My boyfriend and I were doing a little one-night getaway to enjoy the fall leaves, and Spread Eagle was just the ticket! We live a little more than an hour away, so we took back roads down with stops for hiking in the crisp, sunny October air. The Tavern was surrounded by beautiful fall color, and it took only a minute to check-in and we were off to the Jefferson Suite. ||||This room is on the third floor, and no, there is not an elevator. The room is decorated in early American style - lots of floral wallpaper, four-poster bed, fireplace (non-working), and hardwood floors. Being that high up we were right at the level of the treetops, so we had beautiful color out of our windows. We had bottles of water chilling and chocolate chip cookies ready and waiting when we walked in the door! The room has three windows, so lots of light, but the shades do a great job of room darkening - we never sleep in past about 6 am and we didn't wake up until nearly 7:30! The bed was comfortable, with lots of comforters and blankets, and even better - they showed us the thermostat and let us set our room temp! This room was very quiet too - on the second floor there are some dining room tables, so you would be able to hear people during dinner hours, but after the restaurant closes it would be quiet. On the third floor even during dinner, we heard nothing. ||||We had dinner reservations, and we were seated on the second-floor landing right by large windows overlooking the main street - super romantic and private! The wait staff was attentive and polite, the food was to die for, and they even let us order dessert and take it up to our room since we were too stuffed to eat it then and there. I am one of those people who is always cold, especially in restaurants. This is not the case here - they had all the fireplaces roaring and it was really comfortable. In the morning, they cook you breakfast (you tell them the night before when you would like breakfast between 8 am-9:30). You are seated in the main dining room, and then you are given muffins and fresh fruit and coffee when you first arrive. They take your order (breakfast is somewhat customizable but limited - we were offered eggs cooked as we wanted, potatoes, bacon, toast. Every bite was incredible (seriously, they baked the bacon in the oven with brown sugar and maple syrup!) and we were stuffed when finished. Then we were able to walk around the entire house and look at all the pictures and displays since the restaurant was empty. They even let us in the basement (which you really need to see - so, so cool). It was the perfect romantic fall getaway and there is no doubt that we intend to do it again, perhaps this time again next year! And as far as COVID is concerned - everyone on staff wore masks and made effort to keep people socially distant, not only while seated but while waiting to be seated, etc. ||||If you like to hike, just a few minutes' drive away is the Teegarden Covered Bridge which is right on the Greenway - a beautiful, long paved path that...
Read moreWe had a group of 12 for New Years Eve dinner. Our reservation was at 8pm. We were there early and were seated. After being there for 1/2 an hour, our waitress, Robbie still had not approached our table. She finally came over and took our drink and appetizer orders after 40 minutes We still did not get our drinks for close to an hour and 4 of drink orders were wrong (she left them at the table saying she messed up so we can keep the wrong drinks - no one wanted them and they went to waste) and 3 people never received their drinks. She brought out 2 drinks at a time over a 1/2 hour. She told us she had to make and serve the drinks which was why it took so long. When our waitress, Robbie asked for our entree order I asked “is the bar and the kitchen backed up, or will things start moving faster” we had other plans for after dinner and could not wait another hour for entrees. She said extremely rudely “I’m one person. Don’t you think I want to get home to my kids?” My response was as rude as her comment- I said “ the difference is this is your job and you are paid to be here. We are patrons who are paying for this service” So at that point we had received the slowest service I have ever experienced, wrong and missing drink and appetizer orders and a rude waitress who VERY obviously did not want to be at work. As a group, we decided to cut our losses and leave, picking up pizzas on our way to our other plans. We finally left after being there for close to 2 house. We had received 1 drink (some never got a drink) and a few appetizers of which 2 were wrong and 1 never came
I really hope management realizes the amount of money this waitress caused them to lose because of poor, rude service. We are very a very reasonable group. If our server would have explained to us when we were seated that service may be slow and apologized up front, things would have turned out different but instead, she decided to have a rude attitude- a restaurant is only as good as it’s employees and Spread Eagle really needs to rethink their staff. Again, The servers...
Read moreThe atmosphere is wonderful historical. However, I got cold my seat was near the wall and a door and the fireplace was far away and the firewood was piled up in front of it and the fire wasn't very hot. I had been told don't dress too warm because it can get hot. So the cozy factor was missing.. It was a luncheon with my girlfriends. The company of course was wonderful. I food was good but disappointing. I had the shrimp and crab crepe which was delicious a but it was the only thing on the plate being the only flavor of the meal with no other thing on the plate to cut the richness of the cream. know when there should have been something else on the plate to cut the taste of the cream and for aesthetics. For all the hype about the place I was disappointed. The dessert was a lava cake and ice cream. The lava cakes were about as big around as a quarter and the scoop of ice cream was about a small as it could get with a tiny dollop of whipped cream and half of a strawberry. and it cost $9! I had coffee with my dessert. And the service was okay. I wouldn't say outstanding. She was a nice girl but but I would have expected for all the hype about the place and the prices that there would have been lemon in the water and a water pitcher appearing frequently to make sure glasses were filled. None of that happened I had to point at my glass to get a refill. It was a luncheon and from what I could see we were the only ones there. It was great to be with friends but I wasn't that impressed. I didn't feel like I had a $42 lunch experience.. I'm glad I didn't get an appetizer or I would have...
