Hermosa Coffee House is my favorite place in my home town of Hermosa. The space is cozy, but seems to have room for any size group, from 2 to 8 or 12. Besides the tidy tables, two easy chairs sit in front of an electric fireplace for mochas on those chilly days. You can serve yourself coffee or get coffee or ice cold specialty drinks to order: I prefer a decaf mocha with whipped cream, and the server often makes a freehand design in the whipped cream! Besides this, there's a tasty and economical menu of sweet rolls and sandwiches made on the premises. For your sweet tooth, there's gourmet cotton candy. There's even chalk if your child wants to create sidewalk art on a sunny day! Local art is often on display: I've admired gorgeous bronze sculptures by Jim Green. A bulletin board mentions upcoming local events, and a front corner usually displays historical artifacts from the collection of Hermosa Arts and Historical Association (HAHA). Local artist Lila Pengra has earrings for sale, and there's a display of my books about the area that you can read while you're there. The thing I must tell you about Hermosa Coffee House is that it makes you want to come back again and again because it's rare to feel that welcome anywhere anymore.
When you walk into Starbucks, you might (might) get a "welcome in" but mostly if you go through the drive through. At this coffee shop, it's clearly a calling and a way of life. They really mean it!

Including the employees and owner, you are not merely welcomed by word but by deed.
It makes you want to be there every day to bask in it. Even if you're from New York City and never want to spend a day living anywhere outside it, you might just have a twinge of, "Maybe I could..."
So yes. Come for the coffee. But enjoy the community,...
