This was my family's third visit in three years to Daphne's and by far the least satisfying. We were a group of six, so we were seated in a small "private" room (although not by request). The problem with this room is that it's entirely internal (no windows) and is used for two groups at a time with only bifold doors (that don't close all the way) between each party. With another large group in the same room, it was very difficult to enjoy our dinner without hearing their conversation the entire evening.
Our food was decent (except my steak), but not up to the standards we expected. My NY strip steak was ordered medium rare, but was served medium well. The server agreed that it was overcooked, so she returned it and brought another. The replacement was rare, not medium rare. At this point, I was already 15 minutes behind the rest of my party and did not want to wait for a properly cooked steak, so I began to eat it. Flavorless is the best I can say about it. So much gristle that only about half of the steak was edible. The twice baked potato was good, but the "biscuits" with my dinner were awful - hard as rocks, cold, and crumbled into dry little pieces when cut. Frankly, my dinner was a waste of $46. Our server was great, but that's about the only positive thing I can say about this visit.
Incidentally, we were surprised by the number of empty tables in the main dining room on a Saturday night, given that in prior years the restaurant was packed. If we come back next year it will be with the hope of significant...
Read moreWe had reservations for 21 people for my sister n laws birthday. I enjoyed my food for the most part. We had Noah as our server multiple times I told him something and he ignored me actually spoke through wife and asked how I wanted my hamburger steak and I was right there. Did not put in cheese sticks when ordered also did not put cheese in my salad and I was half done before he brought me some. Thank goodness for candace she was really nice and took up his slack my ticket said he was my waiter and they added an automatic 25% tip in my opinion he did not deserve it if anybody candace should have got my tip. Cost is just too high for bad service and mediocre food. The cheese on my salad was ordered and ignored by your as you say your most complimented server as we're the cheese sticks and my drink being refilled until candace stepped in as i said multiple people at my table went without drinks almost all our food was also over cooked shrimp hamburger steaks and other very expensive steaks when told about it he said he wasn't back there when they cooked it so what you want me to do about. I don't agree with a 25% tip for...
Read moreWow. I've lived for decades in Miami and Atlanta, and this little inconspicuous place on 280 between Cordele and Americus is one of the most unique dining experiences I've ever had. It was almost like when you ask your great aunt if she's got any liquor around, and she breaks out a bottle of MacCallan 25 like it's no big deal: nonchalantly premium in a comfortable place.
The food was top notch period. I haven't seen a cut of meat that thick and beautiful for under $50 ($42 and well worth it) since the 90s.
Good service is attentive without being disruptive, friendly but not contrived, and they hit it right in the mark. Effervescent minus the kind of ostentation I've usually seen with that level of food and ambiance.
Accomplishing homey atmosphere in fine dining is no easy feat, but Daphne Lodge does it and I'm not even sure how. It's more about a feel than a look, and it's there.
Highly recommend. Worth taking a detour off 75, but check the hours. A place like this isn't open all day every day, and it shouldn't be, because...
