My family and I decided to try ABC Chinese for dinner last night. We’re always looking for different places to try, always with the hopes of finding a favorite local place to enjoy. With that being said this was not it. We spent right around $140 for dinner, we did order a few different dishes since this was our first time ordering here we really did not know what to order so why not order a few options. I’ll go over everything that we did order below and what our family thought they should be rated. Overall we decided on a 3 star rating for the restaurant and this was based on serving size and freshness of two of the dishes. I will start by saying the serving size of each dish we ordered was enough to feed at least 2 but if your sharing with multiple dishes as we did easily 4 servings per entree. I should say we did order out so the only thing I can say about the restaurant it’s self is the two staff who greeted me seemed very welcoming and the restaurant looked clean. So with that let’s start this review.
Dish #1 Broccoli Beef- This was far the best entree ordered. The broccoli was fresh and perfectly cooked. Plenty of beef which for the most part was perfectly cooked. Most of the beef was shaved thin pieces which were tender and flavorful while a few thicker chunks were tough and grisly. Very garlicky which we enjoyed. The sliced carrots were also perfectly cooked. 8/10
Dish #2 Phoenix Dragon ( name of entree on menu) This one had shrimp and chicken (not breaded) with mixed veggies ( cabbage, green beans, and celery I believe) sautéed in a white garlic sauce. Very subtle flavor, the protein was cooked well and the veggies were also cooked perfectly. 8/10
Dish #3 General Taos Chicken- On menu this is rated spicy. Which is why we ordered it. Unfortunately it had very little flavor and a very lite hint of spice. Not to much to rave about here the chicken was dried out under the breading. Hard bits of dried chicken is not very edible. This was served on a bed of broccoli which was cooked well. 4/10
Dish #4 Sweet and Sour Chicken- Here we also had dried hard chicken under a thick breaded coating and then tossed in a very thin sweet and sour sauce. No flavor here except from the pineapple and bell pepper which it was served with. 2/10
Dish #5 Lemon Chicken- Before I post this review I would like to say I specifically asked about this dish because It’s something I had not seen before on a menu. The guy who took my order said it was chicken in a lemon sauce. That’s all of a description I was given. The to-go menu did not offer any other details. I was thinking tender cuts of chicken and a lemon sauce. Nope not it, it was breaded hard chicken pieces again. They were tinged yellow, which I’m guessing that is why it is called lemon chicken. No flavor at all. 3/10
Dish #6 Orange Chicken- Most of us know what orange chicken is. I was expecting this one to be breaded. But again the chicken was dried out and hard. No flavor. 2/10
Dish #7 Chow Mein- Lots of noodles very little veg. We did order the shrimp version. The shrimp did seem a little over cooked in this dish. The chow mein itself was on the dryer side. Very little flavor. 5/10
Dish #8 Chicken Fried Rice- Extremely dry. Fried rice and chicken. No egg and no veggies. 2/10
We ordered a side of egg rolls which came with 3. They were just that, very mushy inside. Resemble more of a store bought egg roll, not one that would be made in a Chinese restaurant. Also as an add on they offer for $4.75 you can add to any entree soup, egg roll and rice or chow mein. I’m not sure what the soup was but it looked close to egg drop soup with chunks of tofu but it was very dark in color and gelatinous. The ones who tried the soup said 3/10. I believe I covered everything. I did not reach out to the restaurant, it was our choice to try something new and these are our personal ratings. Overall the serving sizes are great, the food was hot for the most part. For whatever reason the breaded dishes were warm at best. No flavor though and dried chicken left them...
Read moreHeard good things about the food and service. On a nice Sunday afternoon, my family and I decided to make a trip from Oroville to Gridley to try out this Chinese restaurant. After living in Los Angeles for 20 years and have eaten authentic Chinese cuisine, we were seeking that taste again. The atmosphere of the restaurant is small and quite. The service is excellent, price is a bit high for certain items, and food was decent. I was not wowed by the taste. We ordered the orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken, green bean in garlic sauce, combination low mein (big, soft noodles), and steam rice. The steam rice was ok but the noodles was very tasty. This I would recommend.
I didn't have the option to rate them 3.5 stars, and didn't want to low ball the restaurant. I decided on 4 stars. For this area, I guess this as good as it gets. I don't believe we will return. Still...
Read moreThis is a max out score of 3 stars for me... I grew up in Gridley and I was on the ABC side of the tracks for Gridley..(There's only two Chinese restaurants in Gridley) So ABC was my spot and I've been with them since they where in the small building of heritage oak plaza across from Bank of the West.. Anyway I'm here to tell you guys they're the worst they've ever been.. Now that might be bias because I've always ate there/25+ years but I'm very disappointed of lately. I mean really disappointed... With that said they're probably still better then the other place in town but I plan to find out and try the enemy because it was that terrible at...
