it's always great to support local businesses and even within the restaurant, they are doing that themselves having a store within the restaurant with clothing, lotions, jewelry, etc. Definitely check them out if you're...
Read moreThe first impression is what sticks. I called to confirm that they were open on Sunday 9/12/2020 @12pm. Yes, they were open and lady with a very professional sound voice answered and said we will look forward to seeing you at 12pm. So the wait was about 15 mins before opening. I made sure my husband and I were wearing our masks. As soon as we hit the door the one of the ladies said sanitize your hands please. Ok, we sanitized and were the only customers. No problem. Done. My husband asked if he could ask a âquestionâ to possibly find out which pies on shelf..these are different kinds of pies. There were two ladies behind the counter and the response was âIâm on the phone taking a order and when Iâm done I could help youâ . (He wasnât directing the question to her in the first place) So, the other lady that told us to sanitize was standing right beside her doing something on her cell phone. Thatâs who the question in particular was addressed to her, she looked up very arrogantly and said...âThe signs are right thereâ and continued doing what she was doing. So, mind you âifâ he couldnât read. But that wasnât the case. It was (as if he was bothering her by asking) He continues to look on the shelf at the different pies of assortments until we got what we intended âsweet potatoe piesâ and placed them on the counter to pay. She instantly looked up to take the credit card to charge for the purchase. Purchasing was easy but the âcustomer serviceâ was terrible. Thank God, It wasnât for a special occasion or catering in which we normally do at times. When you donât care to present you customer service skills in a work place that you call your own âfamily businessâ, it says a lot of who you really are. She sounded pleasant over the phone but in person was a terrible first time experience! To say all that âthis ainât thatâ I wonât be going BACK! I will just continue to make my own pies like I always have. Their pies could be just as bad I havenât tried them yet. Besides I may just donate them to...
Read moreAfter reading reviews and loving all things sweet potato... oh AND it being black owned... I knew I had to stop here while visiting Detroit. We drove about 35 minutes to get here and I was so excited. We enter the restaurant and notice thereâs only one person inside eating. I also Notice the two owners (recognize them from the website) sitting at the counter. Thereâs also two people behind the counter at the register. No one greeted us. After about three minutes I was up to the older lady and young man behind the counter and ask if we could get some help. The older lady asks us if we were dining in, I said no, and she became totally dismissive. She went back to what looked to be her training the young man. I keep trying to make eye contact with the two ladies chatting on the stools at the counter, but they continues to ignore us. If it has not been for the 35 minute drive I would have left. I continued to look around at the things they had for sale, but I knew at that point I wasnât giving them too much of my business. The two people Iâd come with decides that they werenât going to spend any money AT ALL! After about another 7 minutes one of the ladies from the website finally says âdo yâall need somethingâ? Are you serious? No, weâre just here to watch you two cackle! My friend says âyes, she wants to order somethingâ. With attitude she summons another young man who at least acknowledged us. I ordered the sweet potato cheesecake and the sweet potato cheesecake ice cream. Wanted to try the cookies and waffles but I could not get over how rude and univiting they were!
The ice cream was okay, definitely tasted like sweet potato pie.. but the sweet potato cheesecake left a lot to be desired. Definitely wasnât worth putting up with their...
