Walking into a place with animal heads on the walls and a special called "Carnivore Burger" with my vegan roommate could have been awkward, but the cozy atmosphere, friendly service, and truly delicious food quickly made us feel at home. I'm glad the hunting show on tv was behind my friend's head as she ate her fried mushrooms and sweet potato fries (which were amazing, and I enjoyed my Carnivore Burger with them). If you wear a mask in there, expect the row of maskless locals at the beautiful bar to reassure you that "you don't need to wear that here." We took a table in the back. The waitress wasn't wearing a mask, but my friend and I are vaccinated and the waitress looked the epitome of health, so I wasn't too worried. Even though we were obviously driving through from out of town, we felt welcome. I saw a few dads bring their polite and well-dressed "tween" girls in for ice cream after school. It seems a really friendly local place. We were there around 3pm, so there were plenty of tables, but I bet it's quite popular at other times. Ladies, the (nicely clean) bathroom door sticks, but if you yank it hard enough you'll get...

There is nothing about this place that says anything worth more than 1 stars. The food is some of the worst I have ever had. You would be better off getting a microwaveable hamburger from the gas station. The service is ok cause that’s all the staff has to work with. With an owner that doesn’t give a care. The place is old and dingy. No know one in who knows how long has ever put a cleaning towel to anything in there other than the bar top. If owner and or management aren’t will to do a little cleaning in the bar I’m sure cleaning hasn’t been done in the kitchen for at least that long or more. This place is for sale. I can see the potential this place could have on a small community like Elbert. But for how much of a dump it looks like. I wouldn’t pay...

We had an amazing experience at South 40 Bar and Grill! From the moment we walked in, the staff went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcome and comfortable. The service was truly exceptional—friendly, attentive, and genuinely caring about our experience.

The drink menu was a real standout, offering unique and creative choices that you won’t find anywhere else in the area. Each cocktail was delicious and clearly crafted with care. The food was just as impressive—everything we tried was fresh, flavorful, and absolutely fantastic. South 40 offers a dining experience that’s truly one of a kind in the area.

Highly recommend if you’re looking for great service, unique drinks, and...

I moved down to Elbert from Denver. So, I wasn’t sure how’d this place would stack up, but let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised. The food is absolutely AMAZING, and the staff is more friendly then any place I’ve ever been. The South 40 has become my favorite spot. All the food is great, but my favorites are the Elk Sausage, wings and the Ruben Sandwich with Fries. If you’re having a sweet tooth, I highly recommend the Purgatory Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream. 🤤 Regardless of what you choose to eat or snack on, you will NOT be disappointed. Highly suggest checking it out!!
