The BlackTop Bar and Grill — Restaurant in Elgin

Ate here one time a few weeks ago and the server was attentive and the food was good. Tonight was another story. We came in at just after 7, so almost an hour before close, plenty of time for a quick wrap. Our server, Gabe, didn’t write any orders down, which isn’t a problem if things are remembered correctly. But, my order was very simple, a Chicken Bacon Wrap with no tomatoes and no sides (due to allergies). The wrap came out with the food for the rest of the party but it had tomatoes on it. I brought it to the servers attention that it should have been no tomatoes and was just told “sorry” and then the server walked away. It was said in a tone where it was made to seem like it was my fault for ordering no tomatoes. About 5ish minutes later, after clearly not touching the plate, the server came back and asked “oh, did you need us to remake that” in a snarky like tone. After a while and still no new wrap, I asked if it were going to be coming shortly. I was told that my order was pushed to the end behind all other order that were currently there. When the food did come out, the plate was practically slammed on the table and it didn’t come out until the rest of the party was already finished with their food. I asked for a box since everyone else was done eating and I wasn’t going to make them wait for me. I was answered with extreme attitude. As we were leaving, we were sarcastically greeted with “hope you enjoyed your food” by the cooking staff, and it was 100% directed towards me to the point that I don’t feel comfortable eating it anymore. There will never be enough good I can say about this place but let me start here:

What a lovely little bar! The owners did a FABULOUS job sprucing up the place. We attended their soft opening and they did a phenomenal job. Of course, there were a few hitches and bumps, but that is to be expected with every new restaurant opening. We sat at the bar, and LADIES, there are PURSE HOOKS. The hooks are located directly in front of you (under the bar, out of sight) so you have the comfort of not having to worry about anything going missing while you enjoy a cold beer and good food. Now that I mention food... GET. THE. MOZZARELLA. STICKS. Oh LAWD are they good! Fried to perfection. They also have the best potato salad I have ever had in my 26 years of existing (my compliments to the chef!). For our main course, my husband had a burger and I had the lovely International Falls salad without chicken (because I chose a terrible time to become vegetarian, HA!). The salad was light with the perfect mix of fruits and walnuts. The only gripe I had was a waitress walking around, smacking her gum (open mouthed, not a care in the world) but that was more of a "personal" thing of mine. After a 10 mile bicycle ride on the Great River Ridge State Trail arriving in Elgin we decided to stop for lunch. The Blacktop Bar and Grill is mere steps located right on Main Street. Established in 2020, this family-owned and operated bar offers a place to eat, meet and greet locals with the usual fare of burgers, starters, salads, baskets and skillets, sandwiches and wraps. Open floor concept with the typical L shape bar, tables and chairs, a few flat screen TVs and an open window from the kitchen for food orders. After receiving our drinks and menus we soon ordered and being the place was nearly empty our order was soon for pickup. Placed on the open window and signaled by the chef with the dinging of the bell our Bacon Chicken Ranch Wrap and International Falls Salad sat. Our inattentive waitress remained at the bar conversing with the bartender and the two remaining patrons seated there. After a short time, one of our party got up and getting the attention of the waitress we received our food. Our wrap had a decent amount of chunky crispy chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato and Ranch dressing wrapped in a tortilla. All wraps, sandwiches and burgers come à la cart and sides come at a cost.
