A bit of a drive but boy, was it worth it! Headed to Mr. Z's in Northwestern RI, near the Connecticut border. My husband was familiar with the location due to his job, hadn't eaten there previously, but heard great recommendations. So off we went!
We were greeted warmly at the door and seated right away (we arrived around 4 pm, before the dinner crowd). Husband had a beer, me a Diet Coke to start. Our waitress, Coleen, was wonderful, brought us a basket of warm, fresh crusty rolls with butter with our drinks while we perused the extensive menu. Large selection of Italian favorites and seafood, pizza and subs as well. We both decided on the chicken parmesan, mine with angel hair pasta and his with linguini. I chose the dinner special that included soup or salad, entree and dessert for one price. My husband opted for only the entree.
My salad arrived promptly and it was perfect, nicely chilled with my choice of dressing, French. Not long after, our entrees arrived and wow, they were HUGE! Both had two large, tender, perfectly breaded chicken breasts, topped with mozzarella cheese and some of the best tomato sauce I've had outside of the North End in Boston! Pasta was perfectly cooked, al dente as well. I ended up taking half home for tomorrow's lunch! My husband cleaned his plate so no leftovers for him.
There were several selections for my dessert, and I chose the baklava. A nice sweet ending to the meal, I ended up taking half of that home also as I was at this point quite full.
The restaurant was clean, bright with a large bar area as well as a dining room with lots of windows. We will definitely be returning to Mr. Z's for...
Read moreMy daughter said she wanted some pasta for her birthday, and so we looked up places with good pasta and this place came up. Had never been here, but the reviews looked promising. Made a reservation and headed on in that night.
We got there and they had our table waiting. The outdoor part of the restaurant isn't much to look at, but once you get inside, it's pretty comfortable. We were by the windows where the sun was reflecting off some windshields in the parking lot - that was a little hard to take - but soon enough the sun went lower and things were fine.
The staff were great, friendly, prompt, kind. The food prices were on par with what everything costs nowadays, and they had a nice extensive menu for whatever you were in the mood for. Pizza, pastas, salads, etc.
There were many in our party and we ordered some of everything. Gotta say, we were really impressed with the food. It wasn't like 'out of this world' level food, but all of it was really good, tasted great, fresh. What was really impressive was the portion size...oh my god do you get a lot of food. Everybody basically got enough food for dinner, and enough to have leftovers at least twice. HUGE PORTIONS. So really a good value for the price, since you're getting a lot of great-tasting food.
Definitely recommend checking them out. It's not the kind of place you'd lounge around in for hours or anything, but for a great, comfortable place to have a nice dinner with a group of friends, definitely...
Read moreWe usually eat at the Plainfield, Ct location of Mr. Z's but decided to try their other location. The restaurant wasn't very busy so we had no problem getting seated. Our waitress was very friendly and quick to welcome us and take our drink order. The drinks took a long time to arrive and while waiting for our drinks, we noticed that it was rather chilly inside so we kept our coats on, not something we like to do while eating. I can understand trying to save costs of heating but in my opinion, it was far too cool to be comfortable. After our food order was taken, it was another longer than usual wait for the food to arrive. We both ordered pasta which was a good sized portion but the pasta was a bit overcooked and on the mushy side. Prices for my girlfriend's wine was typical but I thought that the price of my beer was higher than it should have been.....$8 for a pint of Blue Moon. This brand usually costs me $5-$6 everywhere else. The seats could have used some padding because they were as hard as a rock and very uncomfortable. I doubt we'll be going back because their other restaurant has comfortable padded seats and has...
