Unexpected disappointment We chose this restaurant based off a high rating and reviews through yelp. However, neglected to pay attention to how old the reviews were.
You'll think I made this series of unfortunate food mishaps up, but I assure you I didn't.
We were the first guests seated when they opened at 4pm on a Sunday. 2 kids and 2 adults. We were first caught off guard by the pricey menu. We chose to order 2 bowls of clam chowder, coconut prawns appetizer, mozzarella appetizer, kids linguine with million dollar meatball, and kids chicken strips.
You'll see pictures of the menu with our review. The kids menu was interesting (hard to decipher). It's cute that the owner allowed his child to write them out. BUT the food options were all ran together so it took a few times of reading it to determine the different options. One thing we didn't take a picture of was the front of the regular food menu. The fancy folders were previously from another place of business and Overboard placed a printed sticker over the top of the precious logo. A bit tacky. But whatever.
While waiting on food we were served a mini loaf of bread with butter. It was good. The kids ate their apple sauce (came as their side, but before their meal). When our clam chowder came out we were surprised to see it was a Manhattan Clam Chowder (tomato base, not white cream). This was not stated on the menu and we neglected to ask, our bad. The chowder looked like a vegetable soup. Went to take one bite and it was cold, like out of the fridge cold. The waitress apologized and took it away.
The prawns come out and they are a deep, dark, fried brown (clearly over cooked). Tried them anyways. The sauce they're served with the prawns was delicious. I think the shrimp would have been great if it hadn't been fried into a rubber state.
A second mini loaf of bread was offered while we waited for food. It still tasted good but this one had a cold spot in the very middle of each slice. As if the bread were warmed from frozen.
The Mozzarella appetizer had great flavor. The disappointment here is that it was served barley warm. The cheese was not melted at all.
The linguine with million dollar meatball was an epic fail. The large meatball was cold in the center. The red sauce tasted like it was a Vodka sauce or fermented (neither of which should be on a child's plate!)
The kids chicken was served with one of the pieces clearly cut in half. We assume this was to check to make sure the chicken was done. It was in fact done. Like the shrimp, it was so done it was rubberized. The taste? Horrid. We did not allow our child to eat it. The kids did however share the french fries.
Luckily for us the waitress was able to get the meal comped, since we didn't really eat it anyways.
I will add that there was another couple eating at the same time as us. They noted that the restaurant was usually very good and they've been going there over the last 5 years. Maybe this was a fluke?! Not sure. It was so bad that we will not be giving it...
Β Β Β Read moreHow does this place have an above 4 star rating? It is VERY average and not worth the prices.
Booked this restaurant for my husbandβs birthday based on positive reviews here. Our helpful hostess was in 6th grade and we could see some of her siblings efficiently and politely serving other tables. Our server was not one of her siblings, and had a very brusque manner. It was my first experience ever in a restaurant having a menu pulled out of my hands.
We ordered the shrimp overboards & the special of rib eye & shrimp.
Shrimp overboards: tasted nice enough, the boiled zucchini & snap peas on the side were raw and were not seasoned. Also the snap peas were 2 different colors, which was weird- in my experience this is due to varying levels of freshness, but I am happy to be corrected on this.
Rib eye & shrimp: asked for medium rare, received a well done steak. The shrimp was bland. Both were covered in a very strong tasting bbq sauce that over-powered the flavor of the meat. I do not think the bbq sauce was made in-house. The garlic mash on the side tasted good.
Service was slow: there were 4 servers working and I feel that our server was maybe working back of house also? Either way, back of house must have been getting slammed if their bell-ringing was anything to go by. It was very obvious that there was at least one v p-ed off person back there.
We ordered a 2nd round of drinks and the glasses from our first round were left on the table. It took 30 minutes for our dirty plates to be cleared. In that time we had decided against waiting for dessert. Our server eventually did return and was complaining about how busy she was- an apology for the delay would have been nice.
All in all, we wonβt be returning. Iβm not giving a lower review as we did eat the food, wine was nice, but based on the quality of the food and the service we received, we did not feel it was worth $71 for 4 glasses of wine & 2 entrees...
Β Β Β Read moreHeard good things about this place. Walked in about 5pm, sat at the bar took quite a while for the bartender to come over, told her I'll like a glass of ice tea, lemonade, and captain Morgan. Came back with 2 glasses, one ice tea, one lemonade, told her I'll like them mixed, half and half, with captain Morgan. Gave me a look. Came back with the half and half, and a glass of water. Guess Captain Morgan and glad of water sounds similar. I gave up. Girlfriend came back from the bathroom she waited another 9 minutes before we got up and moved to a high top, bartender didn't acknowledge her. It was right before the dinner rush, there was another couple and a guy at the bar. She had 2 drink tickets waiting. I would understand if she was slammed, but no. Told the hostess/ waitress we were going to a high top. She sat us and again waited another 16 minutes, before we got our order taken. She was very pleasant and apologetic. May try again, maybe not. We drove 45 minutes to get there specifically. Won't be making a special trip like that again, only if we are in the area. Cloth napkins were still wet. Bread was delicious, came with an herb butter not enough herb tasted like regular butter which was still fine. Their bread dishes came out dirty, with hair on them. Girlfriend head stuffed shrimp which was good. I had the cioppino good but the broth was flavorless. Must have been a really off night cause almost everything was a disappointment. Like I said I heard a lot of really good things...
