The Milky Way — Restaurant in Freedom Township

I am disappointed in the customer service I received tonight. This was our first, and probably only time, coming here. We drove out from Altoona to support your local business (instead of eating at one of the many chain ice cream restaurants that our little city has to offer). I ordered a banana split and after asking what was on it, asked to change one of the toppings to peanut butter. They changed one of my toppings but the rest wasn't what she had explained to me (and my banana wasn't ripe, which is the most important part). Overall, it didn't taste good. The lady who originally took our order wouldn't replace it with something cheaper. A banana split costs very little to make and we paid over $4 for it. Corporate chains usually don't bat an eye when it comes to good customer service and would have given me a replacement, which is why I'll continue to support Dairy Queen or Coldstone in the future. I know losing one person to your competition doesn't really seem like it means much, but now I only have a negative experience to explain when people ask...

What do I need to say? The Milky Way has been an East Freedom establishment for decades and there's a reason. While the servers are usually high schoolers, the owners Donna and Dan make sure they are adequately trained. They are fast, efficient, and delicious. They always have vanilla, chocolate, and twist. Every three or four days, they have a specialty flavor. Today, it was piña colada. I have never gotten anything bad ever... And I've been going for as long as I can remember. I prefer a twist shake, an ice cream sandwich, or a banana parfait with nuts (which is vanilla ice cream, hot fudge and a whole sliced banana). I love this place- I’ve been coming since I was a little kid. The food is fantastic and the service is great. However, I was out tonight trying some of the fall offerings (highly recommend!) and noticed a sign inside the work space reminding employees “if you have time to lean, you have time to clean!” and was highly disappointed. These girls work hard to provide the service and food that so many people love, and I find it upsetting to see such a draconian and downputting phrase posted in their faces constantly reminding them that they are not allowed a moment to breathe, especially from a small business.
