I tried a few new burger places on the island this time while visiting home, but it is still hard to beat Ono Char Burger.

At Ono Char, the patty is not the center of the meal. Cherished are the textures of the vegetables and the thick layer of shredded cheese, added to the char grilled flavor of the meat. Attached is the photo of the "old fashioned" burger and the "keiki" burger with a side a fries. They cut all of their burgers in half and have them tightly wrapped so that you do not get your hands dirty or end up with an uneven bite at the end. Of course, if you venture onto the "local boy" or another burger with teriyaki sauce on it, be prepared to get your hands and face a little messy; they do not hold back on saucing it up for you.

For serving size, my boyfriend and I usually split all of our meals (cheaper and no left overs) so one burger and one side of fries (+one tall boy beer) satisfied our lunch cravings. There is a general store right next door so you can get a beer to go with this amazing meal. One down side is that there is NO BATHROOM. Come prepared for that.

As a disclaimer, I may be a little biased because I love sprouts and always cut my burgers in half. You will not be disappointed by this...

The previously owned Ono-Char burger (was closed for a few years)… same location made absolutely delicious and huge burgers was raised on Kauai and this spot was a must eat at when going to Hanalei. Meat had a very distinct charcoal flavor- burgers were flavorful and juicy and fat!!!! Hefty Kaiser Buns were buttery and toasted. Veggies were generous. I believe that this restaurant is having success off of the amazing reputation it once had. Fast forward to our recent experience this month….my husband and I were visiting from the mainland. We expected quality-the same from the new owners and were sorely disappointed. Burger char taste was missing, burger itself was small and lacked seasoning flavor. Bun was very small. For a $15 dollar burger I was left feeling like I was gypped. The only redeeming quality of the meal was the fries were good. Wish they offered garlic salt and chili pepper vinegar water to douse fries in like the original. Hopefully, the new owners step up their game and make some changes. Unfortunately, I won’t be back to find...

We've been coming to Kauai at least twice a year for 5 years and today was the first time we've managed to catch this place open. Frequency they are closed even though their website and hours sign says they should be open. Well, closed might have been a better option! We ordered our food at 1:14 and despite the fact there were only 5 small orders ahead of us, we didn't get our food until 1:50. This would have been understandable if they were super busy or if our order was complex. The blue cheese burger with bacon and onion rings and a local girl burger. The only reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 is that the flavor was decent. All the food was Luke warm at best and $40.80 for two SMALL burgers and 8 onion rings in total is a VERY poor value considering other places we've enjoyed on the island. Do yourselves a favor and even if the sign says "open" drive on by! We...

Delicious burgers, onion rings, and fish and chips! Was surprised to read bad reviews regarding price. For some perspective, food suppliers nationwide have raised their prices and accordingly restaurants need to adjust their prices to stay alive. Most food establishments profit margins are between 10-15% after all the food cost and labor that goes into making a single item. So if you want cheap burgers and fries go to McDonald’s, not here. Here, everything is made fresh and is scrumptious. This is a small business owned by kind folks and with the new prices comes a continued promise of high quality and friendly hospitality. My wife and I ordered a burger and found ourselves ordering another one after our first bite. The onion rings are some of the best I’ve ever had. My 1-2 combo on this island is Duane’s then acai right across the street at Kalalea Juice Hale.

This little gem of a place is worth the stop. My husband and I were camped at Anahola Beach Park (see my other reviews) and we were STARVING. We had been backpacking so this was the closest food for miles without having to bus. Our first time we both had double patty burgers on gluten free buns, fries with homemade teriyaki mayo, and the delicious Merion (spelling?) berry milkshake. Everything was spot on delicious. We loved it so much we stopped a second time as our "last supper" on Kauai. Tom, the owner, is a beauty and very friendly and fun to talk to. Highly recommend sitting at the picnic tables and enjoying a classic burger joint dining experience.
