DownRiver Ice Cream — Restaurant in Essex

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the previous review. I used to go crazy over Down River ice cream, but sadly this season is different. Along with the expansion of another store, the quality seems to have dropped - as if they're shaving off ingredients for the bottom line. My favorite ice cream is Monkey's Uncle. First, they were out twice; then last week the banana ice cream seemed less natural (more yellow and flavored) and my favorite ingredient, huge chunks of real Reese's cups, had been replaced by the mini peanut butter cups you find in any name-brand ice cream. My daughter's Kung Fu grasshopper was also missing big Oreo chunks. A friend reported her fave Salty C was missing the pretzels. They've also posted that they've removed ingredients (e.g. gluten-free brownies) from a couple of flavors because of cost. To top it off, recently on a warm day we witnessed them transporting their ice cream in a car (no freezer truck). What's happening???!! - Sad and...

Really good ice cream. Pretty good selection that isn't inundated with flavors that are the same but different. Like chocolate peanut butter cup vs. peanut butter chocolate chip. The atmosphere is half of the adventure there. Crashed out back on a lawn chair, birds chirping, beautiful marsh scenery and your favorite flavor ice cream gently rolling down your grocery hole. Ahhhhhhh. Breath it all in. My one and a half beefs with the place. PORTIONS. Even if you order a large they're using a teaspoon to scoop the ice cream. Maybe they don't want me suffering for the sin of gluttony but come on man!!! And my half beef is the new signage. On one hand it's way more classy than the old one. With little hangable signs letting you know what's on tap but now the descriptions are gone. And the names for the ice cream aren't generic. There's no mint chocolate chip on the menu. It's more like Green Cosmic Sky Leprechaun Conspiracy Tribute. But still. Absolutely...

I'm lucky enough to be able to Downriver go at least once a week and love the ice cream here, as a matter of fact my gal pals & I just left . I had Bobby's Pistachio and it's LOADED with pistachio's! Last weekend we also went, same group...I ordered mint chocolate chip & Jerry Cherry & my other friend also ordered Jerry Cherry. Sadly the server didn't rinse the ice cream scoop & our Jerry Cherry tasted like Mint Chocolate Chip, not an enjoyable tsste sensation. It won't keep me from going back because this has never happened before & hoping after this will never happen again. Keep making your fabulous ice cream & rinse...
