Four of us went in this past Saturday afternoon and sat at the bar for lunch and drinks. The place was packed and the staff (including one of the owners) was working together like a well oiled machine. As two huge groups were sat we were recommended to order in stages so we complied. We sampled the Bloody Mary shrimp salsa (which was piled high with shrimp) were quickly probed as to how it was. We explained to the bar manager that although the shrimp were plentiful we would have liked more of the salsa. Before we could have another sample, another container of salsa (only) appeared along with requested hot sauce and we mopped up the remainder of the appetizer. After another frosty cold beverage three of us decided on the grilled grouper tacos and the fourth had the shrimp basket with fries. While waiting for our food, we must have seen at least 30 tacos come out of the kitchen. When our food arrived, we quickly found out why. The grouper was awesome, cooked to perfection with the perfect toppings. The shrimp basket was delicious and the cole slaw tasted freshly made. The short time we waited allowed us time to visit with the other patrons at the bar ( a nice mix of folks both new to Mathews coming here to our county for the first time, and long time property owners). I would definitely recommend coming here. For an establishment only being open a week, it is very impressive to see the owners and staff work together in the manner they do and striving to make The Hole In The Wall even better than it already is. After enjoying the great food and views, we enjoyed a large group of dolphins playing around us as we cruised our boat...

I wanted so badly to like this place because it was highly recommended by locals. I think we caught it on an off day but this was a pretty bad experience. We waited for a table which was fine because we needed a high chair and couldn’t do a high top. It wasn’t a long wait. Our waiter took 15 minutes to get our drink order, another 5-10 to get an appetizer in, and I had to stop him from walking away a 3rd time to put in our food. Our food took over an hour, maybe an hour and a half to come out. Our waiter only came to give us an update when him and I finally made eye contact and I guess he could sense I was getting annoyed. We were trying to enjoy the time there as it was a nice view, but watching everyone else get their food was pretty frustrating especially for our 2 year old. When I got my food, I had eaten half my sandwich before I realized they had left the plastic wax paper in between my sandwich. I mentioned this to to our waiter who explained that should not have happened and offered me a free dessert, which I appreciated. I was so irritated at this point and our kid was well past his bed time, we boxed up our food...

A hidden gem. It was busy both days we went, but the service and food was on spot. Our second visit, we brought our pup and utilized outside dining. The raw Oysters were plump and succulent. The OBX shrimp were jumbo, firm, and off the chain. The Maui Maui (blackened) was on point. I used to eat at the eatery here back in the 70's and 80's. I understand this business has been at this "historic site" for 5 yrs now. Congratulations!!! Y'all have out down yourselves and I understand they are expanding; a second location in Gloucester Point. It's great to see the great success they've brought to the island, just across the bridge, at the boat landing. You won't be disappointed. Casual dress, very friendly atmosphere and views of the bay make your dining experience so very pleasurable. Definitely coming back more often! My grandfather used to drop his boats in, at the landing for many many years, and we always ate at the eatery that is now The Hole in the Wall! Authentic Island experience right there! Go and enjoy! Experience a great time with friends and family...welcome to Gwynn's Island's The Hole in the Wall "Gem of...

I've been here twice and have really enjoyed it. It's a small little spot that situated right on the water and it's just past the bridge entering Gwynn's Island. It's a perfect spot for a beer and a nosh. My husband and I decided to visit on the 4th of July. They were busy and as hot as it was, we were very comfortable eating outside on their covered deck. My husband had a cheeseburger with fries....he said it was delicious but "very no frills." It didn't come with the usual lettuce tomato, onion, and pickle, so if you want that, i guess you need to ask for it. He said the fries were great. I had the shrimp tacos. Loved them. We also enjoyed an appetizer of onion rings. They were delicious. Service was excellent. This is such a cool little place to check out...especially during the summer months. Good, uncomplicated, fare and great atmosphere. 👍 ** If you are handicapped or have trouble climbing steps this place might not be accessible for you. If there is an alternative entrance, I'm not aware of it. Please call and check just in case, as there are considerable stairs to climb in order to enter.

We were camping at 1000 trails and needed a small diversion because of the rain, so 9n a lark decided to check out Gywnn Island. After a jaunt around the very cool world of Gywnn, stopped in for lunch. SO glad we did, what a treat! Tasty beverages, but the food...we had the fish tacos, a strip of fried flounder on each taco, and the crab cake platter with fries and onion rings, then we split everything. Possibly one of the best crab cakes I've ever had, and having lived in Tidewater for going on 40 years now, I've had a few! The onion rings were amazing, and the fries were out of this world. Have never seen them cut quite like that, and they were some of the best ever. Stupid me, I only took pics of the drinks, but I think you'll find plenty on the site to get the gist. What a treasure, if it were closer, we'd be here alot!

Ok, let me explain about these photos. The food was so delicious and the fresh aromas just completely distracted me from taking pictures before the food was devoured. Every single dish we ordered was uniquely crafted and just good ol’ wholesome yumminess! The staff was a lot of fun. You didn’t just have service, you had fun, personable people getting your order and bringing you the food. I wanted to order one of everything off the menu! Beer was cold and they always made sure we didn’t have an empty glass. I will be going back again! Oh! I almost forgot! The view of the water was beautiful! Everyone gets to enjoy it too!
