I would never come back. I don't believe I've ever written a Google review before. I also consider myself fairly confident and personable, and I do prefer to talk to people to give feedback vs writing reviews online (obvious since this is my first one). In the moment this past Sunday, I was taken back and had no words.
After about 5 minutes (into our 3 hour tour), Cat, the tour guide, was super degrading. I asked a question trying to understand a “ball park” amount of bunches of grapes in a bottle of wine. My intent was not to know the exact amount. My intent was to understand if it’s a whole row of grapes that goes into a bottle. Or if it’s a small bunch. I never expected an exact amount. I thought if this whole row of grapes was in a bottle, then wow that’s a special bottle of wine if it takes this whole row.
She started out the tour telling everyone how no question was a stupid question. Obviously, she didn't really mean that.
She proceeded to degrade me for asking such a question. It continued throughout the tour - 3 long hours. “Does that look like the amount of grapes needed in a bottle.” "482 grapes needed in a bottle? What do you think?” In a mocking tone. How would she think I would feel to be mocked for asking such a question?
To the production guy: “Hey, Kyle, (or whatever his name was), exactly how many grapes go into a bottle of wine.” “See he doesn’t even know”. I mentioned several times that wasn’t my question, but she didn't care and her tone and mockery didn’t stop. I felt so be-littled.
What a horrible experience. It was our first wine tour, and I only hoped the rest of the Michigan tours weren’t so awful. The tour guide Cat, was super super disrespectful and I would absolutely never return.
In hindsight, she could have easily handled it with: “it depends on so many factors, we would never know” Ok that’s a fair answer. But no, she had to be-little and was aggressively making me feel like an idiot for 3 long hours. In hindsight, I should have confronted her as aggressively as she was acting towards me, but I was too upset. So I just sat at the back, didn't say one more word, and painfully tried to make it through, trying to distract myself without making a scene.
Customer experience is a big deal at small companies, and hopefully this review can save someone from a horrible experience, and convince them to just go to another winery in the area. We went to two others in the area and I had absolutely great experiences. Michigan wineries were amazing with the...
Read moreI've been out wine tasting in Michigan and Indiana for years now. It is what it is. I feel that we can do white pretty well. I've had a few good Gewerztraminers and Traminettes, an excellent Albarino from Tabor Hill, and very nice Rose from St. Julian.
I guess I know what to expect from the terroir, and my expectations are not high. Mostly I like to drive around the countryside, hopefully hit the lake, admire the vineyards, talk with people, and have fun in my region. Oh, and I'm a total wine snob and my favorite varietal is Montrachet. Trust me I wish I could roll in the blackberry wine gutter of 20% residual sugar of my hometown varieties but alas I have a high end palate on a working lady's salary.
Anyway on a lazy spring day on the backroads of Fennville me and my boyfriend happened upon Modales Winery. I was prepared for another, ahm, standard Michigan wine tasting experience, but what I got was obviously something else entirely!
I was completely blown away! My boyfriend is a professed "California Wine Snob" and he was so impressed by our tasting that he immediately inquired about becoming a member.
Their wines are simply incredible, and they are certainly the best smelling wines I have ever encountered here. They are the only completely organic winery in this part of Michigan and it shows through the scent profile. Simply clean, fruity, floral, rich, luscious, my brain and olfactive nerve was short circuiting while I breathed in deeply. I could not believe how good their wines smelled, let alone tasted.
So I'm normally a dry white girl but their reds are the best I've ever had in MIchigan. They are the real deal. I had a red tasting flight and it was stunning at how good everything was.
Everyone who works here is kind, courteous, knowledgeable, and most importantly a lot of fun to be around! You can tell that they like their jobs, where they work, and their profession as a whole. It says a lot about Modales if you ask me.
They can get a bit busy, so you might have to make a reservation if you want a guided tasting. If not, get a table and get one of their flights. That's how I started and I was not disappointed.
All their grapes are grown here in our beautiful state and this is a winery all Michiganders can really be proud of! I'm looking forward to driving to Fennville every month and having a few sips of their wine and talking with their amazing staff.
Thank you for being here and congratulations on what a wonderful job you...
Read moreIt was an uncomfortable atmosphere and awkward. They are, as I understand, almost a year old, BUT, you need to have some professionalism when you open a business. The selection was minimal, and not very tasty. I have worked in a winery in Wisconsin, and am very familiar with its practices. Also, it has acreage, and does not allow dogs on its premises?! Every winery I have been to, has allowed dogs on the patios. We felt that this particular winery is just soley, for the purpose of profit. Not to share any quality of what they are producing. It's hard to describe, but this place is not inviting at all, and you feel as though you are bothering them by just being there! It's a very cold, and sterile atmosphere. I also, don't want to sound rude about "locals", but there must be a group that frequents there often, and they completely focused on these people. When we were ready to pay, we stood there forever without acknowledgement, while the bartenders chatted with these other people. I'm sorry, we will never return, or recommend, unless in the future it comes into new management, professionalism, and respect for...
