The EVP Coffee Shop in Fitchburg rebranded itself several years ago as the Oasis Café to highlight a growing number of food options provided by this location. While it still offers a full arsenal of EVP-powered coffee drinks, this café also offers a variety of well-composed sandwiches and, are you sitting down, pelmeni of Paul's Pelmeni fame.
Oasis has maintained it coffeehouse roots, there are plenty of comfortable seating options, generally occupied with young professionals tapping away on their phones or laptops. A set of large windows flood the interior with natural light and there is a small outdoor seating area for those seeking an al fresco experience. The staff I have interacted with is top notch, über-friendly and incredibly accommodating.
The menu offers a variety of options. In the morning, Oasis serves up breakfast burritos and breakfast sandwiches. From 11 am to 3 pm, the full sandwich menu is available. During my last visit, I enjoyed their roast beef and provolone offering ($8.25) with a cup of the tomato basil soup ($2). The fact this sandwich came with a healthy does of caramelized onions, pretty much assures my review will carry at least a four star rating. The horseradish sauce needed more of an accent and less of a major flavor note. It just overpowered the subtle flavors of the roast beef and provolone. While I appreciated the fresh sourdough baguette, the crust provided too much resistance with each bite. As I tried to bite off a piece, the sandwich contents would fall out the other side. The roast beef also needed a pinch of salt to accentuate the beef flavors.
I felt the dairy element of the soup muted the fresh tomato flavor. The optional Gorgonzola cheese added a needed flavor boost since the fresh basil was applied sparingly.
The other food option is Paul's pelmeni, which has a well-deserved cult following in Madison. While I could wax poetically about this delicacy, the best thing you could do is order a bowl and experience the awesomeness first hand.
Since Oasis Café is close to my office, it will definitely become a frequent lunchtime...
Read moreit was my first time here and it was a HORRIBLE experience. I was given a bacon sandwich instead of sausage, no big deal I just went inside to switch it out. I told the cashier girl and she opened up the sandwich with her bare hands and looks at it. She then brings it to the back where they tried to just throw sausage on it after she just touched it with her bare hands. I wanted a whole new sandwich as there was no reason she needed to touch the current one with her hands. She wasn’t kitchen staff she was at the register, that is just gross. Also, the guy with the long black hair and glasses was just rude. Being it was my first time I had a few questions about the menu. I asked if they had crepes as it is listed online during the weekends and he said “no.” I asked what the tropical green tea was and he answered “just tropical tea”. I asked if they had any English muffins, the cashier answered yes, the guy said no. He acted as though he was bothered by anything I asked. They were out of a lot of stuff on the menu, and customer service was horrible. The time wait for the breakfast was not worth it as it tasted like one you make at home. 0/10 would recommend and I will...
Read moreI visited a friend from out of town and had the misfortune of stopping here. Do you ever go to a place once and it disappoints you, but it's convenient so you go back despite your misgivings and then are disappointed in yourself? That's this place.
The first time I was brusquely served a plain iced coffee whose taste was reminiscent of what I imagine water that you ashed a cigarette into, forgot about, then took a sip, and then you were like "BLAWGH!!!" Would taste like... except in this case it was actually iced coffee that I unfortunately paid for.
The person who poured it appeared to be an adult mall goth with dyed black hair, and she seemed both stressed and irritated with me for being there....absurdly, I was one of two customers in the place at that moment.
A few months ago I tried a simple hot black coffee which had a bizarre hormel chili like aftertaste. This was served by a man with dark hair who, before I ordered, was going on a lengthy political diatribe and I had to awkwardly stand there before he noticed me.
I wouldn't...
