Went on Cinco de Mayo with the girlfriend and was really, really not impressed. Main complaint is WILDLY high prices for the quality of food and drink. Restaurant charges upscale prices for very run-of-the-mill Mexican food you'd find at any cheap local place. Service is okay, no big problems there.
Right away, Chips and Salsa aren't free, believe they were $7 which is heresy for a Mexican restaurant. Margaritas were small, expensive, made with cheap ingredients, and served in cheap plastic cups (think a 12 oz marg was $12-13). A bigger 16oz margarita made with El Toro (very low grade tequila) was $16 and served in a flimsy clear plastic cup, like what? Both margaritas tasted cheap and boozy which would have been fine if they were $6 - $8.
Nachos were lame for the $12+ price, just cheddar cheese blend melted over a relatively small pile of chips with black olives and tomato chunks thrown on top. Sour cream/guacamole did not come out until we were halfway done with them and the whole thing was a soggy mess. Felt like a happy hour $6 plate of nachos. Again, price was the problem here, the actual food wasn't horrible, just okay.
Got the "Loco Platter" to split, which consisted of two tacos, two burritos, beans/rice, a flauta, three jalapeno poppers, and a very small quesadilla ($35 or so, should have been $20 or less). Tacos were very dry but tasted alright, burritos dry, flauta was good, quesadilla again tasted okay but was dry, poppers were... poppers. General quality was again, okay. Nothing offensive.
Overall we had two margaritas, a cheap domestic beer (Estrella), nachos, and the platter... overall bill with tip was over $100. Honestly should have been under $50 for the quality of food/drink. Really blown away how high the bill was for a very subpar meal.
Loco Perro is a quick and dirty kind of Mexican place, price on their menu should reflect. They seem to think they're slinging high-class Mexican dishes when they're barely beating Taco Bell in terms of quality. Certainly get better bang for your buck at Taco Bell, I'll probably go there...
Read moreDecided to give this place a try for dinner tonight, despite being a little hesitant from some of the previous reviews I've seen. At first, the price for some of the food seemed a bit excessive (some items were also compatible to other competitors price points, though), but once our food came I was pleasantly surprised by the portions of the food - they were a lot bigger than I am used to getting at other Mexican restaurants. Flavor was spot on, meat (steak) was tender, and they absolutely loaded the quesadillas with vegetables, cheese, and meat. My wife ordered enchiladas with tomatillo sauce (green sauce) and she said the flavor was spot on to homemade tomatillo sauce. The rice and beans that came with the enchiladas looked underwhelming at first glance, but both packed surprising flavor and texture, and again, was much better than other restaurants I've tried.
I will agree with previous reviews that the first thing offered to us was chips and salsa as an appetizer- it is not explicitly stated that this is for a fee and not complimentary. We declined anyways, so this was a non-issue for us.
The service, like the food, speaks for itself. My wife and I were greeted outside before even stepping foot in the restaurant and were immediately seated at a table. The waitress was really friendly, sociable, and very attentive to our needs. She checked in often and asked us if we needed any refills on drinks. When the kitchen was running a little behind on our food, she clearly communicated this with us. I believe it was the owner (gentleman who greeted and sat us earlier) also checked in with us several times before we left to make sure we were satisified with our meal. Nowdays you can't find this kind of hospitality almost anywhere, and it was quite refreshing. This experience was definitely A++ and we will be back for sure. If you're on the fence about trying this place, I highly...
Read moreI have been to Loco Perro a number of times and I swear I am trying to find something on the menu that will make me really like this place , but I don’t. The atmosphere is pretty good…it’s festive enough and the staff was attentive and friendly. The owner was mingling among customers at least a few times I was there, which is good. But the food is super bland, uncreative, and prices are on the high side.
The gauge of a good Mexican restaurant is always their guacamole…And It pains me to say that right out of the gate, the guacamole did not taste fresh, appeared processed, and I didn’t see or taste any cilantro, lime or salt. At $21, the chicken fajitas dinner didn’t come with rice and beans (or any sides). And at $16 my small taco salad was about the size of my fist, and, as someone who prefers to eat vegan, it did NOT come without a meat for a slightly lower price. Lastly ,my son’s burrito was left unfinished by a kid who will eat anything. The prices would be fine if they spiced their food right, threw in more fresh ingredients, gave you a side dish, and if I saw more creativity in the selections. Finally, this restaurant is NOT VEGAN FRIENDLY like most Mexican restaurants. When I asked the lovely waitress if the kitchen could tweak a dish or two, the answer was NO.
I can see that management does read and respond to these reviews— so if you’re listening, please introduce freshly made guacamole to your menu that’s salted properly with cilantro and a good amount of lime; throw in a small side dish with the entrees; find a few good salads for the menu; include a fish dish that’s not fried; and some veggie tacos (no cheese) with fresh herbs and spices would really...
