My wife and I met up with one of my 1st cousins and his wife to go out for a nice meal. We do this every so often and we enjoy the company and trying restaurant we've never been to. On June 8th 24 we decided to visit a restaurant on the outer edge of Brunswick Ga., one that my now deceased mother had visited a few time and spoke well of. When we arrived at Mudcat Charlie's I was somewhat impressed with the atmosphere as it sits back in the corner of a marina / fish camp which ment there is a river (the Altamah River). There was a parking lot full of vehicles which usually means good food, good service. Let me say this now, we weren't in any hurry so a wait was not going to be an issue. We went inside and gave our name and to be put on the list and only waited maybe 20 minutes for a table which was not a problem. While waiting we looked over the menu and the food on the menu looked okay. I will say the food was a little pricey but it was seafood on a river so we kind expected that. However while waiting we could not help but to notice the temperature inside was very warm, better described as hot. We also noticed all food and drinks were being served on throw away china. When we went to our table it was in a separate room than the bar and it had better views to the river as well as better air conditioning. I will remind you we were not in a hurry so for us the times weren't an issue and I am only going to mention the times so you the readers of the reviews will be prepared if you decide to visit this restaurant. Anyway we ordered some appetizers which was two orders of cheese sticks and two orders of fried mushrooms. We also went ahead and place our order for our meals which were as followed. My cousin ordered the surf and turf which is a 12oz steak medium well, grilled shrimp, and for sides he got a salad and French fries. His wife ordered a plain burger well done with fries and mac and cheese. My wife ordered a 16oz ribeye with mac and cheese and fries as sides. I ordered the surf and turf (12oz steak medium rare and fried shrimp) with slaw and fries as sides. After approx 5 minutes the salad my cousin ordered and the "slaw" I ordered came to the table as well as our drinks which was served in 12oz thin clear cheap plastic throw away cups. The salad looked pretty good however the slaw was a very small cup of shedded cabbage with a small cup of thousand island dressing. Being from South Ga. to me slaw is shredded cabbage with mayo and sugar, and sometimes even a scoop of sweat relish cubs. So my slaw was in reality cabbage salad. Then the appetizer came and the cheese sticks were as you would expect to get from any restaurants. The mushrooms were cut up very small and was maybe half a hand full which to me for the amount of 8.75 I would expect portobello mushrooms cut maybe in half not diced up so small. So for that I was very disappointed. After maybe 15 to 20 minutes our main course arrived. I will be short to describe this. The hamburgers was not even close to being well done, the medium well steak was well done, the 16oz ribeye that was suppose to be well done was rare, the mac and cheese was made with mayo or something like mayo in it, I assume to prevent it from being dry that destroyed the flavor, the steak I ordered that was supposed to be rare was well 75% done will a little pink in spots. All of the meat was over cooked on the outside and the steak was extremely tuff. The surf and turf meal was 30.00 a plate and at that price I was disappointed in the poor quality of the meat. Two of the meals were sent back and removed from the bill. Overall experience, the service was great, I have no complaint about the service. The restaurant itself needs some attention, it is in need of some air conditioning repairs. The one quality that the restaurant has that I would think would be a focal point is the view to the river. With that being said it the windows did not appear to have been cleaned in a long time which takes away from enjoying the river view. No more room...
Read moreEnjoyed a nice meal last Sunday with the family at Muscat Charley's. I had the Mahi Tacos and my wife had the Fried Shrimp. We both had side salads and I ordered a side of Hush Puppies to share. We were meeting family we hadn't seen in more than 30 years so my attention wasn't directed at the restaurant or the food as much as I normally do. I guess the best I can do is that nothing was left on our plates and we didn't ever have to look for the waitress for service. She was very attentive without being overly so. As for the food itself, the fish was fresh and tasty. The salad wasn't anything memorable, just standard fair but everything was fresh. If I had a give a criticism I'd say I wanted more. The portion size on the fish tacos wouldn't have been enough to fill me up. I was glad I ordered the extra side and I can tell you that they do know how to make hush puppies!
We arrived early, about 11:30am and it was easy to get a table, but by 1pm, the place had a waiting line. So, do arrive early or plan to wait. If we are ever in the area again, we would definitely stop in again.
If you are traveling on 1-95 Darien/Brunswick this would be a great option. The restaurant is less than 5 minutes off the interstate and you will be transported to another time. The restaurant's setting reminded me of many of the places from my youth in Florida. It's beautiful. I heard eating on the deck at sunset is the thing to do, and I...
Read moreI’ve been to Skipper’s in Darien several times and figured I’d try Mudcat Charlie’s this go round. The Google reviews seemed to be mostly positive so what could go wrong?
The part about the service being slow that everyone is commenting on is legit. Holy smokes. They weren’t even busy - with the wait staff sitting at a front table rolling silverware together and it was still an act of God to have a waitress come by to do refills or bring the check.
The food? I have my doubts on this being “local Georgia shrimp” or seafood or whatever they have on their menu. That is unless you count the local Sysco or US Foods distributor as “local”. Nothing tasted fresh; the Mac and cheese was from a box, the grits were instant with a dabbling of shredded cheese from a bag…Actually, I take that back, the chicken tenders weren’t from Sysco or US Foods because they don’t sell chicken fingers that skinny so those were hand cut.
It wasn’t all bad though. The highlight were the hushpuppies. They’re big and moist, just as they should be. The river marina setting is pretty unique and the place is definitely a dive with a decent bar and cold beer. I could imagine this would be a cool spot to hang out and drink after a day of fishing. Stopping and eating while traveling up or down I-95 is a completely...
