I had an excellent dinner at The Peaks. It was easy for me to make a reservation online while I was at my lodge down the road some. When we got there, our table was ready and was next to some windows looking out over the forest and mountains. It was an amazing view, we were happy to get such a good table, I've included pictures. We ordered the filet and the acorn squash, then had the mix berry pie for desert with General Sherman IPA.
The side salads were made with spinach, grape tomatoes, shredded carrot and sliced cucumber. The salads were cold and fresh, the spinach was unblemished. After a long day on the trails, they tasted great and we scarfed them down.
The filet mignon was ordered rare and came out medium rare. The flavor was excellent and I was very happy with the selection. The cherry demi-glace was rich, and dark with a slight red tinge, beautiful and tasty. The side broccoli was a touch overcooked for my taste, but was not mush, seasoned well and after the hiking the veg was welcome.
The acorn squash was cooked thoroughly, not tough or hurried. It was filled with quinoa and goat cheese. This item was awesome!
We split the squash and the steak and found the combination to be tasty and feel like it satisfied my body's nutritional needs. I was very happy with sharing the two dishes.
Last out was the mixed berry pie. The crust was flaky and buttery, delicious. The filling was sweet and had strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, perhaps another berry too. I got it a la mode and loved my desert choice. The pie was warm and the ice cream was cold, it was beautifully presented.
The service was spectacular, our server was timely, helpful and moved the dinner along. He was kind, friendly and and knew the area. He did an excellent job.
Other reviews mention the expense, but I didnt find the prices to be high, especially for a restaurant with a view at the top of a beautiful national park. I found the service quality, and view to be far above my expectation for our remote location. Great job The Peaks!!! We will be sure to stop by next time we are in Sequoia...
Read moreVery disappointed with our overall experience. There were 3 of us and we had reservations. We were seated promptly, and the hostess went out of her way to find a table with a view. We appreciated her very much. After a short wait our waitress, Christina came to out table, introduced herself and took our drink orders. We asked to also put in an app order first, which she took. She brought our drinks, and shortly thereafter our app. We ordered, and the food came after not too long a wait. One of us had the chili and said it was good with lots of spice and beef. Two of us had the rib eye steaks with mashed potatoes and carrots. The steaks were very thin. I asked to have it cooked med rare and I don't know how they could have done that. My husband ordered medium and it looked the same as mine. They had nice seasoning on them, but we're not blackened in the least. Just a grayish color. Unappealing. The waitress briefly stopped by about halfway through our meal, asking only one member of our group if everything was fine. Our dining partner said yes, as she liked her chili, but Christina said "Good" and hurried away. After a long wait, Christina came back, dishes still. In front of us, and asked we wanted our check. We said no, that we wanted dessert. She took, our orders, leaving our dishes on the table. After quite awhile, another server delivered our desserts to our still un cleaned table. I asked her to please send someone e to learn the table, which she finally did. After another wait I motioning for our check. Very dissapointed. We do...
Read moreIn the beautiful Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park, there remains only one sit-down restaurant, making this by default the best around.
Dining is casual. Enter through the lodge and join the queue. Americans will refer to this as "Getting in line" but expect it to meander through the lobby. At supper time the wait was easily 30 minutes or longer.
Order at the bar, then seat yourself in the dining room or on the deck. The view from the dining room is almost as good as the deck, but this is the Sierra Nevadas, so you should expect that.
The menu is limited, as is reasonable in this remote location, but the dishes themselves are very good. Personally, I consider their Trout Almondine (sic) to be some of the best, and accidentally talked half my party into ordering it. The duckling was also raved about. The baked acorn squash sounded a bit too exotic for some, but my wife ordered it and loved it so much she was barely willing to share a single taste.
There is a fair wine menu, plus beers. Nothing to get excited about, but reasonable for California. Soft drinks (Pepsi products) are available, but iced tea is not.
One last note, if you think you might want desserts, order up front. You will not want to go through the line again.
In a place where this is the only option, you expect high prices and mediocre-to-poor foods. The Peaks Grill is pricey at around $30 per plate without alcohol, but the food is excellent.
Seriously,...
