The Chalet of Fox Lake — Restaurant in Fox Lake

After driving by the Chalet for 27 years on our way from Watertown, Wi to Berlin, WI, we made the Chalet our destination yesterday morning. We were greeted and seated in the cozy, warming dining room. My wife ordered a cheeseburger with chips; I, at the recommendation of another diner, ordered the meat lovers' omelette with the optional polish sausage. Coffee refills were frequent and timely. We had extensive conversation with the owner man and wife and their outstanding server-daughter. We had really nice dining experience; we were made to feel like family, although we didn't have to do anything except eat, enjoy, and pay. This is not five star fine French dining. This is a cozy, comfortable, social dining experience with really good food and nice people. Of course, neither of us finished our meal, so we get to enjoy the Chalet remotely today. Sometimes when you are driving and you run across a greasy spoon in the middle of no where, it's the best thing ever. Not so with the Chalet on Fox Lake. I'm not looking for the Ritz, but this place was really run down. They charge a $1 for one can of pop. The food was expensive. The chili had so much pasta that had been cooked for so long it was grey, could be called neither chili nor pasta. They have an extensive fish fry menu for Fridays, so I thought a fish sandwich might be good. The fish wasn't even as good as generic frozen fish from the grocery store and was slimy and gross. The bun was either cooked too long or was from the 1950's . For a place in Wisconsin to have this bad of cheese curds they must have violated a state law. The service was mediocre at best. My recommendation is keep driving and find somewhere...

Over 50 minute wait time for breakfast. That's crazy to wait that long. Had i been told that it would be almost an hour wait, i would have left and gone somewhere else. And the place wasnt even that busy!! Coffee was so weak, like tea. Hamburger patty had a very odd, gamey flavor. Didn't know if I'd make it home without becoming ill. Managed to keep the breakfast down. I must say for $20, I expected a lot more. I've paid a lot less and received more. People who came in 10 minutes after me got their food at the same time as my food was brought out. They also had looks of boredom, disgust waiting for 40+ minutes. Should have gone to Kwik Trip for a fresh, delicious, egg bagel for 3.29 and great coffee for under $1, and I will next time. You gotta...
