We decided to try RJ's Café / New England Seafood this afternoon at 17753 Toledo Blade Blvd, Port Charlotte. We were pleasantly surprised and will definitely be back. We were greeted as soon as we came through the door and given menus and a few minutes to look around. The place was clean and warm and I noticed the whole place had license plates on the walls from Rhode Island and New Hampshire. It was quite unique and homey. In the corner there was an older gentleman who started playing guitar and singing songs that both my wife and I knew. He was pretty good and made us feel welcome right away. We were not too hungry so my wife ordered the Italian Stromboli and I ordered the Italian sub heated. When the food came it was nice and hot and looked great. My wife really enjoyed her Stromboli and said she was very happy with it. It was very tasty. My Italian sub was just the perfect size and was heated so the cheese melted and the bun was nice and crisp on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. You could tell that the bread was fresh. Next time we come we will be prepared and will have a better appetite. We will be back for sure as we both want to try some of their seafood. The prices are reasonable and the menu looks good. So come hungry and with some spare cash for the gentleman singer, who was there when we visited on a Friday afternoon after 4:00 PM. You should check it out. It is a good little place for a quiet meal.

The food was delicious. Let me say before you read my review. It was not their fault they had only one cook trying to keep up with all the cooking from what the waitresses were saying. They can't find any cooks . So if you want a job they desperately need cooks . We went in around 6:30 . But we will not go on fri any where around that time again . They were slammed not only with the indoor restaurant seating but the call in orders were outrageous so so many of them and all waiting at least 1and a half hours to get them . As well as the indoor restaurant guests. But everyone was waiting and not complaining the food is that good. I believe right now that they have no help in The kitchen it's best to order to go. Excellent food . Great prices. Still go at lunch time and on other days maybe earlier. And you that want a job cooking I'm sure they will hire you even if they have to train you . They need, need help. Get on in there.

We saw the sign while returning from the beach and had to stop. We were so happy we did. My son got, of all things, the Thanksgiving Shepards Pie. It had to weigh 4-5 lbs, and he crushed it. It was so good, he said. My wife tried the meatballs, and they were OK. I had the clam roll and was in New England bliss. Perfectly cooked, plump, and sweet. Excellent. My son and I started with the New England Chowder, which was creamy rich and a clam in almost every bite. My wife tried the Lobster Bisque, and it was so rich and wonderful that I had to steal a few bites. Spamoni cake to go was a nice treat later. We will be back!!

When you miss the East coast food/but not the East coast attitude! Small, Rhode Island style food diner. I was really excited to write a raving review! The food was amazing, but variations from the menu are not welcome here! We ordered the veggie grilled cheese which is accompanied with, zucchini, summer squash, caramelized onions on focaccia bread, for, $7.49. The lobster grilled cheese comes with, lobster leg meat, American cheese, on white bread for, $10.99. We asked if we could add the lobster leg meat (leg meat/spread) which is the lobster grilled cheese to the veggie grilled cheese. This was NOT, the lobster roll ($16.99) quality claw meat. Our waitress stated we would probably get charged for a lobster roll, then she said, it was not lobster roll meat, so there would probably just be an up charge on the lobster grilled cheese. We were thinking add a few dollars to the lobster grilled cheese ($10.99) to compensate for the focaccia bread and veggies, not the cost of the sandwich doubled! We were charged, $16.99 for small, but delicious (dill pickle length) grilled cheese sandwiches, not lobster roll, claw meat/nor the quantity of lobster roll. We received our bill and after questioning the price we were charged, a older large man I can only assume was the owner came over. He was really rude and confrontational telling us that we ordered two sandwiches and wanted one price! He said he gave us, $7.49 of vegetables. Hate to tell you if you're getting charged that much they would be the entire vegetable AND organic. I hardly doubt a few slices total of, squash, zucchini, and caramelized onions are, $7.49. $16.99 for the deal of the day! He said next time we need to order off the menu! I would say I wondered how he stayed in business, based on his attitude, it is clear, overcharging is the name of his game. Sandwich was good, the owner's customer service was not! I would have absolutely liked to support local and return, however, based on the customer service received by this establishment I would never visit again! FYI there is a 3% up charge on using a...

Always on the lookout for good New England Seafood we stopped in for dinner. Run ! Do NOT go in this place !! We shared a bowl of clam chowder, that was more the size of a cup. My 1st thought was "did we order potato soup ? It tasted good, but would have been better with more than a few tiny clams. 2 lobster rolls. His cold, mine Hot-with drawn butter on the side. Mine arrived in butter... soaked .... I tried the top claw (medium in size ) NO taste and way overcooked. Hoping it was just a fluke, I tried another claw.. it was worse than the 1st. I looked in the roll & the remaining lobster was drowning in a pool of soggy bun. Being hungry, I ate half the cole slaw & gave up. The waitress gave us our check & we were charged the full price ! I mentioned it & was told because I ate 2 claws ! Seriously ?!? I asked for butter on the side, not on it. It was overcooked ! 3 . So overcooked it was tasteless .

I did not ask for a refund, but even a discounted charge would have done wonders for our 1st impression. This owner needs serious training in how to treat customers. We learned that not every New Englander knows how to cook seafood tonight. Never will we return again. We were hoping to find seafood closer to home. We'll go back to Venice & Burgundy Square Cafe. That Mainer knows how to cook AND treat...
