This is a review related to the take out order today with 2 phillys and a Reuben, 3 orders of fries and a Oreo shake.
As my coworker came back to work with the food the smell of fries made my mouth water and stomach growl. I was so hungry and excited to have a decent Philly.
I reached into the carry out bag to pull our food out and dig in. Immediately I went for a fry, as I tried to grab one a tangled greasy mass of fries was attached and came with. These were hands down the greasiest fries I’ve ever had. The cardboard boat they were in was so saturated that it left shmear of grease across the counter. You guys gotta be able to fry a potato, I mean come on. Just seemed like no effort was put into making them. Also, where’s the salt? Who eats fries with no salt? Completely unacceptable and the worst fries I’ve ever had.
So as I reach in for the Philly, pretty annoyed that the fries are inedible, hoping the sandwich will make up for the fist full of grease sitting in front of me I’m not expecting much. And as my gut knew I didn’t get much. The only thing I got was a big hunk of bread. Now the roll was fine but again, total lack of effort. The entire sandwich was bone dry except for the minute amount of “cheese “ on top of the 2oz of meat. No exaggeration, there’s more meat on a singular taco than there was on this 8 inch roll. You guys have an iconic place there and are pumping out less than mediocre food. You’re stealing from people, it’s not right. 50 bucks for maybe , and this is a stretch, maybe 5 bucks worth of ingredients!?
A Philly should be piled high with seasoned meat, then you add a healthy amount of onions and peppers that have been fried and seasoned, now the cheese is a big point of contention in the world of phillys so I’ll just say whatever cheese you’re putting on there should be a sufficient amount. 1/3 meat 1/3 peppers onions 1/3 cheese. And would it kill you to toast the bun a little bit. Maybe put some garlic butter on there too?! The food presentation and taste was passionless, dead and sad.
I always see that help wanted sign up…yeah help wanted? The type of help you need I don’t think anyone...
Read moreFirst of all our server was great. The food however was not and I wish I would have thought to take pictures because the sad excuses for crab cakes they were charging TWENTY TWO dollars for were ccrraaazzyyy. They were flat and not even a shape to them they were charging 11 dollars per crab cake when the 2 cakes combined barely resembled one normal size crab cake I've paid way less for way better quality at other restaurants and was very disappointed that the small piece of Lettuce that came on the plate next to the crab cakes was actually bigger than the crab cakes themselves. The kids burgers tasted plain and frozen and the spaghetti was sitting in a puddle of water and pasta was overdone. Not to mention that we had them take the crab cakes off our bill so they then charged us an extra THIRTY DOLLARS onto our meal for one small side salad and an order of fries plus the automatic 20%gratuity that they added WITHOUT EVEN TELLING US ABOUT IT FIRST to our bill because of their being 6 of us. All in all I would not recommend going here nor would I ever take my family back there. 95 dollars for 4 kids meals which were 8.95 a piece and a watered down plate of spaghetti for 16 dollars that nobody wanted to eat and I'm still leaving there hungry with no dinner but spent 95 dollars. You figure...
Read moreWe popped in for a lunch break and while it was busy, the food didn't disappoint. I'd love to give more of a 4.5 star rating, but I think prices might be slightly inflated more than ideal for what you're getting.
My coworkers mostly had sandwiches (the Philly Cheesesteak) which was commended by all, while I had a specialty salad of the day, their "black and bleu" salad. The steak was marinated nicely, seared well in thin strips, and not overdone (though not rare, as I'd like it, which would be hard with how thin it was.)
The environment seemed suitable for a casual meal, and certainly was welcoming to families. The dessert options are substantive and there are many pies available, among the other desserts--ice creams, shakes, "Smoosh-in" ice cream treats, and root beer floats.
The prices were reasonable; my salad was $10.99 and the Cheesesteaks were around $7, but didn't come with anything as a side.
The place was reasonably clean, but could probably use a little attention. Most of the decorations have been hodge-podged together (part of the local appeal, I'm sure).
Pop in for an enjoyable dining experience--while you won't be blown away by the prices or the unique offerings, South Side Soda Shop offers a fun environment, good prices,...
