We came in late, but the owner's daughter was very friendly and showed us to our booth. We were given our menus, and our drinks came out quickly.
I'm an egg roll guy, a major fan. My heart did a little jump when I read the description in their menu. They make their own dough. I had to order one. My husband ordered kung po beef. I ordered empress chicken.
We got into a conversation with a very nice couple two tables over as our food arrived. Unfortunately, it lasted halfway through my chicken, but no biggie. I love good conversation as much as I love good food. We were blessed with both!
Again, I'm an egg roll guy. This one was very good. That dough they make? It's astonishingly crispy. The filling was full of well-seasoned pork. I really enjoyed it, even if it was a bit greasy.
The empress chicken was full of veggies and peanuts. I ordered it medium spicy. It had a nice amount of heat, not painful. Warm. The chicken was tender, not rubbery. The brown sauce was a bit too sweet, but it did well marrying the dish to the white rice. My husband's kung po was similarly a bit sweet, but there was a nice hint of Hoisin sauce to it.
Even though we showed up a half hour before closing time, we didn't feel rushed.
Now to the interior. It is dated, and a bit dingy. I noticed some dust and cobwebs around some of the fixtures. It needs a deep cleaning. If you want to eat in a sterile environment, this is not the place for you. On the other hand, for us this was more like visiting a family table, in their home. Trust me when I tell you if you invite me over to share a meal, I won't be noticing whether or not your ceilings are free of some dust.
For us, this is a place we'll visit again, especially because the first page of their menu is Vietnamese food. Phó and spring rolls?...
Read moreJust moved to the area, and looking for a good and convenient Asian restaurant. This one is on my way home so I figured I'd try it first. Oh boy... This was the WORST food (Chinese or otherwise!) I have ever tasted in my life. I am not exaggerating. This was my first time ordering, so I ordered a lot of different dishes to take home to see which ones we'd like to get again.... NONE of them were even edible. The egg rolls were so greasy, that once removed from the bag, there was at least 1 cm of oil on the bottom of the bag. The spare ribs were so disgusting- they tasted like they had gone bad already. The pork in the dumplings also tasted like it had turned and should have been thrown out. And don't even get me started on the entrees- the lo mein was bland, undercooked.. and of course, VERY very greasy. The vegetable fried rice was undercooked, greasy, and only had a few vegetables in it. The entrees were in a vague mystery brown "gravy" that had no spice, just a salty flavor (the dishes were supposed to be "Hunan" and "Szechwan"). The most upsetting thing of all was the OIL- it tasted way too old, like they never, ever throw it away... and fry lots of different meats in it (which is a no-no). Of course, I don't know... and I'm not going to go back to find out. We had to basically throw away $40 worth of food. I drive past this place every day and now I know why I NEVER see cars parked in its parking lot. How is this place still open? It is beyond me how anyone could give this place a positive review. I'm by no means a foodie but I believe this food is actually UNSAFE TO EAT. Since I got carryout, I didn't see the restrooms or the back of the restaurant- but the place looked pretty dirty and unkempt. I am just in awe of how bad...
Read moreOur first time there a few months ago was fine, nothing special but decent. I enjoyed my bite of the Mu Shu Pork my husband ordered and even helped him eat some of the leftovers, so when we recently went back, I ordered it. Unfortunately, our 2nd time there was a completely different experience. The egg rolls were in a big puddle of grease on the plate and dripped grease when we bit into them, and the Mu Shu pork I ordered was terrible. A little of the distinct and pronounced Mu Shu flavor goes a long way, but, rather than enough of the flavor blended in to enjoy, the sauce had been ladled over the pancake like gravy and was completely overwhelming — even after scraping off as much of the sauce as I could. Also, there was almost no meat in it. I choked down a few bites but gave up after I started feeling sick. I don’t know if they have a new cook, but I can understand why we were the only diners there this time. Sorry, but I just can’t...
