After browsing through the National Museum of the Marine Corps, we sat down for lunch at the Tun Tavern, which was a colonial era tavern that serves beers, soups, appetizers, sandwiches, entrees, and desserts.
We felt that our female server was pushy and aggressive. Knowing that it was our first time at the restaurant, she didn't really give us time to glance the menu.
We were surprised that the last thing that was served was the Fried Pickle Chips, which were kosher dill pickle slices that were seasoned with salt and pepper, breaded, deep fried, and served with ranch dressing.
My mom ordered a bowl of Minestrone Soup and a Virginia Crab Cake Sandwich. She asked if anything was going to be spicy but the server said no. The Minestrone Soup was more peppery than she had hoped. The Crab Cake Sandwich consisted of a pan seared crab cake topped with tomato and lettuce in between toasted buns and served with a tangy and spicy remoulade sauce. It would have better with regular tartar sauce.
My dad ordered the Militia Chicken sandwich, which consisted a chargrilled chicken breast topped with cheddar, sauteed mushrooms, tomato, and lettuce in between toasted buns, and served with homemade Old Bay chips. It was okay.
My brother ordered the Turkey Burger, which consisted of a turkey patty topped with cheddar, grilled onions, and bbq sauce with crispy sweet potato fries. It was okay.
I ordered the Reuben Sandwich, which consisted of corned beef seared and topped with swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and thousand island dressing in between toasted marbled rye toast, and served with a kosher dill pickle and Old Bay chips. It...
Read moreInside is really cute looks like a little pub, it is small and very loud, good luck talking to your lunch mate. We had fish and chips with sweet potatoes fried, was pretty good, fish was a little greasy but it’s not like it’s a pub and you came just for fish and chips.
We also had the Greek salad with falafel, the falafel was pretty good you get three pieces I can’t remember what the extra charge was maybe $3 or $4 dollars at least they were done some places down cook it all the way and sometimes it is doughy inside. Salad had plenty of dressing I would add it on the side though since we shared the salad and all the dressing went to the bottom.
The sauce they give you for fish and chips was good as well.
Inside is clean they try to clean the tables right when the people leave so that nice. This keeps everything nice and tidy.
Serve was good, they were kind and they brought the food out when it was ready since it was still hot.
We would come...
Read moreWe found the tavern after walking the memorial trail next to the museum. We could smell the burgers and were lured in by the aroma.
The food is surprisingly decent for a museum. The Militia burger is pretty sizable and comes with a side of fries that are always hot and crispy. The wraps are a pretty generous size too so keep that in mind if you're not too hungry.
The service is always great. Quick, attentive, and friendly.
The tavern is located on the second floor of the museum opposite of the elevators and decorated to mimic the original tavern. There isn't a large amount of space (maybe 10 or so tables and the bar) so if the museum is crowded, be prepared to wait but you can make reservations. More than likely, if there is an event going on, be prepared to wait.
All in all, I definitely suggest giving it a try. You may be...
