Eaten there 6 times since they opened. Ate there last, last sun in August'15.
Pros: The coffee is tasty. The help has always treated us very well Nicely appointed Great presentation.
Cons Last meal, soapy aftertaste to the otherwise tasty coffee. We were first guests in, Guess I got the bad first pot.
The regular breakfast faire is unremarkable at best. In a region that rightfully prides itself in a lot of high quality locally sourced foods, I don't know where they get their eggs, But I'm guessing wallmart. Bright yellow yolks in the peak of summer mean layers that have never seen the sunlight in their lives.
It might be a regional thing, but 'eggs over medium' to me means the whites are cooked, and yes, I've cooked short order eggs to order professionally before, I know the nature of the work. But never have I gotten proper eggs over medium in central pa from anyone, so I can't really fault the naked egg for serving 'easy' to a 'medium' order. Does make me wonder what easy would be like, raw in a cup? Anyway: Home fries cold on the plate. Bacon cold on the plate. Further the bacon looked exactly like bacon I cook after I overcook it accidentally, don't eat it, but toss in the fridge for a few days, then warm it up to make a sandwich or something. IE, I doubt it was freshly cooked.
I've had their pancakes a few times, and they are unremarkable, but certainly okay. Bit steep pricewise, but given the appearance of the place, the quality of the presentation, the nature of the servers, a bit steep is justified. What is not justified is serving rather expensive pancakes in a region that again, prides itself rightfully on very high quality locally produced maple syrup, with cheap maple flavored goop, probably sysco industrial syrup facsimile. that's just wrong.
Since we've had pretty much the same experience, regardless of how eggs are ordered, over, poached, scrambled, always undercooked, every time we've been there, I presume that's just how it is. Maybe it's different later in the day, as we have just gone for breakfast, and maybe they don't care about folks who order simple (if expensive) eggs, potatoes, toast and maybe some meat breakfasts or pancake breakfasts. Maybe they do a better job on their more lavish faire. I don't know. It's a mystery how they get voted up so well. The food isn't the reason. the food is just not good. it's cheap industrial stuff sold at artisanal prices. One star for quality of the presentation One star for the staff, but the food just...
Read moreLots of people have suggested this place, but it's not a place I would suggest, nor would I visit it again. I had the distinct unprivilege of being seated by the door and it was absolutely freezing the whole time with and extra burst of freezing every time the door opened again for a guest entering or exiting. I had to wear my jacket the whole time and wish I had brought a heavier jacket. This is a small place and there is a lot of seating by the door so lots of tables were in the freezing zone. I'd suggest a breezeway if they are going to have winter hours or wanting to have returning guests during that time.
As far as the food goes, it was, well, mixed. I had a meat lovers omelet and it was actually pretty good. The bacon was really good as was the sausage that was used. My complaint with the food is the sides. The toast came out cold and stale like it was toast left over from yesterday and warmed up at some point during the night and then left out on the cold counter while my food was made. I would have asked for no toast instead had I known it was going to be that bad. It would have saved the wait staff the extra time bringing me the toast and then taking the toast, minus one bite, back to the kitchen garbage at the end of the meal. The breakfast potato options are home fries or tater tots. I went with the home fries and I regret that decision as well. The home fries were the little potato shaves that were maybe Hungry Jack brand reconstituted, dehydrated potatoes. They were cooked on a dry griddle and came out barely cooked. They had a slight brown to them on the bottom from where they were flopped onto the grill and forgotten about, but not good in any way. They weren't cooked in butter and had no seasoning or taste at all. They were basically what you'd expect sadness to taste like.
This isn't a place I would bring my family to when they're in town visiting and I wouldn't go back when I'm looking for a breakfast place to go with friends. I'll keep looking for a favorite breakfast place in town, but The Naked Egg is at the bottom...
Read moreI am disappointed to have to write this review as the food was good and I really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere and service was the absolute worst I’ve ever had. Everyone seemed so judgy, especially the chef. I ordered the hash bowl with an extra egg, the server asked if I wanted the extra scrambled as well and I thought doing 1 scrambled and 1 over easy would be good (since I was having a hard time choosing) and the server said that’d be fine. A few minutes later I heard the chef go “are you sure she wanted a scrambled and an over easy? That’s the most work intensive meal I’ve had in a while” and continue to berate and make fun of my order for the next few minutes. I heard him make jokes about ordering a poached egg and things of that nature, I felt like I was being bullied. At the end the server tried to make up for it by asking about my firefighter shirt and I responded saying that yes I am a firefighter and EMT. His response was “You’re probably desensitized then? Wow” … What a weird thing to say to a total stranger.
To say I was uncomfortable is an understatement and if I had cash on me to leave for the drinks I would have got up and left. Totally unnecessary and very unprofessional. Protip: the next time you belittle a customer, make sure they aren’t in earshot. I...
