Like others, I was extremely disappointed when we lost Pizza 51. Then, I was ecstatic to learn Elbow was going to open a coffee, ice cream and donut shop. All three things that I am an aficionado of. However, I'm back to square one and sad that we lost Pizza 51 for this.
On opening day, I went and got a twist soft serve. This was probably the only thing that I actually enjoyed there and kept it from being a one star.
Next, I decided to try the coffee. I had high expectations given that they were claiming to have an excellent coffee program. I got an oat milk latte. The milk wasn't frothed properly and ended up being way too bubbly rather than creamy. Another red flag is that there was no latte art. Any respectable barista would have gained this skill by now. But, it's apparent that the baristas there are not experienced at all. Espresso Viale or The Filling Station are proper coffee shops nearby that are much better.
The next day, we tried the donuts. I got there right at the open and got one of each donut. Again, we were let down. The donuts were overly sweet and glazed. Even my 5 year old noted that there was too much glaze and she ended up not eating the rest. They were not fluffy nor soft and chewy like a proper donut. I'll stick to the usual suspects for a good donut (Fluffy Fresh, Lamar's, Hana's).
Finally, a week later, I decided to try the actual ice cream and was left underwhelmed yet again. The flavors were good, but the serving sizes were jaw dropping. I got kid scoops for my kids and couldn't believe how small they were. They were basically finished in three bites. I got a single scoop and this also was surprisingly small. We have been to ice cream shops far and near and any gourmet, high end ice cream shop has always had generous servings. I don't know if this is their intention or just lack of training. However, I think I'll continue heading on over to Betty Rae's or even Russell Stover for our ice cream fix.
I suppose my expectations were high coming in. However, I didn't expect to be so let down. Again, these are three foods/drinks that I'm passionate about and I was let down by all three. I wish this place would have satisfied those three, but I guess I'll have to keep going further out for my fixes; and also...

Prices aren't awesome, as I think your paying for the name a little. If they weren't $3 a pop I think it's worth a 4th star. At the end of the day, not that different from the other options in town in terms of quality.
Only been there once thus far, but here's my take on the donuts.
Classic raised: meh. Fluffy fresh is light years beyond them.
Filled: got the apricot, filling was good. Not too sweet like some.
Old fashioned: one of my two favorite donut styles. Pretty good. Weren't as 'open' as you see elsewhere. Lacked a bit of a crust as well. The lemon could have been more lemony. Cherry and maple iced versions were good, but would be better if the aforementioned criticisms were addressed.
Fritters: fritters from John's space age were still better on day 3 than any other fritter I've had in KC since then. The fritter I had today was good; better than the others I've had as of late, but still no John's space age. The Apple filling is definitely nice, but it's a little dense and the glaze is a tad heavy.
I wonder if the fryer should be set higher, or maybe they just need...
Read moreWent in this morning for coffee and breakfast burritos. They gave us the wrong food items. We went back in and asked for the correct item (bacon and egg burrito). They gave us a burrito, but when we got home we realized it was a veggie burrito. I called and asked for a refund after not getting our item twice —the owner answered the call and said “well did you get food?” I explained that while I got food, my partner was not going to eat a corn and carrot burrito when he paid for one he with items he actually likes. He again said “so you did get food though.” I again explained that I did not get the food I paid for and should therefore get a refund. He hung up the phone on me. When I called back, I talked to one of the workers who was very nice and offered a refund. However, I won’t be giving any more money to an establishment where the owner hangs up on their customers and doesn’t care if they get the food they pay for or not. I was just in there 3 days ago and paid $40 for ice cream. I come in frequently and spend plenty of money here, but I now know they don’t...
