We were excited for our most recent visit to Catherineās, as we had enjoyed it so much previously. Unfortunately, we had a different experience this time. Due to a reservation error (which did turn out to be our fault), the owner/manager/hostess unpleasantly explained that we had no table. While explaining to my parents and elderly mother in law that there had been a mistake, and trying to shuffle my family out the door, the same woman begrudgingly created a table for us. We were so pleased, but she was obviously angry. I should have taken the hint & left, but since we had traveled from out of state, we opted to dine there. Dinner started well, with Adam, a truly excellent server. Apparently he got wind that we were to be treated like a leprosy colonyā¦. And the wonderful service stopped once our order was taken. The actual food was fantastic, but our table was completely ignored after our food was delivered. We enjoyed our meal despite the frosty feeling we were getting. Almost 45 minutes after we finished, we had to seek out our check. No offers of coffee, no dessert menu⦠and just to prove a point, the same chilly woman who greeted us on our arrival then came to our table to show us & all diners around us, that the mistake on reservations had been mine. Please know that despite our initial disappointment- we didnāt make a fuss, didnāt demand a table, and even suspected that it was our error. Catherineās offered us a table, which they certainly didnāt need to do. And truly I wish they hadnāt. Who ever the woman running the show was, she was far more concerned with being right than being considerate. Sadly we will never return. We paid far too much to be treated so poorly. Thankfully there are so many fabulous alternatives!! Note to Catherineās, I do not subscribe to the saying āThe customer is always right.ā, but I do believe in common courtesy. There was no need to intentionally belittle my family. Please do better in the future. Best wishes on an improved attitude, which will pair well with the delicious food....
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe discovered Catherine's by accident when we drove by it on our way back to Delaware from somewhere else. We were very impressed overall. The setting is lovely. The is plenty of seating indoors and the outdoor garden seating is beautiful in nice weather. Our server was friendly and very knowledgeable regarding the menu. Everything was delicious from the hot crusty bread with homeade tapanade, to a delicious scallop appetizer, and excellent main courses. We also appreciated not being rushed so we could enjoy being outdoors on a lovely evening. A couple of notes if you plan to attend. 1. Tips are given in cash only which was the one thing we found strange. You can pay for the meal with a card but you can't tip with one. 2. Parking, and entry to the restaurant is in the back. 3. The restaurant, like many in Kennett Square, is BYOB. All those things side Catherine's is well...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe atmosphere is kitschy and somewhat eclectic. When they say they open at 6:00 pm, don't expect them to open 10 seconds sooner than that, regardless of how many people are standing around in the patio area waiting to get in... HINT: do a soft opening, folks.
The food was great, but not worth the amount that they are charging. It's clear that they are trying to be an upscale, bougie place that caters to the hipster crowd. Some friends of ours treated us to a meal here so we didn't have to make the reservation or any of that. They bring bread and have some very odd condiment for it, but no bread plates and butter is not an option.
One other drawback: BYOB and a $15 corking fee. Seems like they just do not want people to have alcohol here. HINT: get a liquor license and serve wine or do not charge a corking fee that says "We don't really want to...
