Make this institution part of your routine. Sometimes you need to ride the canyon & shake off the the city slake. This is exactly what the good doctor recommends for both front and back patio service. Ruth started a dining institution that has survived as an institution going on a century. From the easy-on easy- off roadside entrance to the auspucious beginnings as a single railroad dining car still intact, spotless and historical. The vast tiered back patio under sprawling mature creekside shade trees is where you'll take in the rustle of wilding life all around. Who can't feel layer upon layer of city life just sheddng away, turning to an ease of fantastico comfort food meant to sustain & savor whether ite the first or last bite. It's the kind of place having you ask when you'll return & how long you can stay. I sat down to the freebie of a mountainous home cooked biscuit with honey & strawberry jam. My guest & I were eagerly treated to a second serving on the house just for asking. That alone could make a wonderful snack with coffee & ice cream. I've eaten a lot of chicken quesadilla in my time. Yet this quesadilla was different. The added mushrooms filled out the tortilla layered goodness - making it taller in a way that won't leave you feeling too bloated even if you forget to pace yourself! Let's just call that shorthand meaning more than adequate proportions. A pitcher of local beer translates into about 4-16 oz glasses for $16.00. The good fortune if dining here is a gold panning story giving up loads of hidden foodie gems & thirst quenching refresh from a golden tap. What good fortune it is to be here. **here's a real dining tip, people** If you ever go out to eat and you feel that whatever dish or plate you ordered isn't enough food -- go ahead and order an additional something else from the menu. Never be afraid to have two or three plates of food in front of you even if you're only going to eat half a plate, two plates and just take the rest home! Remember to make the dining experience your own.

Canyon diners are the best thing in the world, and Ruth’s is no exception. Before the world fell into darkness my company would take us here in the fall for breakfast, and every time it was amazing. They would give us the patio and have heaters out for us since it was starting to get cold. I really miss it. I’ve also eaten here without my company paying for it quite a few times, but it is harder to justify waiting in a line for Sunday brunch, because everyone else had the same idea and also wanted to sleep in and then get brunch here. Also, there is just something about free food that makes it taste even better. Today I want to Ruth’s, because my coworkers and I hadn’t seen each other in person in over a year, and it was time, and this was the obvious choice. The country fried steak benedict is apparently the thing to get according to my coworker that got it, but I got the biscuits and gravy and couldn’t even finish it because it was so much food. Next time I’m getting that benedict though. Also, random story that just popped into my mind. One of the execs where I work likes to shoot half and half for some reason, and when we go to Ruth’s he gets all of the left over things of half and half, and just goes to town on them. It is the weirdest thing I have ever witnessed at a canyon diner in salt lake in my life. Truly disturbing. Anyway, eat here. It is definitely worth every minute you will wait in line for a table.

Disappointed. Went here for a birthday breakfast with 10 adults and four kids (3 in high chairs) because we had heard good things. Drove from Utah county and arrived when they opened at 8am. There was a group of 12 ahead of us and another group of 4 that said they had 10. Because these two groups took the big tables, they told us it would be an hour wait unless we took separate tables. We told them we could separate. The put us on three tables next to each other that sit 4 people each in the lower section. We waited for 10 minutes then the waitress came and asked how we were paying, we said one check. She said that each table was in a different section and each table would have to pay separate so they would have to swipe the card for each table. We said that was fine and she left. Another 10 minutes and they came to take our order and we told them we didn’t have any menus and still needed 3 high chairs. They said we couldn’t put high chairs on the end of the tables because they needed room to walk. So, two of us moved to a two person table on the upper trolly car level so we could get two high chairs that wouldn’t be in the aisle (The space between tables for walking in the trolley car is less than the space would be between the high chair and the tables in the lower level). We finally ordered at 8:40. The other 6 people in the party of 10 arrived at this time (I felt we should have got their table since we were all there and needed it and they weren’t all there and just took up space waiting for the rest of there party). Three people ordered the cinnamon roll French toast and all three didn’t eat it because it was stale and tasted bad. One person got a Benedict and the hollandaise sauce was tasteless. The other 7 breakfasts were good with one exception - the carne con papas special was good but I bit into a piece of wood hidden in the potatoes (see photo). First and last time going here.

Not only is the setting beautiful around this place, but the food was delicious. We went for breakfast. When the server brought us to our table we already had warm homemade rolls ready at the table and waters as well. Our server was great! Answered any questions we had and was super patient with our larger party size. I ordered the chicken fried steak and it’s by far the best chicken fried steak I’ve had at a restaurant. The gravy was perfect and a great compliment to the steak. The eggs were fantastic as well. I typically don’t like hashbrowns but they had a seasoning on these that added a boost of flavor that made them super enjoyable. The bacon was very nicely cooked at had a lot of flavor. I’ve found places tend to charge around $3 for bacon but the bacon they use is cheap and not cooked well. That’s not the case here. My wife got the French toast breakfast combo. The French toast was delicious. One of my favorite things about this place outside of the view of the mountains is the raspberry jam. It’s SO SO SO delicious. They sell it in a jar if you want it. It tasted amazing on the rolls with butter. The hot chocolate was also delicious. It has a lot of whipped cream on it. Worth the $3.99 if you’re into hot chocolate. Overall I’d highly recommend this place as a top spot in salt lake for breakfast if you can get it. You’re going to want to make a reservation though. It fills up fast.

Our server, Mac, was a delight. Kind, considerate, and fun. I enjoyed the big biscuits they bring when you're seated. We ordered the sunrise spuds with a side of eggs, and the pulled pork Benedict with the Spanish rice side. I do think the eggs on the spuds dish really made it for me but I appreciate that they have it default as a veg option and the menu states it can be requested vegan as well! The pulled pork was very good; soft and moist, the Spanish rice was a waste; dry and uninspired. Both were big dishes, we each took home at least another meal. Nothing special to say about the coffee, but I appreciate that they stock raw sugar. The bathrooms were very tidy. I can imagine that accessibility could be a struggle for some, numerous steps and small turns around the layout. They have some padded seating options inside but primarily hard wood chairs, out on the patio only the metal mesh. I'm glad we waited on seating outside, and were able to take our time, the patio was heaven today. The ambiance is lovely throughout, a mix of casual and classy that I really enjoy. the fresh mountain air open eating is unbeatable. I am sad that they only have styrofoam to-go containers, I hope they'll reconsider something more sustainable. The food is good and our service was excellent, the location is what kicks everywhere else in the pants.
