First things first, let me apologize for being so excited about my food and not taking pictures.
Prices: Think precovid.
Fried chicken is errthing!! The meatloaf is as close to my wife's as you could get. So we ordered the meat and two sides from the hot bar. My wife ordered meatloaf with mashed potatoes and mac n cheese.
Meatloaf: a good sized portion with just the right amount of ketchup glazed on top. Every bite we were able to have the perfect amount with each one. Tender and juicy, just wonderful childhood memories rolling through my head while we ate.
Mashed potatoes: just the right portion again, I had brown gravy and my wife had them plain. I loved the gravy it reminded me of my Nana's growing up. The potatoes were fluffy and had what I believe had just the right amount of salt. I'll go ahead and tell you now that I didn't add any salt and pepper to anything.
Mac n cheese: was great, nice and warm not super cheesy like some like it. I think it's close to chick fil a's taste with less cheese which both my wife and I enjoyed.
Turnip greens: Fantastic! Best I've had in a long time. I used just a little hot pepper sauce on them and BOOYYY!!! Let me tell yall I couldn't stop smacking my lips.
Jalapeno cornbread: besides "Moist" one word describes this "Phenomenal!"
Fried chicken: yes you're right I saved this one for last and you know why. First I'm no slouch in the kitchen, I cook my own fried chicken sometimes twice a week. I'm from Kentucky and please don't laugh because I wouldn't eat KFC if it was given away. Now if were talking Lee's chicken then maybe. Even then THEY AIN'T GOT NOTHING ON MARY RUTH'S! Yes I actually yelled that out. I've had fried chicken all over the country, and yall know just as well as me that some yayhoo on Google always talking about "OMG the fried chicken is the best ever." Or "Dude the fried chicken here is from heaven." "Man the fried chicken so good it make you wanna slap yo Momma!" To all the above they ain't got nothing on Mary Ruth's.
We are so happy we found this gem to what a lot would say is in the middle of no where. How ever it is just minutes from I65. It's 8 hours exactly from my driveway and on the way down to Florida or on the way home. I must say though I would just drive 8 hours to eat here. Yes it's that good. If your going anywhere near this place and are hungry. If you love country cooking, and soul food and want to remind your palate what childhood was like this is your place.
Service: First class, superlative, excellent, kind friendly, family. I can go on and on and on. These ladies make you feel so welcome I seriously felt like I was just at my cousin's place or something. They are all so welcoming and so sweet. Latonya MAN! She is awesome! She had me cracking up and made me want to come back as soon as I could. For real all really really cool people. If we had more folks like them there would be less starving people, less war, less criminals all together. Why do I say this? Come see them. Meet them for yourselves I promise you if you come down here you'll not be disappointed.
To all other food reviewers everywhere I challenge you to take the time and come down here. It's worth it. Yall like me always looking for that place. Here's one!
To everyone at Mary Ruth's THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Keep doing what you're doing making belly's happy everyday! We'll be...
Read moreWe were traveling and had been on the road all day. We dont eat fast food so we always look for small businesses to support. This place had great reviews so we stopped in. It was around 2:30 in the afternoon. The place was busy. The first thing that stuck out to me was how warm it was in the building. One small window air conditioner for the whole dining room. That didnt deter us though. We were told to have a seat so we did. It took awhile for someone to finally ask us if we needed a menu. The lady that handed us the menus was wearing gloves which she never changed the entire time we were there. She went from one task to another without changing gloves. We both wanted chicken since we dont eat pork but they only had enough left for one meal so my husband got what was left with greens, Mac and cheese, baked beans and a corn muffin. I said well I wanted grilled chicken but I guess I'll take a 2 piece dark. She replied you only want 2 pieces? Im not sure they will only make 2 pieces. So I said well just dont worry about it and my hisband could eat his food. She walked to the back and came back out and said they would make it but it would be 15 min. I said ok and my husband ate while we waited so we could get back on the road. I proceeded to pay for the food while we waited. The menu stated a 2 piece dark with 1 side was $6.00. She charged me $8.50. I questioned the charge and she said yeah we haven't updated the menu. I replied well Ill pay for it since the chicken is already cooking but how is it my fault as a cuatomer that you haven't changed the price? That is false advertising. What if I had only had $20 to feed us both and I chose that item to keep our food under that and now you charged me more? Thats not a good way to do your customers. Now let's talk about the quality of the food:
BBQ chicken: small wings, meat was dry and seemed old but did have good flavor
Mac and cheese: absolutely no flavor and not cheesy.
Baked beans: clearly canned pork and beans with sugar. Didn't taste bad but not great. I would like to see some onions and meat in them.
Greens: tastes like canned greens with no seasoning. Does have some meat in them though.
Fried chicken: the breading has great flavoring.
Corn muffin: not edible...was hard.
I leave honest reviews and I am hard to please. I want great food and I'll gladly pay for great food and service! Customer service and cleanliness is very important to me. The staff were friendly but unwilling to provide service over menu pricing. We were not impressed with this...
Read moreWe enjoyed finding this little out of the way country restaurant. The owners are hands-on and very nice. Our food was good, just not very warm. It was served to us off the buffet. We both had the Ribs plate, which was three small ribs and two small portioned sides. The Ribs were tasty with the Rib sauce brought to our table, though not really warm. The macaroni and cheese is quite good, though barely warm off the buffet. The greens were absolutely fantastic. While eating our ribs, the server came and took the bottle of barbecue sauce away to refill it. I'm not sure why, but she never brought it back. We just ate the rest plain. Overall, we enjoyed the food, but a larger portion would have been better for what we were quite surprised to be charged. Don't go by their online menu on their website, nor the menu IN the restaurant. It's also right there at the register where I inquired about my bill being so surprisingly high when wrung up. It came to $38.48. The small ribs plate came to $14.99 each, plus drinks at $2.50 each, though all less on the menu. The menu showed the ribs and drinks for $12.00 and $2.00, respectively. When I questioned the amount we were charged, she said the menu needs updating. She said what was in the register was correct. My husband tipped her $10 as well. I'd say definitely try them. The food was good. Just ask about the current pricing on the menu first. The buffet has a nice selection, just ask if they can microwave your...
