This place does NOT seem to be disability friendly, unfortunately. I cannot share my experience at the location, because I didn't even get that far! I'm on oxygen 24/7 due to severe lung disease. I generally try not to let it stop me or slow me down too much and I regularly camp, fish and Hunt, etc. I do need to be wearing my oxygen at all times; therefore, I either need electricity to be able to plug into my camper to use my large concentrator while in the camper, as well as charging my portable oxygen concentrator, or I have to run a generator while in the camper, to include overnight. I understand that it can annoy others to hear my generator, especially at night. I'm not a bad neighbor and do my best to be considerate! I don't ask to be next to tents, where the noise really does bother others. But for those inside RVs it's different in certain circumstances.

The sites with electricity are booked for the time I'll be in Colorado, after my grandson is born end of May and before I have to be back in Oklahoma to take my husband for eye surgery. I called and spoke with a young lady and explained my situation. She placed me on hold to speak with the owners and when she came back, informed me that they would not accommodate me in the campground area if I needed to run my generator after quiet hours, but that I could stay at their group location across the road. I asked if the group location had bathrooms close by and she said no. I asked how far the bathrooms are and she said about a 5 minute walk. Might not seem far for a perfectly healthy individual who can breathe normally, but for someone with lung disease, on oxygen and coming from a low elevation of 1,900 ft to Colorado's high elevation, let me just say, that it is impossible. It's also impossible for my elderly Dad, who is mobility impaired and will be getting his 7th back surgery this summer. And needs either electricity or the generator for his CPAP machine.

I lived in Colorado for 44 of my 50 years and camped there my entire life. We were forced to move due to my worsening lung disease and the way the altitude affected me a year ago, unfortunately. I'm planning to make an annual camping trip to the Sand Dunes area when my grandchildren get out of school and had wanted to make The Sand Dunes Recreation and Pool my annual lodging destination, but since they don't seem to care to adequately accommodate their disabled patrons, I will NOT be patronizing this business. And will be informing all of my family members, especially in the SLV area.

I've never before had an issue with a campground being unwilling to adequately accommodate disabled patrons. Very...

This place is an absolute gem nestled in the heart of the San Luis Valley! From the moment you arrive, a truly relaxing atmosphere washes over you. It's more than just a recreation center; it's a genuine oasis catering to every member of the family. The expansive 50 x 100 family pool, consistently heated to a comfortable 98 degrees year-round, is a major highlight. The thoughtful enclosure provides welcome relief from the elements and conveniently covers the baby pool, making it perfect for even the littlest ones. For those seeking deeper relaxation, the 25-person therapy pool, maintained at a blissful 105-107 degrees, is an absolute treat. The convenience factor is also top-notch. The Mile Deep Grille, located right by the main pool, offers a delicious array of food, ensuring you don't have to venture far for a satisfying meal. Need a new swimsuit, sunscreen, or a souvenir? The on-site Gift Shop has you covered, along with a charming selection of jewelry and gifts, and even water toy rentals! Beyond the pools, the amenities cater perfectly to family fun. Picnic tables and charcoal grills invite outdoor meals (and outside food is welcome!), while the 24-foot kids' water slide, volleyball and basketball courts, and a sprawling grassy area with a creek promise hours of entertainment for the children. However, the true standout is The Greenhouse, an adults-only sanctuary. Stepping into this 10,000 square foot greenhouse is like entering another world. The four distinct soaking pools, each with varying temperatures, are incredibly soothing. The 10-person sauna adds another layer of relaxation, and the lush tropical gardens and patios create a truly tranquil ambiance. The upscale Small Plates Menu and the on-site beer and wine bar, "The Steel Box Bar," elevate the experience, making it a must-visit for adults seeking a peaceful escape. For those wishing to extend their stay, the on-site options are fantastic. RV spots, tent camping, three cozy small cabins, and a spacious family cabin offer convenient accommodation, all within easy walking distance of the pool facilities. The 24-hour laundry and shower house, along with the on-site dump station, are incredibly practical amenities. Finally, for those preferring an in-town experience, the seven short-term rental homes in Alamosa, offered by Sand Dunes Recreation, are a wonderful option, and the inclusion of free swimming during your entire stay is a fantastic perk. Overall, this recreation center offers an exceptional experience, blending family fun with genuine relaxation and rejuvenation in a truly scenic setting. It's a destination that caters to everyone and is well...

We tent camped and it was adequate. The customer service before and while we were there was fantastic. Everyone was friendly and attentive. They responded quickly to email questions and happily accommodated our request for being near the restrooms. The pool was kind of pricey (even with the camping discount) but was very fun.

There were several things I’d wished we’d known, however. None of these are deal breakers, but things people should be aware of before camping here. I think adults would probably have a great time here, but if you have young kids this is a challenging camping experience.

-There are two flushable toilets and showers for the entire campground. Since toilets are in the same rooms as the showers, it means that in the mornings they both always have lines. There are port a potties as well which we didn’t mind, but if you are wanting flushable toilets, be prepared to have trouble using them during peak shower times. They do also allow you access to the pool showers, but since that’s not open till later in the day it doesn’t help during this peak time. -All water is hot. So if you love hot showers, you will love it! (Hot showers at campgrounds can be hard to come by sometimes!). But our daughter is very sensitive to hot water and it was too much for her. The drinking water is also hot. We were still able to use it for cooking and coffee, but we wish we’d known so we could have planned differently for drinking water. -The quiet hours are not enforced. There were a lot of people playing loud music and talking loudly after 3 am. We think some may have been staff. The camping spots are close enough together that you can hear several spots around you. Again, not deal breakers, but if a quiet campground is important to you, this may be an issue. -The pool was fun! We had to get used to the hot water but my kids enjoyed swimming when it was cool out! Be aware that there aren’t lifeguards (which is very normal for a campground, just be aware no one is enforcing rules or monitoring kids left unsupervised by parents.

All that to say, given that camping can be limited around Great Sand Dunes, this wasn’t a bad experience for the price and I wouldn’t necessarily say we recommend against it. However, as people who tent camp with kids a lot, there were a few things we wished we’d been prepared for. (And to be fair, some of these things may be things I missed on their website, but things...
