I'm loving this place!
Firstly, I am disappointed to see past reviews saying that staff were unmasked; I'm hoping that those reviews were taken to heart, because I visited several times recently, and everyone was masked up.
So, personally, as someone who is overly cautious about covid, I would feel comfortable returning any time.
Secondly, the food has been GREAT! 🥰 I stopped in this Thursday and tried their weekly street taco special for the first time. The flavors in the tacos alone were great (nicely seasoned meat, fresh onions and cilantro and the perfect amount of queso fresco)--and the evidently house-made sauce made them absolutely perfect.
They were served with fresh chips, moist, flavorful rice, and a fresh salsa that is suddenly, absolutely one of my favorites anywhere (and I sincerely consider myself to be an amateur salsa connoisseur). They should can it and sell it as a standalone: it's mildly hot with a perfectly appealing amount of sweetness.
My only complaint about the street tacos is that--while the tortillas were fresh and tasty--the tacos are served with only one tortilla each. It's not that I'm overly picky about street authenticity--it's just that the tacos fall apart a little too easily. Two tortillas would make them both more authentic and make them easier to eat without a fork.
Nonetheless, I'm already planning to get them again really soon. 🙂
I also want to highlight the breakfast sandwich. It sounds pretty standard: eggs and cheese with optional add-ons. But I had mine with bacon and was delightfully surprised to get a nice, smoky flavor from it--not to mention the relatively thick cut. It made my day. No boring, standard, grocery-store bacon here. And the hash browns on the side were excellent.
Another very minor complaint that does not affect my review: when I ordered the sandwich, American cheese was offered as an option.
Folks, this is Wisconsin. And American cheese is not cheese. Take some more pride in your cheese. Please don't offer American unless someone specifically asks for it.
I had my sandwich with cheddar, and it was perfect.
Then there's the coffee. They serve Collectivo. If you're also a coffee-lover who lives in Wisconsin, you'll understand why I would rank Collectivo as one of my favorite roasters in WI--if not anywhere in the region.
Service! I'm also sad to hear that others have had bad experiences, but I've only ever had wonderful service here.
Atmosphere! I never visited before the name change/renovation a while back--but I love it as it is now. The layout and decor are both modern and cozy. Simply delightful.
Prices? I've seen some reviews again that said that things are overpriced, but in my experience so far, I completely disagree. You're getting fresh, house-made food with quality comparable to what you might nearby get only in Madison. And even the breakfast sandwich: most people could make two meals out of it. If you want lower prices, go to McDonald's and lower your expectations to the level of "I'm giving up."
Bottom line: I LOVE this place. I hope that they will thrive, because our little town of Edgerton needs places of this excellent quality. I'd love to see them expand their advertising and draw more people in from Janesville and even Madison--it's worth the short drive.
Sadly enough, I'll be moving away from Edgerton in the near future, but I plan to come back to Cafe on Main as often as possible. It's one of those little places that make Wisconsin the best state in the country.
And if you happen to be driving by Edgerton on the interstate on a Thursday and go to that disgusting Taco John's when you could otherwise get your money's worth at Cafe on Main, I will find you, and we will...
Read moreOne of the first things I noticed upon walking into the restaurant was the smiles on faces of both customers and the table staff, and that it was busy. The reasons why became apparent quickly. First, the servers were cheerful and pleasant, and were helpful in describing menu items. Our table server was Sierra. She was delightful, and provided great insights into the menu. In watching them, it appears all of the servers have been instructed to up-sell, but did so in a natural and polite way. From what I saw, they all seemed like genuinely nice people, which sets the stage for the entire experience.
In addition to reacting well to the table servers, customers also were happy with the food. The breakfast menu is extensive, and based on my experience with their eggs benedict and American fries, I look forward to returning to work my way through the many other things that look good. My only small issue, was that the poached eggs were just slightly overcooked, but hey still were acceptable. I also was very happy that all of our food came out from the kitchen right away, and it was all fresh and hot. There are too many times at other places lately, where I have been served food that was cold, cool or barely luke warm, and that is a big bugaboo with me. It was great to have our food served fresh and hot here.
Overall, a great experience, and well worth a...
Read moreI haven't been in this restaurant in years; in fact, I haven't been there since it was Ray's. I'm quite pleased to say that it is now one of my new favorites. Last week, I took my daughter and father there for breakfast and tried a southwest omelette. Wow, that was outstanding. One of my favorite things in the morning is fresh squeezed orange juice, too. Today I went back and got fresh grease orange juice and sourdough toast togo. Much to my delight, the sourdough toast was grilled, lightly buttered, and came with plenty of jelly. The quality and portion sizes are great. Best of all, the staff that I've encountered thus far have been very friendly and provided great service. Keep up the good work!
Reading some of the other comments they mention how busy it is. I understand it can be very busy in the morning hours on the weekends especially. There are a lot of tables in this restaurant as well as a nicely refurbished, old fashioned dairy bar where you can sit at the counter, too. There's also plenty of parking including very accessible handicap...
