We had heard about Shotgun Eddy's from various people but had yet to go visit. A week ago (02/21/2022), on a whim, we headed down to try it. We were not disappointed.
For appetizers, we had mozzarella cheese sticks and fried mushrooms. If you like them, you'll like these. They were served with Red Gold marinara sauce for the sticks & a good ranch for the mushrooms. Tasty like they are everywhere.
One friend got the Eddy Burger and sweet potato fries. The burger was made from locally sourced beef as all their beef is from my understanding. The burger was thick and juicy and the sweet potato fries were cooked just right.
My other friend and I got the same entree, ribeyes cooked medium rare and a piece of catfish. The steak, which is not on the regular menu but was a special that night, was cooked perfectly and seasoned very well. No sauce required! The catfish had a crispy, well-seasoned cornmeal coating and was light & flaky on the inside. Ideal. As a lifelong southern Illinoisan, I love catfish and order it in a lot of different places. This was right up at the top of the list for taste and texture. It actually shares the top spot with a couple other local spots for me.
My friend got french fries and I got a salad with our proteins. The salad was made with greens and various chopped vegetables. Very satisfying.
They serve Coca-Cola products and various beers at the bar.
Our server was friendly and accommodating and knowledgeable about the menu. She was quite welcoming when she found out it was our first time there.
Upsides: 1.Welcoming staff Pleasant service Well-seasoned meat/fish Friday night fish fries (I'm ready to go back!) Good beverage selection.
Downsides: If you're a beer drinker who prefers yours on tap, you're out of luck. They serve only bottles/cans, BUT they have wonderful frosty mugs they'll bring you if you want/need. It's a little out of the way. It's a good 20 minute drive south of Harrisburg, BUT that gives you time to work up an appetite AND if the sun is still up, you get to see some of southern Illinois' prettiest land. The fries weren't salted. At all. Fries have to be salted as soon as they come out of the grease or it's just not the same. BUT, it's possible this was an oversight. I'll be happy to test that theory and get back to you.
If you haven't been, do try it. If you have been, I'm sure I'll see you there again sometime because I'll definitely be...
Read moreWe had a really bad experience with Veronica. Everyone was very nice with the exception of Veronica. My sister and I came in yesterday evening. It wasn’t busy at all so we sat at the bar and in a few minutes Veronica tossed 2 menus on the counter toward us and walked away. Actually we were wondering if this was a close knit community and we weren’t welcome. She did not ask if we wanted a drink. A couple more people came in, sat at the bar and she went right to them and asked them if they wanted a drink. They had drinks and their order placed before she even asked if we wanted to order. Veronica went away somewhere. After about 15 minutes I went over to a young woman by the cash register and asked if she could get someone to wait on us. She went to Veronica and nicely told her we were waiting. I felt so sorry for the young woman. Veronica snapped at her, poor thing. In a couple minutes Veronica walked over to us and we ordered to go but she still did not ask us if we wanted a drink. We then waited 30-40 minutes and no food. Another customer came in and sat at the bar for 5 or 10 minutes. Then another lady in a plaid jacket was very nice, and asked the lady sitting at the bar if she could help her and she told her she had a to go order. The plaid jacket lady asked us if we had been helped. I told her we were waiting for our to go order. The plaid jacket lady came back with the other to go order and checked her out. A few minutes later Veronica came out with our order. We assumed the plaid jacket lady had said something to Veronica, which we appreciated. The food was cold. It had been sitting in the back for a good amount of time. Honestly, we were not coming back today. We really thought this was not a friendly community. However, tonight we sat in a booth and were greeted quickly with a smile, gave our food and drink order and had the food quickly. We felt welcome and the food was fresh and very good. Management ought to watch Veronica’s work closely and give her customer service training, and if she doesn’t want to do...
Read moreWe ate here several times while we were down in the area for a couple days because there isn't much else close to where we stayed. First visit got sandwich and fries to go. Fries were ice cold and we were staying just 3 miles down the road. Next morning went for breakfast. Everything was good but when she brought our coffee she didn't bring any creamer, sugar or sweetener ( or even ask if we needed them) and my husbands side order of sausage was forgotten. There was only two other tables so not like they were real busy. The third visit was what made me write this review. We went in and gambled and drank for about an hour. Then we ordered a pizza to go. We were told up front that pizza's take awhile (around 45 minutes) because they are made from scratch. We had no problem with that so We drank and gambled for another hour and a half before finally asking if she could check on our pizza. She went back to the kitchen, came back and said " we have a problem the kitchen says they never got the order" not sure where the communication failed but the bartender assured us it wasn't her fault. She did not offer to comp us any drinks for the delay or or even offer a free drink if we wanted to wait while they made another one, she just said they could make something for us that wouldn't take so long. Also they should stock up on their t-shirts. They advertise T-shirts but don't have any to sell unless you need a small or 2x . Also have to agree with the other review. Flies...
