I never post negative reviews. But the dinner here was so bad, that I feel it was borderline theft and I can’t in good conscience let others make the mistake of dining here, without at least informing them. I began the night by asking for a drink menu. They don’t have one… that seems a little odd, but no worries, I ordered a Manhattan. While there certainly was bourbon in this drink, it was not at all a Manhattan. It was a shot of bourbon with ice and a copious amount of water. No vermouth or bitters could be tasted; just tap water with a hint of booze. I asked the waitress if she indeed put in a drink order for a Manhattan and she verified that she did. Ok then. Next came the oysters Rockefeller. Once the tray was set upon the table, I felt like I was inside of the dumpster behind a fish market on a boiling hot day. Gross. We received oysters that I cannot imagine were even remotely fresh, with a blob of microwaved spinach on top. 🤷🏼. For the entree, and at $38, I received a piece of mahi mahi that was, without a doubt in my mind, a piece of frozen fish from the deep freezer at Sam’s Club, brought to room temp and thrown in the microwave. It was absolutely flavorless, completely dry and tough. Honestly, if I was brought a packet of starkist tuna and a plastic fork, I probably wouldn’t be writing this review. The accompanying vegetable medley appeared to be from a bag, and I did not even attempt a taste. The waitress was nice and the food came out very quickly… perhaps that’s a clue… hint hint, microwaved. I honestly cannot express my disappointment in this “restaurant.” The food quality was so terrible, that I honestly can’t describe this experience as anything other than being...
Read moreI checked this place out with a friend yesterday. It has an eclectic ambiance that could use some updating. The chairs at our table were very mid-century and reminiscent of a 1960s kitchen table. The dining area is paneled with a nice fireplace with views of the river (the frequent trains that buzz by do break the mood and I wish there was some nice quiet jazz playing to off-set that). The faux brick wall in the main dining room and the very weird bluish wallpaper in the adjacent dining area looks dated and cheap. However, the family photos are a nice touch. There's a tiny bar if you don't want to eat in the dining room, but the vibe is a little odd. It's bright and dated.
The food is solid. I had the chicken piccata with mashed potatoes and the stuffed cabbage soup. The portion was decent but not huge. My companion had the petite filet mignon and crab cake with zucchini. The crab cake looked pretty decent and the steak was cooked perfectly. The veggies weren't overdone. We shared oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer. They were tasty but nothing to write home to mother about. The most disappointing part of the meal was the creme brûlée. The texture was all wrong and the sugar wasn't brûléed properly. Also, our server, while attentive and professional, was rather distracted and clumsy. But, in fairness, I don't know how many tables he had.
All that said, I would go back. But, I think that this business needs to make some changes to compete in today's market. Longevity isn't a good business plan and sitting on your past successes isn't the way to bring in new customers. But, I'm a sucker for old family-run businesses like this one and I hope it is around for many...
Read moreWow! A true speakeasy but don’t be fooled, the food is out of this world. When we pulled into the lot we thought for sure we had the wrong place. The only sign is on rte 65. Once you drive to the top of the hill it’s a gravel lot and a large building which may or may not have been a house at one time. We were not sure it was the wrong place.
We entered into a small bar area then down a short hall that lead into the dining room. The environment was nice and cozy. The fireplace was on and we got lucky enough to get the table near by.
We started with soup and salad. I had the tomato bacon dill soup and everyone else had the house salad with their homemade balsamic dressing and blue cheese crumbles. For the main course I had the chicken parm with broccoli on the side. My husband had the ribeye steak with mushrooms and onions and a side of broccoli. Our guests both had the special that evening, Chicken Florentine, one with side of pasta and one with broccoli.
I forgot to take pictures of our desserts but they were so good it more of an experience. We had pineapple upside cake that came with a warm brown sugar sauce. My husband had the crème brûlée.
Everything was amazing it was our first time and will definitely not our last. This will be a regular for us. I wish I could give more stars! I would be remiss to not mention our server, Steve, that was awesome. He explained everything and was there just in time to clear plates and fill waters. His outgoing personality made the...
